Hey guys, a friend of mine bought his son a PS3 for christmas so that he could race GT5 against his uncle Fewzo, but his wife bought one with only 12Gb, and GT5 won't work. it says not enough memory. How many Gig do you need for GT5, anyone know? thanks

When I first got my PS3 and GT5 I had to download 1.5GB I think but I'm sure it's bigger now because of the updates that has been happening. I dunno why it wont allow you when you have a couple of GB free but I guess it's just the system precautions.

If you want to install it to your HDD it always say that it needs 8GB but it really only needs 5GB. Happened to my other friend as well he couldn't play because there is not enough space so he just sold it but for you guys the only thing you can do is upgrade the HDD get a external HDD or something. I think this is what is happening you have 12GB right when you look in your HDD again its not 12GB because they reserve extra GB for system and security files. So I had the same problem as your having right now but it was on my xbox 20gb so I learned from that and bought a PS3 320gb

TwistyDrift is right.
GT5 allocates and reserves data which is close to 8-10 GB, and on top of that there is 1.5 GB of updates for GT5.
This easily explains your shortage of memory.

Probably the best option is to buy an external hard drive (with more than 20 GB) and then swap out the HDD in the playstation with the new one. This is pretty easy to do and you can find tutorials on youtube explaining how (and I believe it's also in the PS3 manual as well).

Otherwise, maybe you can return the PS3 for another one with more HDD space?

Best thing to do would be buy a bigger hard drive for it. 500Gb western digital (cavier black) ~$100
Simple swap and you have more than enough space for gt5 and other games.

Or get a bigger SSD drive.
The 120/128 gig version from samsung (840) is pretty avordable.

GT5 loading times are half from the ssd compared to an 5400rpm hdd.

Did she buy one with 12g or 120g? I've never heard of a PS3 with only 12g capacity. If it's 12 gig available space then you either need to delete a few gigs of data or get a new hard drive, any laptop hard drive fits and is very easy to do.

Yes there is 12gb version too 👍

Wow, I thought my old 40g was limited , thanks for the heads up.

Same here with so many games I used to have to delete data for almost every game I wanted to play.

Mind you I have the 320gb now so all is good.

For the 12GB version you need an extra bracket to fit a bigger harddrive. You can not simply switch the drive as with all the other playstation 3 models. You will find all the information at the playstation website itself.
My suggestion: Delete everything on the 12 GB one, bring it back and buy a 500 GB which is not that much more in price.
The 12 GB model is really a joke. It can not even install GT5? Wow.

Sell your 12GB and get 250GB or 500GB but honestly anything over 320GB (What I have) is way too much but at the end of the day it depends on what you actually do (Movies, Songs etc..)

Never heard of the 12GB PS3 but compared to the likes of the newer ones they have like 500GB the Super Slim.

The 12gb is a superslim I think its sonys answer to the xbox 360 4gb.

I got the 12gb super slim after my fat ps3 died and easily put in a 500gb hdd from my old one.

The caddy isn't really necessary, just use something that will support it from underneath. I used the caddy from the old one and just bent the frame until it fit in the slim

@OP

Check out www.newegg.com

They have HDD deals right now.

2.5 inch Western Digital 1TB
$80

And many more I just don't know how much you are wanting to spend.

Can a ps3 recognise a 1TB drive?

Yeah. As long as it fits in the caddy it will run. At least I know this for sure on the fatty and slim.

I used to modify them for friends

Yes the ps3 can recognise a 1TB drive but if your planning to put one in your PS3 make sure it will fit it. I've heard that you need a 9.5mm 2.5inch but some people modify the caddy to get the maximum of 11mm I could be wrong but it was a friend who told me that the maximum was 9.5mm 2.5inch.
