PS3 error - About to kick the goat skins?

My PS3 is starting to develop a error where it won't even stay on long without cutting back off. Last night, I was in the middle of the seasonals when it just cut off. Then just now when I went ot turn it back on, it cut off and the red light was blinking. What exactly would cause this? Is this the end of it?
 
Also get some quotes on how much it is to reflow your PS3.

Or if you want to DIY, check youtube for some excellent how-to's 👍
 
I don't have the PS3 on right now but while I'm looking for the cost of reflowing it, I'm also looking up instructions on how to take apart the PS3 as well as the best way to clean it out. I'm thinking my negligence on keeping it dust free on a regular basis might have contributed abit so I want to see if that might be the case. I found 1 video where it's suggested that a low power vacuum cleaner could be used, but they don't seem to specifically state how much power would be safe.
 
As much as you try to vaccum the through the vents, to actually completely clean it, you're going to have to open it up eventually. 👎

If this thing will even stay on long enough, I'm about to do it. What device can I back up all my Hard drive data to?
 
Uhh.. i dunno, actually..

I'm thinking the external HDD's would work fine :indiff:

I do have my previous original 250 GB Hard Drive from my Acer before it was upgraded. Perhaps that might work?

It is but its in an External Hard Drive enclosure, which looks something like this:

Hmm..I guess that'd work of you get a USB cable.. I guess :lol:

There are a couple tips on how to use external hard drives on your ps3 if you google (i wish it was just plug n play, but it sadly isn't)
 
Might want to make sure that it is formatted to FAT32 before plugging it in. Otherwise the Ps3 wont be able to read it.

Since Game Files are small, I suggest just a USB stick.
 
Just tryed to back up the data, the system didn't even stay on long enough for me to even start. I think it might be already too late :guilty:

Get youself an appropriate external drive enclosure, stick it in that, and use the USB port on your laptop or desktop along with a free download copy of Macrium Reflect to save a complete restorable disk image to somewhere else. (Well, as long as you're comfortable with opening up a device and removing a drive.)
A lot of experience I've had with corrupt operating systems on my customer's data acquisition PCs stems from wrecked or corrupted system files, which are required for boot up, but it tends to leave all the data (non-OS related) untouched and accessible if it's read as an external drive.

If I recall, the PS3 uses a 2.5 inch SATA Hard Drive.

Edit: Thankfully, I have just read that the original 250 GB hard drive from my Acer is also SATA. So it looks like its compatible then.

Update: I'm most certain its dead now. Just tried to turn it on and when I hit reset, it made this hiss sound and cut right back off. I'll download that program and try to back it up now.

This is the worst two days ever and I'm sure there's no more 60 GB PS3s I can afford or get:indiff:

Since i've seen YLOD, this doesn't seem to be it. If he said "A yellow light appears" then it's YLOD.

This seems to be another issue with the Ps3, a few people have said they've had it. I think it could be an overheating issue.

Have you tried the hair drier trick? I will try to find the link for it, but basically, you put your PS3 upsidedown in a box, and put a hair drier on the back full blast for 15-20 minutes, a guy was able to turn his YLOD PS3 on for about 3-4 minutes to do some quick back-ups thanks to this.

If I don't reply with a link, I believe I saw the video in the Computer & Console game thread

I haven't had a Yellow Light, only the normal lights. When this first started, I did notice without even having played it for a while that it was hot. When I tryed to turn it on earlier, again no yellow light. It had that same light when you turn on the power switch and the same green light when you hit the reset button. All it did was turn on, make a brief hissing noise then cut back off.

From the video, I can suggest two things:

Try another power point AND try another power cable. The power supply in the Ps3 may be dead.

Just tryed another power point. Did the exact same thing when I plugged it into another outlet.

Assuming you have a PS2 handy, go and get it's power cable and try starting it with that. Something in your power cable may have stuffed up.

P.S The only good thing I can see from this is, THANK GOD IT ISNT YLOD.
 
:lol: Seriously?

I've been told numerous times not to use a hairdryer since it just doesn't get hot enough :(
 
The other option was an oven! A guy did a six step video on how to fix it using a regular oven. I laughed so hard watching it. :lol:
 
Update:


I found a power cord of the exact specs as the one that came with the PS3 (10A, 125V) but it was not from a PS2. Nontheless, I plugged it in and at first, it did it again. Then I tryed something different: I turn it on, waited a few seconds then hit the restart button and it booted up :dopey: And after about a minute or two, it went back off.


I'm wondering if maybe by doing that, it actually is allowing the PS3 to cool off. Not sure, but its progress diffinately. Now if only I could get it to stay on long enough for me to back up everything.
