hi everyone i hope someone can help me with this my ps3 will not do 1080p any more only 1080i and 720p its a 120gb slim does any one know why. Its not the cable ive tried 3 its not my tv it works at 1080p with hd recorder and laptop and pc tower and phone. Please help

Try going into the screen settings and see if 1080p is unchecked. If it isn't, you should be able to uncheck 1080i.

Turn the PS3 in stand-by, hold the power button down for 10 seconds.
This resets the video settings, maybe it works.

Have you tried switching the HDMI port on the TV?
You wrote you tried three cables and other devices work, but not if you tried a different port.

yeah man tried all 4 ports same thing with each one. the really weird thing is on 1080p the tv is telling me input is 1080p and 61hz i didnt think ps3 went above 60hz

Hm, strange. Were there any thunderstorms or something? I have no idea how your PS3 could "break" like this, where only one resolution stops working.

no man no thunder its totally weird had a ps3 since day one never had any thing like this before i thought gt6 might have fried it but it cant be because the other resolutions are still working. wich would you recomnd 1080i or 720p

just a thought could hot swapping cables do this i thought it was cool with hdmi

HDMI is completely hot-pluggable, no problem there. Unless I missed it you don't seem to have mentioned trying another TV with the same cable and PS3 or another PS3 with the same cable and TV. Until you do those you won't know for sure that it's the PS3 at fault, so try and test those before you do anything drastic like buy a replacement console.

Well, in that case I guess all you can try is buying a replacement PS3. It sounds like you've exhausted all the other options. Surely you know someone with either an HDTV or PS3 you could trouble to help you figure out the fault, though? If I had to bet, however, I'd put my money on your PS3.

Huh, weird. What make and model is your TV, out of interest? Glad you sorted it out, though.

I can't remember the model but it's a 2 year old lg led 39inch

Even weirder i've now plugged everything back in the same as before to check and it's still fine

I wonder if it was an issue with power distribution, did you have a bunch of controllers and such plugged in or in use with the console? I only ask because I have a 120Gb and I remember having issues a while back when I tried to use a USB keyboard in the second USB port, it didn't seem to be able to power it fully (gave some error message onscreen IIRC). I know that's USB but I do wonder if some consoles don't route their power so effectively.

No man just one ds3

(Standard) USB 2.0 (or lower) data ports are limited to supply only 500mA of current, anything that tries to draw more than that will 'blow' a self-resetting fuse to prevent damaging the console, computer or whatever which comes with an accompanying message saying something is drawing too much current or power (which is almost certainly what you saw). I think the PS3 might be supplying slightly under 500mA at max draw because I've heard a lot about ports shutting down when used with devices that should be fine with standard ports. So basically the console can't give too much power to one device in such a way that it would interfere with HDMI.

As for this instance, I wonder if something plugged into the TV was 'reserving' the 1080p resolution somehow. It's impossible to say without knowing everything there is to know about the TV, the other devices and their firmware, but HDMI CEC (a control data line within HDMI, this is how the PS3 'knows' which resolutions are available if you leave it on 'auto') is a bit of a murky standard anyway.

Not that it matters now, of course.

Interesting info but at the time all i was using was a DS3 (which must have been plugged in for charging) then tried a regular USB keyboard in port 2 for typing messages in GT5 online lobbies, and my PS3 no likey, which seems odd as a PC would handle that with ease. Thinking about it, perhaps it uses all of that output to charge the controller as quickly as possible. Anyway at risk of threadjacking, will try it again some time, not sure why I didn't try it again with the controller fully charged and not plugged in to be honest!

Yeah, that's what I mean, I think the PS3 ports supply less than the standard current because I've seen a lot of people say that things their PC can deal with have made the PS3's ports switch off. It's a bit of a mystery, but you can get around it by using an externally powered USB hub if it's a big problem. I've read (on Wikipedia) that later revisions of the DualShock 3 charge at 500mA, so they should only max out one USB port, the other port should still be able to supply up to 500mA regardless of what the other port is supplying. It could be that this isn't the case, though, I've not tried to test my PS3's USB ports for that sort of thing so I wouldn't know. But standard USB 2.0 ports should each be able to supply the full 500mA regardless of anything else the system is doing.
