[PS3] blind HDMI config for system 3.40 ^

Okay, I have a 20" Acer X203H monitor which I have been using to play PS3 games. It only supports 480i and 720p. Recently, I updated the PS3 software to 3.40.

But this is a tough part. Every time I plug in my HDMI, there is a screen that says an HDMI connection is detected and wants to apply settings automatically. For this screen, I can't get around it! Once I apply the settings, my monitor gives me a message saying "Input not supported." There were earlier system versions where if I plug in HDMI, it would allow me to customize resolutions right then and there, but after a couple of system updates, it's that one screen that I can't get around and it's ridiculous.

Something tells me that now the system keeps "assuming" 1080p or other kind of HDMI output that my monitor can not display due to limited compatibility. Luckily, I studied the system using a different TV and took notes as to what buttons must be pushed in order to do a blind HDMI configuration method - where the player is actually able to select resolutions that the monitor can support instead of the system "assuming" all the time. Then here's what I wrote down:

01) Make sure HDMI is disconnected.

02) Make sure you are automatically logged in to the system. (wait up to a minute after you turn it own - if you haven't pushed PS on your controller yet, do so now!)

03) Hold Left for 3 sec.

04) Push Right once.

05) Hold Down for 5 sec.

06) Push Up 4 times.

07) Push X.

08) Hold Up for 3 sec.

09) Push X.

10) Hold Up again for 3 sec.

11) Push Right once.

12) Now you can connect HDMI.

13) Push X.



If you don't see any screen that lets you choose HDMI settings between Automatic and Custom, reboot the entire system and try the sequence again. It might take more than one try to get it right, but I have done this blind config before and to me it works.

Otherwise, select "Custom" once the screen comes up, and then the next screen is where you can select resolutions your monitor can support and apply it without any problems. I TAKE NO LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES TO PS3's CAUSED BY INCORRECT SETTINGS DUE TO THIS TRICK.

Why not just hold the power button for 5 seconds (needs to be on standby before though), wait for the beep, and your display settings are reset.
It detects which cables are being used and lets you re-adjust your settings. I did this once. My TV only supports 1080i, and once I set it to 1080p (this is how I found out it's 1080i). The screen went blank and I couldn't get a picture at all. So I did a quick Google search and a forum had been explaining that all you need to do is hold down the power button for 5 seconds from standby.

There is a breakthrough now. The moment that it auto-detects an HDMI connection and it displays its screen again, just select Yes.

After this screen, some monitors could go blind and pop a screen that indicates that it cannot support a certain resolution (going back to the assumption of 1080i/1080p).

IF THIS HAPPENS: Just hit Left and then X! It should revert back to 480p and you should be able to see your PS3 from there. Then and only then, you can re-configure your PS3 to resolutions that your monitor can support.

If no result, go into standby. Then hold your PS3 power button until you hear its second beep (not counting the first beep when you first turn the system on). Repeat this step and only use my list above as a final resort.
