Interesting.
But this video doesn't show the HDD was used in another PS3. And his PS3 is running custom firmware.

@Dr Fourtrack
You can try something like this to rescue your saves:

I didn't have a Yellow Light Of Death. Mine has a red light until I press the on button (it won't turn on using the handset) then it goes green but won't show anything on screen or make any sound. The handset lights just keep flashing if I try to connect it.

In my case, after a couple of minutes, my PS3 shuts off :(

I'm not sure but I think Playstation Plus saves all game data (if you say yes to it saving it on cloud). But almost nobody on ps3 gets psplus. In my opinion, its really helpful

Yes, I just did that last night. My HDMI port croaked so I needed to back up my data before they sent the unit somewhere to repair. I joined the PSPlus for both of my entities and uploaded all my data for when my unit comes back. They told me it was a 50-50 chance the HD would be formatted?!?! It seemed pretty seamless to backup to PSPlus but more difficult to backup to a memory stick, which I also did, just for insurance. When I clicked on "copy" in the menu, the memory stick would not be included in the choices for backup???
Somehow, I blundered through.

That reminds me, it's a good idea to support your HDMI cord where it exits from the port on the back of the console. Mine would sometimes droop down to the floor from waist height which put pressure on the port from the weight of the cord. Eventually the Port socket loosened up and then the center contact wafer delaminated with tiny strips of contact material jammed into the bottom of the socket from inserting the HDMI cord too many times.

I purchased a new, high end HDMI cord today for when my unit returns for a fresh start and my new cord will be supported.

I think i needed a working machine, first, too do the back-up. Perhaps now, I will do it in case it happens again.
I'm really not looking forward to the effort one or two of the in game challenges are gonna give me again, some of them I was on for a month. Hopefully I can recover the information from the old hard-drive, tho' it's looking a bit in the balance from all of the comments from the lovely people on :gtplanet:.

@Dr Fourtrack - Yes you can, & here's how.

I'm not sure if that's permanent, or if you have to go through the set up every single time. If it's not permanent, then do it once & back up your data to an external hard drive.

Or, if you just want to retrieve game data, you can just buy an external USB hard drive caddy off ebay for under a tenner, then slip in your drive & connect it to a PC or laptop.

👍

Followed this vid but my new PS3 could not use the drive.

Might have a go at this ↑

Upset at the amount of effort and time it's gonna take me to get back to where I was in the game :(

Plus, now I can't seem to get it connected to my WiFi :banghead:

Other than that it's great to be playing again :cheers:
