PS3 or a new pc

Here is the thing...

My pc is 5 years old and I can hardly play anything on it.
It is time for me to "SOON" buy either a new pc or a PS3 + GT5:Prologue.

The only game I see forward to on PC is Starcraft 2 and online play with it.
The only game I see forward to on PS3 is GT5 and online play with it.

I have been thinking about this for months and really can not decide about it.
So what I wanna ask is, what is your personal opinion about GT5prologue online play so far? Is there enough "serious" players online and is it easy to find people to play with? How is the competition?

I have played Age of Mythology, Age Of Empires 2 and 3 online (pc) and that was great fun. Online play is what I prefer because there is always some great competition there compared to "dead" single mode.

I'm seeing forward your opinions. 👍

Do you need a computer for anything other then gaming? Do you do any photo editing, movie editing, etc.? A computer is far more useful then a gaming console since you can do so much more on it, but if all you do is use a computer to game then you might want to look into getting a PS3.

Personally I use my computer for everything and will always invest money in that over gaming consoles, but I have a reason for doing so.

If you can, wait till the Tokyo Games Show is over (just in case they announce a new, cheaper PS3 model and finally a GT5 release date). But if you want a new PC just for Starcraft, buy a PS3.

Personally I reckon PC is a good choice, because its so much more flexible and nothing beats mouse + keyboard for a first person shooter or strategy game. Its really up to what sort of games you play and how you like to play them. Personally, the only reason why I want a PS3 is for GT5P. Couldn't care less about MGS4, Killzone looks cool but it seems counter productive to buy a PS3 to play a FPS game. Many of the good games on consoles in general are cross platform and play better on PC than consoles anyway.

But if you prefer console type games, you'll probably get more bang for your buck. If the only reason you want it is for GT5P, you'd have to ask yourself whether you're better off with the PC, especially since its much more flexible.

Gaming only.
What I want is pure gaming fun. A great online challenge.

You know, what really drags me to buy PS3 is GT5 and actually Tekken 6.

I have been a racing fan since 1986 or 1987 when I first started to play Outrun on C64 , Le Mans 2 and Pitstop 2. Loved racing games since then. First time I played GT was 1998 and thats when I dreamed about a GT game that you could play online vs others. That time has come and actually I do not know why I am even hesitating to buy PS3 and GT5 prologue right now, lol. Maybe because I have read so much negative stuff about online racing...

Hard decision this...

Yeah same here, the only reason I want PS3 is because of GT5P and actually Tekken 6.

The great thing is that both games are playable in online mode...
But the real problem for me is all the negative stuff I have read about online play on PS3. Maybe the things will get better when the GT5 is out...

Team Fortress 2 and Starcraft is what interest me to play "online" on PC.

But since I am such a racing fan, the GT5 is what I really want. But as I said I read so much negative stuff about online play in GT5 so I am really hesitating just because of that...

Online even with GT5:P is fine, if a little frustrating at times. But it's still beats playing against the A.I. any day of the week. I'm sure GT5 will have private rooms where you can choose who you play against (like fellow GTPlanet members) and avoid those who aren't interested in driving in the spirit of the game.

I think it all depends on the budget you have for the pc. If you intend to spend as much on a pc as a ps3 youre better of buying a ps3. Because playing games on a pc like starcraft 2 with loads of eye candy is going to require a videocard that's at least the halve of the price of a ps3. Adding a good processor motherboard and the other bits you need and you'll be probably looking at twice the price of a ps3 for a good gaming pc that will last for a few years.

Buy a PC mate. A PC has much more functionality than a PS3. Then buy a ps3...GT5 is most likly 8-10 months from now.

The only problem I see with that is that a good gaming PC is going to be more then a PS3. My newest computer was close to a $1,000, without a monitor or peripherals. Granted it's pretty slick though and plays just about everything I have on the highest resolution.

This is true. I was thinking as far as usage and functionality.

Here in Australia a PS3 costs $700AUD with a couple of games, my friend managed to build a decent gaming PC for not much over $800 (had a 4850, E8400, I think he used his old case but got a new PSU). It all depends how much you want to spend. I built another computer for a different friend and it cost him $1500, but thats because he had that much money to spend and wanted the best in that price range (initially he wanted to spend $2000 dollars but I talked him down to $1500 since the extra 500 wouldn't have offered much better performance).

That's a tuff call right now with the pending release of GT5 and is not out yet. If you can afford a new PC now for the of current racing sims out there and get a PS3 when GT5 comes out, you would be set, but not knowing if that's possible you may be in a position of one over the other. If the current discussion is based on GT5: Prologue only, a PC might offer a better solution at this time, but GT5 is going to be must have in my estimation.

Of course you should buy both a PC and a PS3:sly: Just want to mention there is a number of great racing games for PC. The online mode works great in most of them. GTR Evo is an example of a good PC game thats even more sim like than the GT series of PD.

If your core purpose of the new machine is gaming, with PC functionality second, get the PS3.

PS3 is built to be expandable: i.e. you can install your own hard-drive (I'm using a 200GB notebook drive), and it supports a secondary operating system (i.e. Yellow Dog Linux). The Linux OS give you PC functionality, though gaming is not really an option (that's what the PS3 OS is for!).

