Hey

My Ps2's (Original and Slim) are both unable to read a few of my games. Two of which have no scratches at all.

Original: This one i've had since they first came out. It's been my most used console. It's never failed on me once.

Slim: I've had this one since the release date. It's been used a lot, and has been left on for excessive hours. It's been dropped twice. :ouch:

When I put the game in I get the error 'Please insert a Playstation or Playstation 2 format disk. I have played the game before, and have save files of it on my memory card. The game is called: Fantasy Star Universe.

When I put another game in, it gets to the Playstation 2 screen, then turns black, and doesn't do anything else. The game: Jak 2 renegade.

Need for Speed; Most Wanted, and Underground 2.

These games both load, but during gameplay the game stops, and has to load the area im driving too. It sometimes struggles to load the music for the game, or it struggles to load the cars.

The other games all have scratches, and I understand why they wouldn't work well, even though most of my other games work.

Thanks, and all help is appreciated. :)

Its sounds like a DRE - Disc Read Error. There are 17 million threads on it in the GT4 forum, but nothing for a few years now. Is your slimline new enough to still be under warranty?

I am aware of the Disk read error. And have read multiple of them to try and find a solution.

Nope, neither of them are still under warranty.

The DRE is only one error. I'm getting multiple ones from 2 consoles.

For PSU, you'll probably have to clean the laser. I'm not sure, but I think PSU is a DVD-9 game. That means PS2s will sputter around trying to play it even when they are working right.

As for your other games, could you be more specific? As in, what game causes what error on what system?

The games are Need for Speed MW, and Need for Speed Underground 2. They both encounter the same errors, with loading issues, like, the in game music causing the game to freeze, the game data doesn't even load when it comes to loading races. Half the game area doesn't show up on the map or when you drive into it, and sometimes it's not even recognized by the system, and it just stays at the browser screen.

if I remember right, at least one of those was a Blueback? that'll often give a PS2 a conniption fit. if you hear "tiktiktik" (very loud) from the console, the laser's worm gears stuck, again. whatever factory puts together the laser eyes for sony doesn't grease the gears up enough. usually, pressing down on the lens while cleaning will reseat that raise and lower worm or gear. since some of the later run PSX's (not PS1's, psX, the big grey case here in the US) did it as well, it's a chronic problem.

a suggestion from one of the cheat code makers is to make sure the PS2's diagnosis mode is on. sometimes it needs that for those older blueback disks.

Yeah, I was fiddling around with that. Probably a stupid question but what does changing the setting from normal to smooth do?

Cleaning/fixing the laser is really the only thing im worried about.

Smoothing is an option that only influences PS1 games.
Combined with what it is doing with PSU, it sounds like a problem with the laser. Does it make the ticking noise mentioned by Sniffs?

true...smoothing is only for PS1's, with exceptions. one game explicitly states to leave it off because of the game's special effects.

no, there's a separate "diagnostic mode" switch. it needs to be on for bluebacks.

Nope, no ticking noise. It pretty much just starts up, and goes to the 'please insert Play Station 1 or Play Station 2 format disk.'

No ticking noise and RSOD means dying laser most of the time. Try diagnostic mode. If that doesn't work, rip 'em open and clean the lenses. If that doesn't work, they need new lasers, which means you might as well just buy another PS2.

Thanks for all the help. Much appreciated. :) Just one last thing... How do I clean my lends? Mainly for the Slim. Should I just get an old top/rag and put some turps on it and clean it?

Toronado: I get RSOD's with bluebacks even on the slim I bought new. dying lazer my butt. learn to do maintenence on your machine instead of Pitching em!

Bend:" if you mean turpentine? heck no. you wouldn't have a PS LEFT! it'd probably dissolve the thing into a puddle of toxic waste. rubbing alcohol on a Q-Tip, or the oz equivalent

Didn't I suggest Diagnostic mode and cleaning the lens as the first two steps in the process? Sounds like maintenance to me.

And absolutely none of the games mentioned in this thread are CD-ROM PS2 games regardless. He is having trouble with bog-standard DVD-based PS2 games. And since the system isn't making the dreaded clicking noise when it is reading them, it pretty much holds a flashing neon arrow towards it being a problem with the laser.

nah, I mean the drive gears themselves. specially on the older, bigger lensed units. they seem to always conk out for lack of grease (or too much, in the case of my one PSX) when I got the tiktiktik, i push down on the laser lens unit itself when I wipe it. stuff still runs on gears and mechanical parts in this day and age, not on wishes :P
