Here in a month or two we are going to buy a Wii AND another console aside from the Nintendo. Bear with me please, I currently own a PS2...in fact I just had to buy a new console because the old one moved out with my pregnant daughter! My family plAYS games on the Nintendo platform such as Donkey Kong, Mario and the like whereas my youngest daughter(10) and I play some PS2 based games. She is into Jak and Daxter and we have bought all the games to keep her going on that and personally I play racing games exclusively. I own NASCAR2005, NEED For SPEED:indiff: Corvette Evo:yuck: and ofcourse GT3,GT4 and Toca 3 and have the Logtech DFP wheel and am seriouslyflirting with getting the G25 at a later date. I still have some time left with the big three aforementioned games but in thinking of the future andgames to come and those currently in production which platform will be better suited for me, the PS3, or the XBox 360? Mind you, I know nothing about Forza, or Formula 1 or any of the other Racing games that are exclusively XBOXwhich is why I am asking this question today.I look forward to GT5, but if the XBOX games have similar physics and are just as realistic then...welllll....Personally I have found the basic physics of TOCA and the way the cars behave in the game to rival if not surpass GT4 but the force feedback in GT4 is over the top, as well as the lay out of the game. From what I've seen in previews the XBOX games appear to have crazy real graphics but that don't mean nothing if the game is lame.

So there is my delimna. I will truly appreciate all feedback and take every ones input to heart...if its serious.:tup:thanks:tup:

I also seem to think I have read somewhere in this forum that not all PS3s will be backwards compatable. If so.. up to what date of manufacture dos the PS3 stop reading PS2 discs?

It really doesn't work like that. It's about the games, I have both and the only difference is...

360 + Games = Gaming NOW

PS3 + No games = Future Gaming.

There - Fixed that for ya....

I have all three systems (Wii, 360, & PS3) and they all have their strengths a weaknesses. For gaming I prefer the 360 since I think it has the widest selection of games, for exclusive racing game Forza 2 is really good. However, you can not play next generation movies on it, the hard drive isn't nearly big enough, and you really have to take care of the system to make sure it doesn't break on you. People will tell you every 360 is plagued, which isn't true, but there are some reliability issues with some 360's. Microsoft is good at taking care of any problems though.

I use my PS3 as a media device more than anything else since the Blu-Ray movies look really good on it and I find it easier to play music, stream videos, and do other things to that affect on it. Folding at Home is also a really cool thing to explore as well. I feel the PSN store is laid out better and easier to use then the 360's marketplace...mainly because it uses real money instead of these points things. Also they seem to offer more in the way of games and demos. The PS3 has built in wireless as well, which makes it world's easier to connect to your computer, although I've had quite a few issues with the internet connection being interrupted but this could be a problem on my part. I find the games however to be a bit weak in terms of titles out there, but there looks to be some decent games coming down the line.

I like both systems for different reasons. One is not better than the other (some people will tell you otherwise), it just comes down to which one YOU like more. If you like racing games you might want to get a PS3 since it has F1:CE (a game I didn't care for but many other loved it), Motorstorm (another game I personally didn't care for), and at some point in the next two years we might get GT5 which should be good if the demos are anything to go by.

Look at the games offered by both systems, look at the specs of both systems, and figure out what else you want to do with the system other then play games (if games are in then so be it). Do you have an HDTV? If you do the PS3, I think, looks better. If not the 360, I think, looks better on a SDTV, but still pretty good in HD.

I've got a 360, don't have a PS3 though. From what I've seen of PS3 I wasn't impressed. For the moment, the only reason I'd buy a PS3 is for a blu-ray player and at the moment that isn't enough for me.

Here's what I think of the 360. It's some really nice games. It seems to get the good games all the time. In the last few months, the only games I've been playing are Forza 2, PGR4, Halo 3 and more recently, Mass Effect and Rock Band. The reason I've been playing only these games is because I just keep on coming back to them, they're just that good. I've been playing Forza 2 consistently since it came out in June.

The only downfalls of 360: creates a lot of heat output, also makes noise, and depending on your luck, you may or may not get the RROD. I once got it (twice in 1 day) about 1 and half years ago playing FIFA 2006 (so this was like 1-2 month after I'd gotten it) and since then I've been holding the power supply suspended rather than on the floor and I also have 3 120mm fans at the back of my cabinet. I also have an A/V receiver that gets very hot underneath the 360, but the noiseless fans seem to do their job. Anyway, I haven't gotten the RROD since that one time in 2006 summer. However I do get a freeze every now and then, probably happens like once a week or so.