Yellow Dog is great: internet browsing, email, documents, spreadsheets, mp3's etc.. :-)

EDIT: Also remember that PC gaming requires lots of "configuration" generally (something that I dot not miss now I use a PS3!). With PS3 you insert the disk & go :-) 6 axis DS2 controller rock as well. PS3 supports Logitech G25 also, so GT5P is a blast. Online MP is dead easy, stable and fun. PS3 FTW!

Regardless of GT5P, GT5 is probly coming out soon, so if you're debating because "it's only a prologue" then get the PS3. And an add-on fan.

Yellow Dog seems to be a great thing! If I get PS3 I will for sure get it!

Absolutely, the purpose is GAMING ONLINE :)
Games that interest me to play on PS3 online is GT5 and Tekken 6.
And on PC I would only play Starcraft 2 because I loved the first one so much.
I dont think I would have time to play anything else, too adictive to online play.

I think I'm very close to decide what to do. :scared:

Well, for a gaming platform, a PS3 can be up to 80% cheaper to get into. I know that would be a deciding factor for me if I wasn't willing to drop $1500 on a "ok" gaming PC.

I also like the plug and play ease of use with the PS3 vs. a PC as already mentioned. Games are being designed for specific hardware, whereas PC games are more generalized code and it's up to you to get your PC updated to the correct configuration, and in some cases are at the mercy of the developer to provide updates so you can even play the game.

;)

I would wait until after TGS. If nothing is announced, buy the PC.

Maybe just upgrade the PC with a new CPU and some ram and also get the ps3 if your budget will stretch.

If your motherboard is too old and does not accept any modern CPU's then a Motherboard and CPU bundle is a good choice, then just add your other bits. You can probably get a motherboard and CPU bundle then add a preowned Graphics card that will play most games at a decent frame rate for under £180-250, then just buy a second hand PS3 for £140 and you are done.

PS

If I replace my Core 2 Duo E6300 I will give it to you if you pay P&P.

I would say: Buy a PC and buy a PS3 later. You could buy a PS3 now, but as far as we know it can possibly take another 2 years till GT5 gets released (or 2 months), and it could be that the online mode sucks as hard as the GT5: Prologue online mode. If you buy a PC your at least 100% sure that you can play Starcraft 2 this year, and that it has a decent online mode.

If i had to choose at this moment i would go for the PC just because there are way too much uncertainties for GT5 at the moment.

If online gaming is the primary purpose, PS3 wins for me. The problem with PC online gaming, in my experience, is two fold: 1, PC and software configurations over MP are almost always different, and 2, PC hardware becomes obsolete very quickly. On the configuration front, I cannot tell you how many hours I've spent customising my favourite on-line game, rFactor. ARMA2 looks amazing, but I don't have the hardware to run it (i.e. my desktop became out of date!). To run something with ARMA2 at full whack would require a monster machine: bang for buck, PS3 wins hands-down. You can never be sure though of compatibility with the servers or the clients: there are just too many variations (mods, patches, controller configs etc. etc.). GT5P gives a perfectlty useable online experience, which I am sure will improve with the full GT5.

I agree, YDL is pretty cool. Check out some YouTube videos for an idea of what it's about. Highly customisable and works great. If you go the PS3/Linux route, be sure to do all that stuff (i.e. new HD (not essential but recommended) and HD partition/Linux install) before you start downloading and installing games/saves/demos etc to your PS3, else backing up makes the process more time consuming. Do all the Linux stuff before you start using your PS3 properly and the process will be easier :-)

Good luck with whichever choice you make.

I'd purchase a new computer, but I personally work on the computer, and a ps3 would be insufficient for what I do. I love my photoshop, I love Sony Vegas, and I need a powerful computer to run these programs efficiently. But! If you are just a normal guy without any needs for a new computer other then gaming, I sappose I'd go with a PS3.

Also! If your a student, I'd go with a new computer, these days I wouldn't be able to live without a good computer as a student.

Depends on the budget of your PC. I assume it isn't much though since it is either a PC or PS3. Unless you are willing to spend around $1000 I would go with the PS3.

If you like racing games, and you buy PS3 for GT5P, and a future GT5(it comes) the PS3 its a great console, the best for me, the online is good and its powerfull hardware.
But, in a PC you can play games like MMO, any, AND games like GTR EVO and RFACTOR, two of the best sim racing games.
For last, i recently buy a DFGT and with RFACTOR its so ****** good, its realy impresive.
The only think i can say you for sure is that take your time to choose.

Sorry my english.

PD: same think for GT5P and DFGT.

Buy a PC and a PS3! :)
Buy a cheap PC that will run Starcraft II. Or better yet, some some bucks and build one yourself.
The online play of GT5P is terrible! However, if/when PD makes private lobbies available you can race with your friends and you won't have to suffer pickup races with whacked-out crazies who like to crash into other pilots.
:)

If i was you I'd get the ps3, I've never played any games on a pc, I use a mac for all my email / internet based activity and got a ps3 just for gt5. Since prologue has been out for a while & started to get a bit samey I bought a 2nd hand ferrari challenge & I must say that its better than I was expecting, the wait for gt5 isn't going to be as tedious for me anymore.

Ps. If you haven't already got one & can afford it you may want to consider getting a steering wheel as it makes the gaming experience so much better :)
