All

My old 'fat ' PS3 failed today with the dreaded 80010514 error. Tried all the resets but no good. Just brought a new slim 320GB one and installing GT5.

I backed up my GT5 save from the old one. So is it just a case of uploading the save to the new PS3 and 'hopefully' I should be back were I was.

Is there anything else I need to do?

regards

You need to log into the same PSN account - your savegame won't work else. That's pretty much it, I believe.

As long as you sign in with the psn ID that you saved your game save under you will be just fine. When you eventually do get your data up and loaded you will have to go through your garage and create thumbnails for most of your cars. When you put saved data on a new ps3 some of the thumbnails were cached on your old ps3 and thus will have to be created.

If you dont know how just highlight a car in your garage and press triangle and then create thumbnail. I had to do this on over 300 cars when my ps3 died.

Apart from that I did not notice any loss of anything and you will be fine.

Thanks guys

It's nearly finished loading. yes I have set the new PS3 with the same psn Id and can log onto PSN OK

I will let you know if it all works OK

Regards

What is that error? What causes it?

ylod (yellow light of death) i guess. bluray device broken or so.

got my fat ps3 almost 3 years now, i hope it´s gonna last some longer before i have to get a slime one :)

I hear ya....I bought mine three years ago as well. But truthfully, I have not used it much until GT5. That was the reason I bought it in the first place.

I had Prologue but didn't play that for very long. Hopefully, I have a couple of more good years left in it. 👍

Guys

the error is the bluray device broken. I searched the Web and tried the fixes but no good.
Anyway £289 later I'm backup and running and no loss of GT5 data...result

Anyone know (UK) if this is fixable and if so how much?
I might give Sony a call tomorrow and see what they say. I might get fixed for free !!!

Then I would have two...Hmm

My 80gig fat died 2 months after the warranty ran out. Well, i guess 14 months of seldom play for $600 dollars is depressing. SONY said they would fix it for $300. The problem is the solder on the MB melts away from the cpu/gpu pins. This is what causes the YLOD. Funny because i have owned many PC's in my life an have pushed them very hard. But i have never had the solder melt away from the cpu pins...LOL

On the bright side you can get this problem fix much cheaper at GopherMods.

My fat is still in the box, unfixed. I ended up buying a PS3 slim (sony suckered me real good).

So playstation deaths are more common than people claim...good to know...

yeah, they just happen outside of a warranty period so YOU have to pay for the repair. At least Microsoft manned up to a 3 year period for failure. I had the RROD and then the E74 error but at least I got it all done for nothing.

I had my Fat PS3 repaired for £50 (YLOD), if you call round your local PC shops they should be able to do the repair for around the same price.

I think I lost my 6 Crome Line cars, when I switched from old PS3 to PS3 slim. Already formatted the HD on the old one. Damn.

Remember to check your garage, before scrapping the old one.

Guys

GT5 runs ok, but the 'slims' seem slower at loading and access data and even downloading than the old one!!
But the graphics seem a lot clearer and sharper at 1080p on a 42" LG TV

Anyone else notice this or is it just me.

i think they will continue to become more common as we are nearing 5 years since the launch of the ps3 and i think people may be nearing the end of their ps3's life cycle. I know had 2 ps2's that the disc motor died in each of them after 5 years of use.

I don't care what other people say though, i still think that leaving your ps3 on for continuous b-spec grinding really shortens the ps3 life cycle. just my honest opinion

My advice:

Buy the warranty!! My first PS3 died in only 2 1/2 years. I bought the warranty for the new one and its been left on 4-5 days at a time since I discovered B-Spec. I can now continuously grind worry free!
