Hi, im looking for another ps2 game for in-between gt4 and could do with some reccomendations.

Would like a good shoot-em up type game, or something sci-fi perhaps...

Played Grand theft auto series and after a while they bore me a bit.

Enjoyed the first Metal gear solid, is the latest any good?

Any reccomendations welcomed as been playing gt4 for far too long and havent a clue what else it out there!

cheers

Dave

Black
You should at least rent this one for sure. Very good FPS. If you can at least get through level 5 you will be very happy. All bullet holes stay, excellent explosions, complete level destruction, good graphics.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy
Excellent hack and slash style game. More fun if you have friends to join you.
Toca Race driver 3 and Enthusia as mentioned below for race car games.
Timesplitters 2 and Timesplitters 3 shooters
Burnout 2 and Burnout 3 arcade race car games

I have few PS2 games other than GT3 & 4 and other racing games, but the ones i have i would strongly recommend.

Other good racing games, if you don't aleady have them are, Enthusia & Toca3.

If you want a shooting game try Black

Tomb Raider Legends is good and along the lines of MGS

Shadow of the Colosuss is certainly different, but if you can get into it it's very good.

I've heard good things of Resident Evil 4, but have only played it on the Game Cube - for which it is great.

It depends on the type of shooter you are looking for.

If you want fast-paced, rack up the kills kind of fun then I like the Timesplitters games. I own Timesplitters 2 and I love just setting it up with a bunch of bots and going to town. Besides, how can you hate a game that has a over 100 characters, one called Badass Cyborg? Some of teh levels allow you to be sneaky and take your time but any multiplayer games require you to be very fast. This game would also fall under the sci-fi realm as there is Quantum Leap style time travel, aliens, robots, zombies, cyborgs, etc.

I also like using a light gun and so far my favorite in this area is the Time Crisis games. I own Time Crisis 2 and it is packed with mini games like Quick Draw and and a clay pigeon game, both which I have seen in arcades. Time Crisis also allows you to duck so you get to be somewhat more interactive with the game.

If you want a good storyline based FPS where it is more thinking and less reflexes then there are a ton of them. I haven't tried Black, but I still pop in Medal of Honor every now and then.

Oh I agree with Foolkiller. Timsplitters 2 and 3 are very fun games with tons of replay value. I will also add that one to the list above.

Thanks for the replies so far, already got Enthusia and to be honest i dont rate it as good "all round" as gt4 and as such have hardly used it. (Good job it only cost a fiver!)

Think I will give "Black" a try as it has cropped up a few times, will perhaps rent some out to try before i buy.

Thanks again for the suggestions, have written them down and will look into them.

regards

Dave

I almost forgot Kaido Battle 2 or Kaido Battle 3. Those are very fun racing games. Lots of drifting downhill on mountains. However you need to have a "swap disk" to play it. The swap disk is only $20.00 and will allow you to play any imported game.
Burnout 2 and Burnout 3 are also fun arcade racing games. I will add these to the other post also.

Tourist Trophy !....

I did rent this out - really good in my opinion and will surely get this when i see it at the right price.

Im looking for something different to racing sims/games at the moment though, and some good ideas cropping up!

thanks

Dave

Red Faction
Half Life (assuming you don't already own it on the PC)

Ferrari F355 Challenge
Gran Turismo 3

MGS3 (especially Subsistence) is perhaps the best game in the series, so yeah.

Auto Modellista is'nt bad...sure the online play is dead.. and the story goes by fast, it is definetely worth buying fo $5 used at EB games, as well it includes Wangan Tokyo Style Hi-Way courses, and two touge courses ( Akagi, and Rokko)

Out of category but u should try Urban Reign. Its a beat em up game and its pretty fun. The story might be a bit boring and the difficulty might be extreme but the gameplay makes up for it. Oh yeah also try Resident evil 4, a bit different than any other shooting games but yeah one of the best.

Dave

So you are straying from the fold of pure GT4 gaming, well it happens to us all. LOL

I would certainly add my recomendation to Black and Timesplitters, both are excellent fun, with Black in particular one I drag out on a regular basis.

I know you are not looking for racing games but TRD3 is worth a try and for an arcade racer the Burnout series is supurb, eye-bleedingly fast.

I would also add Mercenaries (which you should be able to pick up cheap), its like GTA but set in a war-zone, very big and quite mad.

I also have a personal soft spot for the Worms series, they are cheap to pick up and very, very silly. Have spent many a drunk night with 'Worms Forts', it also has the advantage of being an easy game to learn and one that appeals to non-gamers as well.

My last one depends on how self-concious you are, its my wife's favorite and thats the Singstar series. Now I can't hold a tune to save my life, but I have to admit that it is very, very adictive and certainly a change from the racing norm.

