Hi

My PS3 controller doesn't work wirelessly anymore, is there a way to change the batteries or do I just bin & buy a new one?

It's nearly two years old.

Thanks
Paul

There should be a wire that can connect your DS3 to one of the PS3's USB ports. Though it doesn't come with the controller when purchased, you shall be able to find one in your house easily. Just connect it to the DS3 and the USB controller, and it shall be recharging in no time. ;)

Oh, and don't twist the wire in a very tight circle. :P

The batteries I don't believe are user replaceable. You may be able to send the controller to Sony to replace the battery but I imagine that will be at a cost to you.

You can use the controller as a wired unit by using it with the usb charging cable plugged in all the time.

Aside from that, you'll have to buy a new one.

Yes you can change that :)

EDIT:
Maybe try next time google since this isn't very mutch GT related

i am certain when the PS3 was launched we were told by sony that the battery would never need replacing..or words to that effect

You can just recharge your DS3 controller with a USB connecting wire through plugging it in one of the ports for the cable when the connective indicator on the tip of your controller starts to blink, which is a sign for consumption of the battery and need of recharging for further use, but as GT HP Nut said, the cable doesn't come along the controller when you purchased one, so you have to find it on your own at home or go to get the wire separately.

He's had it for two years! Does anyone really think that he's never charged it (or know how to charge it ) in all that time?

I still use one of my SIXAXIS I got at launch in March 2007 and it works like a charm (except for the worn out sticks).

That's what they (Sony) meant; the controllers themselves would need replacing due to wear and tear long before the batteries do!

As for replacing them, it's easy, all you have to do is remove the screws and take the back off. Depending on the revision of your controller you may have small H-shaped pieces of plastic which are separate to the rest of the controller, or there may be an extra clip that you have to apply pressure to to get the back off, just be patient and gentle and it'll come off. Then just unplug the dead battery and plug the new one in. Be careful to not lose anything that may fall out of the controller when doing this, old ones used to use a metal pin in the triggers which fell out very easily but newer ones have a plastic pin moulded to the trigger itself. Also older controllers had separate boards for the accelerometer but if I remember correctly that won't be a problem if you're just taking the back off, I think they were mounted to the front half.

I have a SixAxis that came with my launch 60gb PS3 that works perfectly to this day, as well as a DualShock 3 that I bought on the day they launched and it works perfectly as well. So I agree that the controller will wear out before the battery does, and even if the battery dies you can still plug it up via USB so it isn't a huge deal. Of course I have a 20 or so foot mini USB cable so having to charge the controller while I game doesn't bother me.

Plug it in to the USB port and charge it? What the heck?!?!? I've been tearing my controllers apart about every three days and replacing the batteries like the video above! Spent about 26,700,000 yen this year. I get a box of bbatteries (32) for about 3,000,000 yen off eBay.

Two of them are taped together because they've been taken apart so many times.

Hi

Thanks for the replies, sounds like I might be able to track down a new battery.

Yes it works fine when plugged in & it used to charge up fine.
