Ok so I had an exteral usb hard drive that runs off of external power. I have confirmed that it is not the dc adaptor so I'm guessing/hoping its the internal power supply. I intend to get the hdd out of the external casing (which is SATA format) and install it to my PS3. Along with upgrading my PS3's storage I am also hoping to recover my files and copy them to a new usb drive via my PS3. The problem is I've noticed that I would need to format the drive in order to do the upgrade. My question is, is there anyway I can install the hard drive and partition it so that I can recover my files and use it with the PS3?

Read my topic here. It has instructions on how to run a backup on the entire hard drive.

Also you would need to format your usb drive to FAT32 if you want to just save individual files rather than the whole hard drive.

Ok but the tricky part is I'm trying to backup files on the hard drive that I'm using to upgrade the PS3. Unfortuately, after formatting said HDD I will not be able to back up the files that are currently on it using the PS3's back up utility. Thats why I was wondering about using a partition but if there's another way to do it (the only other way I can think of is installing in my computer, backing it up on a new external hdd or dvd's then putting in the PS3) let me know.

It would be best for you to use your computer to backup the files that are on your external to your computer or dvd's. Then just install the hard drive into your PS3 after you backup your important save files from your PS3.
