PS3 AVI Playback

I have a question, why does my ps3 not want to play any of my avi files on my external hdd. Procedure: I connect my 750gb HDD to my PS3, go to video tab>options>browse all than I select the file and it says format not supported? Which formats are supported? Is there any software I can install to play my avi files?

Search around google any. i searched and found out that you can make a streaming media server from a pc and with your ps3's internet connection, stream on-the-fly.

Uh... no. The bulk of video content you might look at maybe in AVI, much of it may also have been converted to AVI, but video content comes in all sorts of different forms and get converted all the time.

Besides, what is so lame about converting? It's exceptionally easy to do, and in some cases allows you to compress more content int he same amount of space without effecting the quality... that's a good thing. 👍

I have no problems with converting when it comes to quality or size issues but when a product limits you to a certain way or a certain kind of file it ticks me off. Our computers can play whatever, my Archos 704 can play almost whatever via drag and drop. Wtf does everything else have to be limited?? They very easily could allow for other formats. Why do they not? because of pirating probably which is lame because there are ways around it. Even then what about the average user that doesn't know what to do. Yeah... I stand by what I said above.

They really need Dvix. I dont see why Sony is being stubborn, they've had 2 years to get a license or whatever they need to support it.

Most pirates use the Divx codec, and AVI format.

Supporting that codec openly supports piracy. Not supporting it makes it a 'hassle' for pirates to continue to use it, as the work around is rather 'long'.

Plain and simple.

I suppose lots of it in pirated material however alot of legit stuff from websites comes in that format aswell...

Oh well.....

The only codec I want is Quick Time. If ur having a problem playing your files either convert them or stream them.

Well i use a mac and use EyeConnect and it works great, but for those who use PC use MP11 i think, this will then stream it straight to your PS3 via your wirless network.

I would like to be able to play video files directly from my digital camera on my ps3.
If all you are doing is a direct feed, and not wanting to store it, why would you plug it into the PS3 to play them? I just connect my camera directly to the TV in those situations.

That requires another device that i don't travel with. But I take my PS3 to a friends house often, some times i just want to insert my SD card and play the videos. I like to show of my sons videos and me on my bike when I'm not home.

If you can link me to a codec that has better compression quality I'd like to hear it.

I like high HD Dvix videos. Even Sony's mp4 encoded videos are broadcast quality and are smoother and better than wmv but I dont know any devices that record and out put to mp4. MP4 is the only format I've seen that can give the illusion of 60fps. A few PSN videos are just as smooth as TV.
