Honestly, people don't make fun of Volkswagen reliability for no reason. If you've never had problems with your GTI, you're in a small minority.

SRT4 and GTO are both simple, reliable, and heller fun.

If you're considering the price of a brand new GTI, have you thought about an E46 M3? You can get a decent example of one of those in that price range. And the driving dynamics will be amazing.
M3s are "easy" to afford. They are extremely expensive to maintain. Best have around a spare $2,500 in the bank in case Inspection I or II come up, as well as money for brakes, tires, & oil.

What about one of these?

They're really not as bad as you think or hear. The only problems I often hear about are ones induced by vigorous abuse. If cared for they're just dandy.

Eh, they aren't bad cars, just not really my style.

He's going to go live on his own in Florida so you suggest 15 year old 10-15mpg pickup trucks?

Took that completely from the reliable standpoint. I've been running mine for the last 18 months, 17mpg, and including price of purchase, all mods and maintenence, I'm at 2100, soon $2300 for the tranny flush. That's not bad at all. Pure maintenence stuff to keep it going is at $1000 or less. Probably 5 months of payments on a new car there.

(price of truck was $200, for the record)

Just suggestions, it's my opinion, I'm entitled to it damnit!

Ask Philly about how much he abuses his to have problems.

I believe his was an 06 and dsg. The newer they got the more kinks got worked out, my 08 was fine. I will say the reliability of the dsg is questionable but I am going for a manual.

The TSI engine has proven to be more reliable than the FSI engine I have in mine. I also don't recall having any issues with the DSG. I'm sure I would if the engine had a lot more power though. I'd have to go through all my service papers to tell you everything that's happened to it. A lot of the trips to the shop have been stuff like changing headlights (I don't want to pull the whole bumper off in a parking lot in winter) and getting it topped off with oil (so VW could see if there was something really wrong with my oil consumption), I usually only have one big thing a year and that's covered by warranty.

What options are on those two cars? I think the GTI starts at $24,500 and the WRX might be $1k more...

They're that expensive?

2011/2012 Mustang V6. Do it. More power, good chassis, better (IMO) looks. Lose a small amount of practicality but erm... So?

Okay budget is down to 20k so its looking like the golf is my number one option, maybe gti if the trade in is good. If I can get a used car, which is doubtful, ill go for a stock evo, b6 s4 or gto but I am not sure how that will fly with the parentals.

Fusion, Mazda6 would like a word with you. Much better seating position than the MkVI Golf (which is far worse than the MkIVs were), same or better on fuel, same or better in the handling department.

CPO Golf Diesel? Pretty sure all of those came with 6 spds.

The deisels are cool, but I really like the I5 Vw motor. My ex had it in her 5speed jetta and it was smooth and nice, plus its more powerful that most engines in its class like the civic or mazda 3:tup:.

2.0T Genesis coupe. 10 Year warrenty, Rwd, sexier styling, available track package. That's or the 2011 V6 mustang are what I would look at if I were buying new in that price range.

Looks like its going to be the mk6 I5 Golf. My budget is $20k and its the best car I can afford and I really like it. Plus it comes with a lot of standard features that most cars you have to pay extra for. The only options I want is a sunroof and all weather floor mats. With all that its stays under 20k. Sure its not going to be as fun as my gti but its perfect for what i need and its a nice driving car with all the little nik-naks I want.

I hear the I5 is rubbish.

But, you will join the GTP I5 club. You'll be the only one sans turbo, though...

What do you mean a TSX isn't your style? TSXs are style.

I may have skipped over it, but do you have any feelings to keep your GTI?

I would but It needs to last a while and its been abused alot unfortunately and the warranty is gone.

It really not a bad motor, granted its not too sporty but its decently powerful at 170hp/177tq and its quite smooth. I know a few people with this motor in their rabbit/jetta/golf and they have never had any problems at all.

