PS3: Just overheated, or potential YLOD?

So the other day, my PS3 shut off and gave me a blinking red light. When I turned it back on, it turned on for a second, showed the dreaded yellow light for barely long enough to see it, and then started blinking red again. A few minutes later, I turned it on again, long enough to eject GT5 and back up the hard disk (thank god). Yesterday I turned it on again just to see if it worked, but didn't play a game. It connected to the internet and the like, etc, and seems to be working fine.

I would like to know whether it just overheated once and probably won't do it again, or if I shouldn't use it anymore and just trade it in or something. Any answers or victims?

Red light means it overheats, yellow light means there is a hardware failure.
It's possible that you had a minor hardware failure after the heat problem, although I think it won't take too long until you get the "real" YLOD.

I have a 60GB EU launch unit and it still runs fine by the way.

Blinking red light means it's dead. You can revive it with a heatgun and the standard YLOD fix. My fix didn't last long though. Maybe a couple weeks.

If it can still turn on that's a good sign. It mean that the system isn't completely rooted.

1: (if you can withstand the pain) Do a system restore. If the software or anything is failing, this should fix it. ALSO before you do this, remember to deactivate your PSN account form your own Play Station Store. Doing so means that you don't lose another Activation spot for your PSN.

2: If that doesn't work CONTACT SONY. Even if you're not under warranty anymore, they can still be very helpful. If they offer to take it for a repair, you then decide whether you should attempt to fix it yourself or, send it to them to see if they can salvage your data as well as fixing the PS3.

3. Buy a new PS3 if they say you can't fix it, then attempt to start your PS3 up (If you can replace some parts other then the HDD it might help your PS3 stay on for longer) and attempt a system transfer (Same page as system restore). This way you don't lose your GT5 progress, and EVERYTHING is copied (Unless it's corrupted, like my Black Op's file was)

Thanks for the tips guys! Especially 'Round the Bend.
I've haven't tried a system restore, but I will shortly, I have contacted Sony and "Andrea" said that I could set it up for servicing at any time on their website in its current condition.

My plan of action at this point though is just to trade it to Gamestop with a bunch of other things so I can make use of the various gift cards and store credit that I have, unless the geniuses at GTP have a better idea :D

It's all up to you. :)

With my restart, i've decided i'll just race and buy as many rare car's as possible.. Once I find out whats rare and what's not.. :ouch:

If you do make use of your gift cards, ect, try to hassle as much as you can out of the retailer. Im sure they'll be having some christmas specials, where you can get some games for practically nothing.

Give your PS3 another day or so, then try to start it up again.

And remember, keep us updated. :D

Ok, I made use of the gift cards and such and went and bought a new PS3 "Slim" 160GB from Gamestop. Restoring backup data now, and hoping GT5 data will be copied over...

5 Minutes later:
No cigar. :(
At least I can actually play it now, though. Better than nothing.

buy the same ps3 in a shop if you can come home do backup of drives take hardrive out your old one wipe it first put in new ps3 take back to shop act innocent say it wont start up money back and new ps3 :)

Hmm if you were to do that they would start it up in store. Then send it to sony. It would look weird if a ps3 that was unable to turn on had updates on it.

The reasons I can't do that:
1. Gamestop sells the oldest systems first (the ones they've had in their inventory for the longest), and they don't put the other ones out at all - they grab them from the back, so I couldn't get my system back.
2. HDDs on PS3s are encrypted to their own unique system, so if I swapped out the drives it would still only work on the old PS3
3. I'd really rather not be that dishonest.

Ingenuity, though :dopey:

So the conclusion was that you sacrificed one thing for another?

Here's to hoping you don't ever get YLOD with the Slim! :dopey:

Although.. All this talk about YLOD.. I always get scared when I turn on my PS3 that the little yellow light it going to come up.

My original EU date launch PS3 lastet up til around FEb of this year and got YLOD. Paid Sony £130 for a refurbished unit which lasted a month then i had got a warranty with it so free of charge it was replaced ot which now i get the odd little hiccup.

Gave off stink to Sony and a brand new Slim 120gb with a 12mth warranty is arriving 29th Dec :)
