Even though I could easily pay $500 or even a $1000 bucks on a console, I won't. I can't justify spending that kind of money even though I am considered upper class. I bought my US PS2 on the day of it's launch for $300 bucks, which at the time seemed steap but I wanted it. Then the Xbox came out, same price, and I just couldn't justify it...I bought it a few years later for $150.

But I won't buy it unless it's $299.99 or lower. Any higher and I can't justify it at all since it will go down in price with in 6 months.

On the subject of games, buying new ones is pointless. For my Xbox I bought 3 new games out of the 30 I own. For the PS2 I think I've bought maybe 5 new games. Why? Because you can wait a week and buy it used for $40.

Or even wait a month or two and buy it new for $40. Or wait longer and get it as a Greatest Hit for $20. There really is no reason to pay 'full price' for a video game.

Even if the console is a little on the expensive side - it does have a lifespan of 6 years. Imagine a laptop that lasted six years without the need to upgrade it? I know you can do a lot more with a laptop or a PC than you can with a games console but the gap between the two is getting smaller, as we saw with the ps3.

I agree, but honestly if the new PS3 will be availible with one or two awsome launch games, then I just have to import it from Japan right at the beginning... I wouldn't wait a year, hell I won't even wait for a EU/US release ( well, at least if they don't releease it parallely wordlwide, which they always say and never do )

Q: How will the diversification of the PlayStation 3 into more multimedia areas affect the end price?

Hirai: Every time we introduce a product, we don't announce the price, and there's a lot of speculation that goes on. I remember when the PS2 was announced, people said this is going to have to be $699, $799. (The console debuted at $299.)

What we try to do, true to our DNA, and being a part of Sony, is to make sure we pack in a lot of technology and provide that at a very good value proposition to the consumers. We haven't decided on a price yet, but rest assured, we have a very good relationship with consumers. We're not going to suddenly decide to change that philosophy.

I thought $300 for PS2 was too high. $300 for PS3 makes sense though, so it's probably gonna be $350. :D

That would be a lot to me then again... I'm not a spoiled rich kid that can just ask his parents and tada it's there.

Deff to early to be speculating about the price and when it do hit the shelfs im pretty sure i will get it even if it means eating the flowers that still are alive in my apartment the rest of the month.

At least they are fresh! That's gotta be better than fast food. 👍

the price doesnt matter.

all that matters is how close i am to my credit limit when this comes out.

since i pay off my bill every month i should be fine.

That would be nice, but it's probably still too early for speculations though.

Didn't most sources say that PSP was gonna sell for around $300? Then I heard that Japanese market got them for around $180. But when PSP were released in the U.S., they bundled it with bunch of stuff to pad the price up to $250.

If PS3 really were released for $300, I would buy one at the launch. :)

I just read an article from Game Watch, link for it in my sig, and they have the Japan price for the PS3 from Sony. 39,900 yen.

I tried to get a link the article but lost it. I'll look for it later.

It'll most likely cost the same as PS2 did at launch. The game doesn't change significantly each generation, just because the technology gets better. Its natural to see the specs on any new console and get all paranoid about pricing.

wow u guys are lucky when ps2 came out in New Zealand it was $1000 dollars. i paid 500 hundred for it and i would expect the same from ps3

Was that because of the shortage? In the U.S., there were serious shortage during the holiday season and a lot of people did pay over $1,000 on eBay, etc. I almost paid $400 -$500, but that's because I was young and stupid. :D Only people who were lucky enough to snatch up the available units from the retail stores and people who preordered the systems got PS2 for $300.

If PS3 price is too high at the launch, I'm definitely holding it off, this time. :)

Got ya covered man... heres the link

Both the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 launched at 39,800 Yen (294 Euro at today's conversion rates) when they arrived in the Far East, while the Xbox and the Cube both launched at lower prices - 34,800 Yen (257 Euro) and 25,000 Yen (185 Euro) respectively.

I´ve read that this time there will be no price drop though. As the PSP, the PS3 will keep the launch price.

I thought I read that only first million or so PSPs were bundled. I assumed that meant the price lowering to $150 -$180 by the PSP hardware themselves. I could be wrong.

hmmm..... i have no major issues with the price as is, because it's still the cheapest playstation to hit australian shores.

The PS2 cost me $568 USD ($749.00 AUS)

And the PS1 came out at a staggering $758 USD ($1000.00 AUS).

So , as i said previously, at least it's cheaper so far compared to the ohter 2. :)

Just on a side note, $65 aus for a game ($50 us) would be nice compared to the $98.99 aus ($75.00 USD) we pay over here at EB for most new releases.

I recently ordered a game from the UK, and after all charges were applied, it still worked out $25 AUS ($18.90 USD) (10.40 GBP) cheaper than if i walked into my local store and bought it.

Did you see the 213101000110's post? How could the pricing be so high in Australia and New Zealand? It's messed up. I do recall, members from Brazil also mentioning how expensive PS2s are there. I think I'm going to start an PS3 smuggling ring. :) 👍

I payed £400 for my Japanese PS2 and £80 more to chip it! Thats a very expensive purchase but I would be willing to pay it again......or even more for the PS3!

Old post but...

You were ripped off mate, I paid £260 for mine when it first came out.

nevertheless, if the PC technology catches up with the RSX by the time ps3 releases, that rig will still be upwards of 5 grand.

that still makes ps3 a STEAL.

Then you would have to spend a hell of a lot of money on a TV that could handle all that technology, otherwise it wouldn't be worth it.

A plasma TV would be ideal, but the cheapest plasma TV here in britain is about £2500. Add the cost of a PS3 (say £270) and that's £2770.

Not much of a saving at all really.

Plasma TV's are trash man...seriously of all the TV's out, that would be the last I would even consider buying...

For a good PS3 experience, if you're really into "high def" look to spend around $3000 to $3500.
