I have one of the older PS3's with a 40GB hard drive, works fine BUT it wont let me install a 3GB game as it says there's not enough room.

The trouble is there should be loads of room as all I have on my PS3 is 4 trailers for games I'd like to buy, 5 old PS1 games I bought in the store and about 3 GT5 saved replays.
I never use any of that crap they install on your PS3 (LoveFilm, Photo thing, music thing etc etc) so what's wrong?

Any ideas please?

Any game you install takes up room too (GTA4 is 6Gb, for instance). Have a look under Game/Game Data Utility to see all your installed games and how much space they take up.

Go to

Settings,
System Settings,
System Information

Profit! :)

If it says not enough space he is probably right. May be you should consider getting a slim 320gb sooner or later anyways. 40gigs is too low :p

I have a Launch 60GB and it's rough to scrap space for downloaded games. The Welcome Back program caused me to do some Spring Cleaning in the gamedata section. Famine is right, you might be surprised at how much space a disc-based game will take up in that opening install.

The best solution without getting rid of data is to upgrade the HDD. There is a guide here on GTP you can search for. I explained everything to do in that thread if you are considering that route.

That's what I did. I upgraded my 40gig to a 350gig hard drive for 60 bucks, and never looked back. Best way to go if you don't want to change systems.
There are loads of how to articles out there to help you out.

I would have to add that it also does not void any warranties but his console is so old that it does not have a warranty.

Thanks for the answers guys, much appreciated.

I did the Game Data Utility thing (thanks 'Famine') and found a couple old games to delete and grabbed a few GB back; now my System Info says I have 14GB/37GB free. Pretty wierd for a PS3 that only has 4 trailers and 5 PS1 games on it (plus installed Tomb Raider, GT5).
PS should give us the option to uninstall the crap they force on to our machines (LoveFilm and all the rest of it).

@Nick09 Upgrading the HDD sounds scary (your post: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=110522), as you no doubt guessed I'm not a gadget guy and I see there are problems (https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=160432)

By the way can someone please tell me how to play online; I can't see anywhere in the game which lets me play against you guys online..unless it's only online with BSpec, yuck!

Of course when you install a new hard drive into your PS3 you will have to reactivate the system. So after you are done backing up, just go deactivate your system(every PS3 is linked to your PSN account and you can only share your account with up to 5 PS3's), and then reactivate when you restore your backup. Games like GT5 are critical about not sharing save files so this is the reason why you have to do it.

I have also noticed that my instructions were a little sloppy and I've retyped it for easier use. Changing the hard drive is pretty easy. It just seems hard since it involves moving your data to the new hard drive.

You underestimate the space taken by those 5 PS1 games. I'm pretty sure that GT5 alone is +11GB.
