i'm only 15, so i don't work, but i'd interested in what some of you older guys have to say about this. Discuss what you think are the pros (positive) and cons (negative) of a job promotion

Pros: More money, possibly more satisfaction.
Cons: More responsibility.

i think responsibility is a pro as well.
pros: more respect (or rather, higher regard) the satisfaction that you must be doing something right, more choice and decisions you can make.
cons: more paperwork to handle, and probably less of the job you wanted to do. when things go wrong, more will be dumped onto you. underlings will love to pick out mistakes. depending on how high you go, the lower people will not like to associate with you, there is a fear of authority and, like, its totally cool to whine about the management, amongst other social politics in the business.

Summed up nicely by the Omnisaurus.

I took a job promotion four years ago and I've never been more unhappy in my job. The money is better but I'm actually stepping down in a couple of months to pursue other things. I will have a considerable cut in my income but at least I'll wake up without that horrible feeling.

Interesting topic for me in particular as I have just turned down a job promotion. Here were my reasons:

1) Money, I think the "more money" reason is a myth. Normally a promotion means more hours at work. If you break the wage down to an hourly rate. I am way better off (financially) in my current position, doing 38 hours a week as opposed to most management positions of 45, 50+ hours a week. (of course this all depends on the actually salary increase)

2) Family time, For me, this is higher up the priority order then money. I have a young family and absolutely want to be part of my children's life (whether they like it or not...hehe)

3). Enjoyment of work. I enjoy what I do, as Mark T states above, I much rather enjoy my day on a modest income, rather then hate my day for a larger income. For me, money is not the answer to happiness. I have been happy to work on large projects requiring up to 70 hours a week. The money was great, but I could only do it for short amounts of time.

Of course ultimately I understand that my long term prospect within the company maybe limited now (pissing management off), but that was a cost I was willing to pay.

As you go higher up the chain, there is more pressure on you, and you become responsible for things you wish you weren't :).

There are two ways to look at salary...and that is one. Beyond the "normal" hours, you get paid nothing. Or.........you get paid a flat hourly hourly rate to live, whether you're working, sleeping, watching TV, or smooching. Sure, that hourly rate isn't great, but it piles up, 24 hours a day :).
