Sony have seemingly thought of an answer to this with a unique feature on the PlayStation 3 which effectively allows it to clean itself. Owners of a 40Gb PlayStation 3 feel free to try this at home. By turning the console completely off from the switch at the back of the console and turning it back on while holding the eject, the PlayStation 3 console will enter a self maintenance mode. All of the fans instantly go for maximum revs and in the process makes and noise that we all thought the PS3 incapable of. Ten seconds later and the sudden burst of air from the fans has cleared the internals of all dust.

I'll second one of the opinions on a different forum - if this is such an important feature, why hasn't Sony said anything about it and why only on the 40's?

Some kid, also on YouTube, got it to do the same thing by holding his PS3 upside down.

I'm pretty sure all this is doing is causing the system to freak out, think it's overheating, and put the fans into overdrive. I don't see how spinning the fan faster would "clean" the internal components. Nobody tried putting a wet cloth or something behind the fan in order to prove that a bunch of dust comes out.

I agree, doing this just confuses the circuitry and its probably the most unhealthy thing you can do for the machine! It this was a legitimate way of cleaning it would say so in the manual...

EDIT - Just watched the video... oh boy does it sound like a jet engine when you do this, its almost scary! Flashing red lights means like system error!.. Probably shortens the life of your fan in one swoop!

maybe it's some sort of system test, like the old secret codes for mobiles that tested vibration and stuff
 
Yeah, it's probably some kind of test Sony can do if someone sends a console in for repair - bleeping a certain amount of times afterwards to say what's wrong (or OK).

I seriously doubt it's effective at cleaning out dust though. When dust is lodged on a heatsink it'll take a hell of a lot of force by air to remove it...
 
Sony has released a statement saying that it is not safe to do this, and that the 7th gear (or whatever) fans were only supposed to be used as a failsafe (say, if you have 5 space heaters running next to the PS3 (Crappy example, but it's all I got))

That's what i suspected. Would be cool if they did include a feature like that though, it sounds almost futuristic, and would be quite innovative.
 
But that still doesn't answer the question of why you can only do it with the 40GB PS3... Oh well.

I think so - dunno about how different the fans are but I do know due to the smaller processor manufacturing process there are less air vents on the front.

But the question still remains...

Edit: After quick research, these guys say...

Sony also jiggled around a few other components by making the heat pipe smaller, swapping out the motherboard for a new version, and added a button battery to keep time when the system is off.

So it's possible there has minimum changes with the fans.

I knew it wasn't safe to do! Its makes sense that that super speed setting is only for extreme temperatures like maybe playing it outside in Egypt :scared: or if your house is burning down as a fail safe.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to the official statement?

Well couldnt do it anyway (60GB) so...

I dunno... this reminds me of the 5th Gear episode (or was it TG) where someone had done Lotus's "launch control" for the Elise which entailed revving the engine to the max. No thanks. Not that I could do it on my 60gb anyway...
 
I just had a thought: Perhaps it is just a glitch with the system? Sony's statement tells us that the fans being on that high is a fail safe, but that doesn't necessarily have to do with that is talked about here. Maybe when you do the steps described in the first post, you just get crossed wires or something.

Yeah that was 5th gear, Vicky was like this sounds really bad!!!... what stupid launch system requires you to turn on the engine with your foot to the floor!

And then Clarkson on TG put the 599 in his own secret launch mode which meant confusing the paddle gearbox so it says transmission failure! :scared:
