Earlier tonight I sat down for some much needed gaming after a long week... As i was playing GTA IV, my ps3 (2 yr old 60 gb) suddenly beeped a few times, and then shut itself off. I tried to restart it, but when I pressed the power button, it began to start up like normal, but then the green light turned amber/yellow, beeped, and then shut itself off, the yellow light now blinking red... I tried to restart a few more times, but it did not work...
Is my ps3 really dead? What should I do???
PLZ HELP!

You got the YLOD!

I suggest you wait for three days... come Sunday, it should be back to life...

:D i kid, i kid...

^ Harsh :sly:

It is more than likely knackered though. If it's still got a disk in it you should be able to get it to eject by doing the fan test (google it) and hopefully you've backed up your game saves recently. You can try phoning Sony to see what they can do about fixing it but they'll probably just offer you a reconditioned PS3 for about half the cost of a new PS3.

Sorry dude

No I rather you try to get a can of air before you do ask Sony. I have read online that's it's a issue with heat. You can watch this video for instructions:

After you have gotten the PS3 opened up you can take the can of air and blast the dust out. Try to get all of the small spaces because I have seen dust get caught in some mighty tiny places.

I also own a 60GB PS3(now has a 320GB HDD) and so far I have not experienced any YOLD yet.

Yup YLOD

You pretty much have 3 choices open:
1. Get a reconditioned Ps3 (I presume it s out of warrenty)
2. Fix it (there are plenty of videos on utub and spare parts are no problem neither), that what i would recommend you, cause the fatty is the best (backward compa.). I did it on a friends PS3 without any knowledge (on the ps3) except the vids, and now it s working again (4 months). And if it doesn t work, head to point 3, and there are also online repair services (sent it in wait 2-4 weeks and 150 bucks).
3. Get a slim

Here an other poor ps3 owner from this week:

thanks for the help everybody... i tried turning it on again this morning and no luck...
i think i'm either going to call playstation or just break down and get a slim...

if i do get a slim, how do i transfer all of the stuff ive downloaded to the new model tho?

Happened to me a few days ago. It is sad to think I bought this PS3 a few years ago just so I can play GT5 and its already broken even before the game release. :grumpy:

If you have a vacuum cleaner use it to clean the vents. I'm willing to bet on the fact that it's has some dust bunnies after running for two years. I have also fixed the youtube link in my last post so consider that too.

thanks, nick, but things turned out good! My PS3 had been experiencing some odd problems recently, so i just decided to call them cause i didnt want to void any kind of waranty with them...

When i called them, they said they would just swap my old 60gb for a NEW 120GB SLIM :dopey::D:p:drool:

unfortunately, they have to wipe the hard drive clean, but i think most of my save game data is backed up via playstation network... anyways, i gettin me a new PS3 slim for free

Ah that is good news but remember you can always re-download anything you downloaded from the playstation store. Also you should think about investing into a external HDD to back up the data on the new slim PS3 because you will never know what will happen in the future. When you do backup the data just follow these instructions here. Just follow the steps about making a backup.

You're a very lucky man, my original PS3 died last August and at that point they were only offering reconditioned PS3's for £125 so I just bought a slim. Make sure you get a new 12 month warranty with your new one and ask them if they do the continuous play extended warranty.

Unfortunately your PS3 game saves are stored on the PS3 hard drive so you will almost certainly lose these but trophies are linked to your PSN ID so you don't lose them. You could always download PS3 gave saves for the games you don't want to play through again from the internet, just have to search through google.

If you go to the account section on your new PS3 and then transaction history you can see everything you've every downloaded from PSN and download it again without having to pay again.

Definitely worth in vesting in an external hard drive to do a back up. I just copy my saves onto a USB stick and then save them on my PC.

BTW Slim's are much quieter and run cooler but do make sure you keep your new one in a well ventilated space as per the instructions and vacuum the vents occasionally. :)

Great idea. i think when the new ps3 shows up, i will invest in an external hard drive to back up everything...

I've never heard of that... how do you do that? i will most certainty pursue that course of action cause i have beaten or am almost done with at least 10 games by now... i dont want to spend another 2 years replaying all those games! :banghead:

Take note of this outline here. To import savedata files it has to be the way as the webpage. So according to the website you must make a "PS3" folder on your usb drive. Then make another called "SAVEDATA" in the PS3 folder. The name and capitals must be exact as I have said for you to import a PS3 save file.

To get a file just use google.

cool! thanks!
do you use a pc for this? my main computer is a mac, so im wondering if the memory card format will be unreadable...

The USB stick or HDD has to formatted as FAT32 (or maybe just FAT). When I was doing a backup with my 250GB external HDD I had to create a partition because windows will only format FAT32 up to 32GB(ish), I seem to remember from reading up on it that Mac's will format FAT to any size so you should be OK.

An easy way to create the correct folder names that Nick described is to copy a game save/photo/video etc onto the external HDD from the PS3 as the PS3 creates the folders itself.

I've just googled "PS3 game saves" and this is the first page (http://www.ps3savegame.com/Game_Saves.aspx) looks like quite a good resource. The website explains what to do but basically you just copy the folder you download into the PS3 game saves folder on the external HDD and you will be able copy them onto the PS3 through games saves section of the XMB

It can all be a bit time consuming but not as much as playing everything through again!

if you still have your broken ps3, take down the hdd (no void warrenty), connect it with the pc (sata) and copy everything down. You will have everything from your old ps3 on your new slim one.
And everything working 'cause you gonna have the same account. Also don't copy every demo and updates as they are faster downloaded via psn as copied on the ps3 hdd.

Good for you everything turned up well.

hope my fat 60 will stay alive.
PS: when i changed my hdd i took the old one to back up everything on it. Pc can crash down too

Try to find electronics/PC stores that fix it! I know a few here, surely if you search, will find one:tup:!

I would rather take the 60GB HDD and put it into another PS3(borrow from a friend). Then you just use the back up option in system settings to backup the 60GB HDD to a external HDD. Then after he does that he can put the 60GB back in his original PS3 and get the 120GB slim from Sony. Then he can restore all of his files on the new 120GB slim.

It's better to do it from a PS3 system because I know that they have the backup option for a reason.

Definitely don't do that! The PS3 will recognise the HDD is not from the same machine and format it, that's why you can't just swap HDD's when you're getting a new PS3.

Thanks for all the help everybody! in the meantime, i got my ol' ps2 out of the closet to play some gt4 and other ps2 games... my how things have evolved

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll just ask here.
My fatboy PS3 will not play any disc.
Downloaded Demos work fine.

^ More than likely your blu-ray drive is broke which is far from uncommon. Try phoning sony, they may offer a free repair or replacement depending on the PS3's age and your luck. Even if they do charge it may be best going with them and getting a guarantee for the work rather than going independent.

BTW, now would be a good time to back up you games saves etc.

Yes, it would be best for you to use the backup utility to save your entire PS3 hard drive on a external HDD. Especially before you send it to Sony for repair where they might have to replace the PS3 with a newer one.

I used this video as a guide and got an extra month out of my ps3. I have the same problem again though and will try the method again soon.
