there's a piece of metal stuck over the port, and i dont know how to get it off

i can't believe this thing has been staring me (and my father) in the face the last month or so, lol
 
nope. mother just did it with her fingers :mad:

it just swung open like a mini door. i checked it was ethernet with the straight-through that comes with the network adaptor - it fitted. all i need now is a crossover, and tiscali to say it'll work
 
Eh, tiscali won't even know it's happening. You'll need to get your cross over cable and find the "Internet Connection Sharing" stuff in Win 98. I've never actually done that before so I can be of little help.
 
ICS?

Isn't Tiscali your internet provider? If they even monitor your usage (which I'm pretty sure they don't care) all it will look like is your PC is doing a little extra talking on the Internet.

will this stop me from playing?
or just cause a 'bit' of lag.
 
I'm pretty sure it will. I know lots of people that use it all the time. I just personally have never used it. In fact, my girlfriend uses it at her house so she and her dad can have two computers on their internet connection.
 
Does windows 98 even have ICS? I thought me and 2k were the first to have it. Or maybe windows 98 second edition.

As for the lag I have no idea, I don't know anyone who games online.
 
150kbit should be "ok". It won't be anything wonderful, but it'll get the job done.

I believe SE had some form of connection sharing. Though as I stated above I've never set it up.
 
Um.... actually, it still doesnt work - i plugged everything in, and it goes kaput at the first stage - it can't log on to the network - why?

sorry to post this so late, but yes, it's set up like that...
Does Norton AntiVirus have a Firewall with it? Just wondering, as that could be the reason....
 
I believe the firewall is a seperate appliication in the Symantec suite.

Have you configured the "Internet Connection Sharing" program? I say that as if I expect it to be there, but I honestly don't even know if it is. I *think* it is, but I'm not possitive.