Let me know what you go for and what you think.

I reciently bought quite alot of ps2 games..... and I do have to say that fifa world cup 2006 and GTA LCS are really enjoyable..... ok, the graphics aint amazing but its another story to play through, cant wait for Vice City Stories!.... Outrun is ok but its a small game (better suited to psp) and I got bored of it really quickly.....Star Wars Battlefront 2 is quite good.....

Try the Burnout series of games.
Lots of driving like the Gran Turismos. However, in the later games you get "demolition derby" type of races, as well as "wreck with the most/least monetary damage.

For "shoot 'em ups" I think you might enjoy Ace Combat 04 and 5
AC4 has less of a true plot. But, I've found lots of replay value in trying to get the highest ranks in all the missions, and replaying the game thru.
AC4 is much more challenging, but has more replay value, because even though you know what the missions entail, they really don't get all that much easier if you stick with the conventional planes.

Resident Evil 4. Not yet $20, I think, so give it a while. It's worth the cost, anyway.

Lego Star Wars, which is $20. Awesome game, and it's simple and a challenge depending how you play it.

Killzone, which is $20.

Circuit City had some bargain bin games at $4. It were games like Syphon Filter: Omega Strain and Splinter Cell 2 and 3, but come on, for $4 you cannot go wrong if you don't have them.

Other games I wanted to mention already have been above.

Got that for my kids at Asda Wallmart for £5 and its a great little game, very well put together and a must for any Star Wars fan.

I bought it for my two boys and they never got a chance to play it the first week we had it. :D

I love the Ace Combat games. I recommend them to anyone who wants a good dogfighting game. Plus, flying a high speed jet through tunnels to blow up a superweapon can really keep you tense.

Wow, I thought I was the only worms fan out there. You can never go wrong with a game that uses weapons like exploding sheep/old ladies/mad cows, Holy Hand Grenades (complete with heavenly choir), and a giant donkey statue. 👍 It also allows you to select what kind of accent your worms get to talk in. I think usually go with Scottish. And be careful not to accidentally tap your fire button, launching a bazooka at your feet can have some pretty bad results.

I also should recommend the XMen: Legends games. They are a fun action platformer with RPG elements, kind of like the way Kingdom Hearts plays. That is also another game I enjoy but I like XMen Legends better just because Wolverine is much cooler than Mickey.

I don't have any native PS2 Worms games but i still occasionaly stick the original PS1 version of Worms in my PS2 - it's an absolute classic. 👍

We had some friends to stay a few months back, their son had the StarWars lego game that we played for a bit. It was good but got a bit repetative after a while - great for kids though!

Definatly not the only one, such a wonderful series and now going well in 3D (the first was a little tricky to get used to) and the range of weapons in Forts is quite simply silly.

I can certainly relate to the bazooka and forgetting to hold the fire button down, I've lost count of the number of times thats happend to me. LOL

My kids love the way the worms 'die' as well.

Does Forts have online play? I really think that would add a lot to the game, especially with a headset.

"Oh dear!" *POOF* tink tink

I have the PS2 version and that does not have on-line.

Doesn't make a difference for me as my PS2 is not on-line, still worth a look as it adds a great new twist to the series.

...

Killzone, which is $20.

...
Yeah, if you've never played Killzone you need to try it. Probably my all time favourite shooter game. The 2 player games are awesome. Me and my bro play it at least a few times a week (this has been going on for many, many months now) 👍

Straying a touch Scaff I think!

Its come about from getting a promotion at work which is great, Im just about to start year 2 of my Btec in Elec engineering and with the promotion comes more courses, NVQ's and week long "Intensive" training to get me upto speed.....Hence Im looking for some games that are good for a quick balst when i get the time...which wont be that often.

In year 1 of my course GT4 was too much of a distraction and i have started to let it take a back seat now, it can take over your life for heavens sake!!

Thanks to all the reccomendations so far, going to see what i can get cheap now as im too tight to pay full price for any PS2 game (other than gt4 of course...doh)

It's good....................

....................but Black is better (IMHO).

But might not suit your new needs Dave as most of the levels take a good hour to play through and have no mid-level save points, so Killzone or Timesplitters may be a better bet.

Yeah, with time constraints Timesplitters is definitely a good choice as you can set up a deathmatch with seven bots, or a couple friends and multiple bots, or whatever and 25 frags can be achieved within about 5 minutes.

The story mode levels are relatively short too and if I recall (I haven't played in a while, I'm trying to get all golds in GT4) there are mid-level saves. But the game is really about the multiplayer levels. That is the best part.
