PS2 won't play GT3 or DVD's anymore

not sure if this the right forum for this, but i didn't see one for PS2 problems/troubleshooting.

anybody know what it is that goes bad in the PS2 that causes it not to read DVD's and some games? this is the 2nd P2 i've had(thank god for Best Buy's 2-year free replacement!) that's done this. it has been moved around the house some but never dropped. some one told me the position has something to do w/ it, that they should be vertical instead of horizontal. GT3 is my favorite game, and now it won't play!:banghead: please help if you can, i don't want have to be replacing it every 6 months. thanks
 
oh yeah, it seems to play most other games fine. just GT3 and DVD's seem to have a problem. one more question, what's the best way to clean a PS2?
 
I don't have answers to your questions, but my PS2 recently started getting picky about what dvd's it will play. This is also my second PS2, it's never been dropped or mishandled and is about a year and a half old.
 
Happily I can help you - this is the exact same problem the £39 PS2 I bought off eBay had (it read blue discs, but not DVDs/DVD-based games).

It's slightly complex to describe though (but relatively easy to carry out - 20 minutes, tops). Chuck an e-mail my way and I'll try to send you a step-by-step guide to it.
 
That guide covers the classic DRE - where the console stops reading blue discs first. But it doesn't cover the "repair" I made on a machine which ONLY reads blue discs/CDs but not DVDs. I used one screwdriver and a permanent marker... And it doesn't have any helpful pictures either so you know what you're doing...

Yep - that covers it nicely. Didn't know there was a webpage with it on.

SPD_RCR - it's unlikely to be the lens from the description of the problem, but you can always clean the lens while the machine is opened.
 
thanks for the replys guys, i'll check out those links. my PS2 actually started playing GT3 again(haven't tried any DVD's yet), just set it in the vertical position and it started playing. i'll check out that web site anyway, just in case it does go on the fritz again.
 
my ps2 always ****s up from time to time with DVD's.

before you do anything......go buy a lens cleaning CD and use it.

works for me.
 
Please send me yor guide to help my ps2 read dvds again and play some of my favorite old games with purple bottoms. Thank You.

mine did the same thing but i called the Sony Company and they took it and replaced the new lens and every thing on it that needed replacing because they were outdated and they did all for free and i preety sure my warenty had expiered too but after it worked fine... thats the only advice i can give hope it helps a little bit..
