PS3 Issue - Won't turn on

I've have a first generation ps3, the 60gb model, and after 5 years it finally broke.. well i think. Couple days ago i wanted to turn it on to play (it was on standby), so i clicked the ps3 button, it turned on, made a small noise and turned off never to be turned on again. Anyone know how to resolve this, this ps3 has been a tank and after five years makes no sense for it to break. Ive had my ps2 forever and it hasnt broken yet.

there is no lights flashing at all actually. Never had yellow, and red is not even on.

So there is no light on at all on the front? Usually there is a red light on at all times unless to power switch on the rear is turned to the off position.

Make sure the power switch is turned on in the rear of the console and if you don't have a light up front I'd say the power supply is faulty. Even with a system that has the YLoD or other issues it should still at least try to turn itself on.

If you flick the rear power switch to on and there is no red light on the front then it might be that the power supply is gone. They are quite readily available on ebay, aren't expensive at all and quite easy to install.

It could also be the fuse in the plug has gone or the wall socket your using might have a problem. I would check those too.

If there is no light at all then first thing you should think is power supply. It might give up after that time. It's easy exchangeable, it's cheap, and easy to find.

If you swap power supply to new one. Try to sell your old PS3, probably no one is going to buy it but you at least could try. And then you may buy new one. I would recommend one of the slim one.

Try do a google search with keyword your PS3 model number then PSU, it should come up with some links.
When you do get a new power supply and replacing it, might as well to consider putting new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU to help with cooling ( Arctic Silver 5 is good )or better yet, also replace the old internal fan or at least clean the whole inside from dust.

No you can't get them in store, only online. There are many on ebay, just search for 60GB PS3 power supply or you could search on google to get the model number (I can't remember it off the top of my head) and search ebay for that.

I know its a long shot but have you tried a different power cable? Also if you going to be opening it up anyway why not have a look now and see if any cables have come loose inside.

so basically it would involve me dismantling my whole ps3?

Yes, you will need to remove the motherboard for the thermal paste, the whole lot from the casing, I suggest getting it done by professional if you don't have enough experience with electronic parts or never built a PC from scratch.
It is not very difficult, there are videos on youtube that can show you how step by step if you are willing to risk it, otherwise get it done at the shop.

For cleaning, you wil only need to open the top cover, remove the PSU and fan, quite simple.

That sound was probably the sound of the transformer inside of your power supply shorting out. There may have been a surge in your power line and that ruined the transformer. I think it can be fixed by simply getting another one like suggested.

Doing the power supply is super easy and you only need to take the top cover off, replacing the thermal paste is just a recommendation to prevent a future YLOD. You would not need to replace your fan as the 60GB model had the best fan ever fitted to the PS3, later models had an inferior fan.

Not possible, you need to have the old one turned on to do the transfer, and you can't put the old HDD over to the new one either.

I'm guessing with your resistance to the replacing of the power supply you don't have a credit card and can't buy one online? It is by far the better option. Why replace it completely in the last legs of this console life?

i have one, its just i already maxed out my 60gb's of space and i can't buy another game or download any demo, so if i had a 160gb i can add another 100gb's of space

True then the choice is yours. You could also buy a larger notebook hard drive for less than $100 and get the whole thing done for about $100.

nope there was no lights at all, just the power supply broke and got a new one