I cant afford a new one and they're ugly imo and I need a new car with warranty so the old one is out of the question unfortunately.

Question; how old are you and what will be your living situation a year from now? If you're in your late teens/early 20's and will be living on your own or with room mates in a condo/apartment...forget a new a car or any car around $20k.

Buy a Honda/Toyota something for under $10k and plan a trip to Europe or S.America. Bring a camera, credit cards, condoms and have the wildest summer you can possibly afford. You'll need cash to pay off cops and to liquor up whatever whores you come across, but unlike an entry level car, the memories and pictures from your "summer of sin" will last the rest of your life.

When you're 60 and your bits don't work as well as they used to, will you remember the Golf you bought decades ago b/c a forum told you to -or- will you remember the woman you met in Barcelona that made you walk bow-legged for an hour after your 'date'? My guess...it'll be the latter.

Buying a new car is a losing proposition. Having the time of your life and laughing years later how you made it out alive is worth the price of admission. If you're young, no debt, no wife or accidental children...go for it. You regret the decisions you don't make and if you're a young'un, now's the time. Once you get to the point you have to worry about a career, mortgage, college-debt, or worse...a wife...it's game over. Too late to take those kinds of risks.

Something to think about...

Gotta agree with you on that one. Get a early 90's toyota truck, extended cab and a 4 banger. Good gas mileage, reliable, slow, handy, cheap to insure, reliable, and they can be made to look pretty cool. I know, it doesn't really meet your criteria, but it's what i'm in the market for so I can't help but suggest one.

Well since you own a GTI, you know how VW cars work. I'm there with you, I drive a b6 passat and have done a lot to it. It has been fun and enjoyable. As we both know though these are the biggest mofos to maintain. Id go for the impreza... I'm sick and tired of the rattling in my car but, welcome to owning a VW :). That's why my next car is an e60 M5 :)!

Have you thought about going with a recent MY car? Get something a year old and you'll still have more than enough warranty left, but the biggest chunk of depreciation will have already happened. And if you get a VW in that situation, you'll have many years with it with a 100,000 mile warranty. I'm sure many other makes will work with you to get an excellent warranty on a slightly used car.

I really wish I could but I'm moving 1,200 miles away from home and starting up my life. My parents are buying me a new car to last me a while so I can have a new, reliable car to have to get me to work, school etc. I may not be traveling Europe sexing my way across countries but trust me I love life and enjoy every moment of it. I balance school and partying and its a really good time. Plus even though I cant go on a globe trotting binge of alcohol and women. I am moving to south florida and Miami is only a short hour and a half or so and so is tampa and i'll be living in a resort like appt complex for dirt cheap chock filled with college kids. I wont regret a moment.👍

Also I am really into vw's and have been for a while I chose this on my own. I was trying to push for a gti or wrx but I dont need a "quick" car at the moment. In a few years I'll try for one again.

It needs to be able to get me back and forth between florida and nj 2 or 3 times a year which is 1,200 miles one way. I want a new car lol but once Im settled in down there I was thinking about getting a truck to mess around with in a few years, but I am not ready to give up the small car world yet :).

Oh, I know the rattles... But they only started after I dropped my car on coilovers :sly:. Which I wont be doing with this car and the I5 is much easier to maintain than the oil guzzling 2.0t fsi.

Yes I have but If I were to buy a used car I wouldnt be able to want something fast because there cheaper used, but after knowing how I treated my car I wouldn't trust to buy a used sport car. I mean i'm sure there are sound examples but I cant run the risk now because if it s***'s out on me I wont be able to fix it.

Are you financing it or buying outright?

Does it actually work that way?. I mean it does if you want to sell the car back to the dealer, but if you want to buy a year old car, saving more than 2-3 grand would be hard. My GF and I have been looking at 2009-2010 STIs and WRXs for the past week or so and whether dealer or private, the 2-3k price difference and the 10,000+ miles on the car come out to about the same thing.
