Does anyone know how to get an Open NAT Type a.k.a. NAT Type 1?

If so please help me.

Unplug your modem from your router and plug it into your PS3.

You now have NAT Type 1.

See I only have a modem that my ISP gave me and I have it hard wired and I used to use the PPPoE Username and Password for the IP Addressing setting and I would get NAT Type 1 but now when I do that the PS3 fails to obtain the IP Address?

Was on Customer Service with Tech Support for almost 2 hours yesterday and no matter what they changed I would always get NAT Type 2 and they even did a static IP to the PS3 and the Xbox worked Wireless didnt try Hard Wired yet but anything wireless works fine.

NAT Type 2 is the open NAT type on a router. Seeing as it has wireless you have a modem with a build in router. Unless you can completely shut off the router part you will have NAT 2. And that should work just as NAT 1.

A DMZ is still going to be NAT'ed isn't it, just not firewalled? From the Internet it will look like the PS3 is on the public IP, but I'm pretty sure the PS3 will know that it's not.

With DSL, if you MUST have your public IP actually on the device then you must put the DSL router in bridged mode.

How about: Why do you want NAT type 1? How would that improve your life? Or gaming?

When I had NAT Type 1 before I could see everyone in GT6 servers now I have NAT Type 2 and forget it I see maybe half of the people on track.

NAT type 1 means your PS3 is directly connected to the internet through a modem and its IP address is public. Its IP address doesn't need translating so Network Address Translation isn't necessary.

NAT type 2 means your PS3 is connected through a router to the internet and its IP address is part of the router's IP range. Its private network IP address (192.168.0.2, for example) is translated by the router so that incoming traffic destined for it gets routed to it and not any of the other devices attached to the router (like your PC, laptop or smartphone).

NAT type 3 is the same as NAT type 2, only with firewalls restricting its access. This is officially Bad for gaming.


If you're in a house with lots of devices connected to switches or a router, you won't get NAT type 1. Even shoved into the DMZ so that the firewalls don't restrict it and all ports are open, it'll still have a network address that needs translating. For NAT type 1, you'll need a dedicated modem (and line) for just the PS3.


However, type 1 NAT isn't the same as "Open". Type 1/2/3 refers to PS3 NAT, whereas Open/Strict/Moderate refers to game NAT (as reported by certain games) and, usually, deals with port forwarding (or rather Port Address Translation - a subfunction of NAT). A quick summary would be that if the router ports required for the PS3 are shared (by other PS3s, other consoles or other network devices), you'll have a Moderate NAT and if they're blocked or in use by one device you'll have a Strict NAT. If the ports are open and available to the console, it'll be an Open NAT - such as if the PS3 is in the router's DMZ.

So you can have NAT type 1 or 2 and still be Open, Moderate or Strict (whereas Type 3 will probably always be Strict). But plonk the PS3 into the router's DMZ and you'll have NAT type 2 and Open NAT type. Like I do.

Hey guys, as I'm not the best with computers, I need a bit of help, but only people with a Thompson TG782T will be able to help me. So I've followed all the steps on internet tutorials, but when I get to the DMZ stage, It doesn't come up with the option to forward it to my chosen IP, suggestions?

Untrue. It's just a router dude.

Make sure that you are logged into the router software as admin, not user. You may not be seeing full menu's unless you are in admin.
Not all routers have the option to change the DMZ settings.
Lastly, routers are relatively cheap, so you have the option of getting one that would better serve your needs for little cost.

What does it show use as DMZ option?

Some routers ask for a Mac Address instead of IP address.

I noticed what my problem is but I have no idea how to fix it. My problem is, my PPPoE Username and Password randomly stopped working. My xbox and PS3 used to use that for my IP Addressing but now it don't work anymore. Any thoughts on how to fix this? Or is my modem just dying?

Call your ISP and tell them you need their new PPPoE username and password as it stopped working suddenly and see what they say.

Will do I will call them tomorrow as it is Sunday and already almost 7pm. I also believe each customer has their own Username and Password.