Well they both have their strengths and weaknesses... In terms of gaming, i think the 360 is better right now because developers seem more comfortable with it and it had a lot of time to release exclusive games.

The PS3 is more technically advanced and more reliable, though. It comes with way more HDD space right out of the box and is really handy on your home computer network. You can also surf the internet and transfer files from your PC, which is what i use it for most. The users on the 360 Live network are also very immature in comparison to the PSN, although of course you'll occasionally get some dumb kid singing "I'm a little teapot" during COD4 or what have you.

You can also take into account that Sony is dedicated to keeping the PSN running for free and with an open-ended layout for game content. Live on the other hand you must pay for and is pretty buggy (wasn't it down for 3 weeks or something recently?).

All in all i recommend the PS3. It's just a better investment, especially as HD-DVD is slowly going the way of VHS after DVD came out.

Good luck.

I have a 360 but plan on getting a PS3. I am impressed from what I have seen with the PS3 and from what people have told me.

PS3 makes my xbox 360 look crap. I really want a PS3 but I always end up spending my money on my car instead :D

I own a PS3 and have been very pleased with it, plays all the games I want, has a great Blu-Ray player, and media funtions.

But it also kinda depends, the PS3 has better hardware and probably the best future in the gaming industry but the X360 offers alot of games now. That being said, there are alot of games coming out for the PS3 in 2008 that are looking like great titles. I am not sure what the releases for the 360 are in 2008 but I know the PS3 has a great lineup of games.

Here are a set of videos that are about 10 minutes long each, it is DLB talking about the XBOX360 being the now and PS3 is the future, there are 4 parts and he seems to get a little biased at some parts but still good info.

Also, Sony has announced a price drop for both the 40GB and 80GB PS3's, price drop, the 40GB is going to be $299.99 and the 80GB is $449.99, both are great deals and if I paid $659.99 plus tax on a launch 60GB PS3 and you can pretty much get the same thing for $299.99, that is a great deal nomatter who you are, Xbox/Nintendo/PS fan.

for me .. my Xbox is catching dust now.. well its my borthers.. and i own a PS3.. 1080p.. plays blurays movies.. is set up in main living room.. and PS3 comes with wireless internet connection.. so its realy to set up...

and ppl say Xbox have more good games... well tell yourself what games you like.. and i bet you wont buy every game out there...
and PS3 has free online.. and most online titles that are PS3 excluse have really really almost 0 lag.. games like warwhack and resitance..
PS3 in the end has more potential and longer games

I'll chime in.... With all three systems, the PS3 gets the most use for games as well as media sharing. I can have my Nero (or other media servers running) running on my PC with my audio and video files that can be streamed to the PS3....pretty cool feature. This helps make the PS3 as a media entertainment box, more than just a gaming console, not to mention Blu-Ray support and is becoming the dominantly support HD Disc format. USB support, linux support, internet with browsing support, advanced hardware, quality build....plus FREE online gaming support. I've had mine for over a year and don't hesitate to use it. I have not found any backwards compatibility issues.

The 360, well......although I would say XBOX Live is a superior network for online gaming, it COST MONEY. Not so cool...but I understand that keeping these networks running cost money, although it seems most games are hosted locally...so why does it cost so much? To support Microsoft's movie rental network...that costs money to rent movies from? I'm also afraid to play my 360 more than I have to because of the weak hardware that has plagued so many owners. 2 months after my purchase, I got the Red Ring of Death and had to replace it with my $60 extended best buy warranty (that's only good for one product exchange by the way....). With the few exclusives, one could wait for the PC version or get both consoles. The 360 definitely has more games so you'll have to decide your priority. I will say that the PS3 collection is growing and will continue to grow. You also need to look at how many games you are planning on getting right away....sure the 360 has more games, but are you ready to drop a ton of cash on a bunch of games? If so, then save your money and get both consoles for the exclusives. I will say that when games come out for both platforms, I will get the PS3 version every time because I know the PS3 will turn on. It's like playing roulette everytime I turn on the 360. Just my thoughts....

I will get the PS3 version every time because I know the PS3 will turn on. It's like playing roulette every time I turn on the 360.

Thats the exact same reason i get the PS3 version. I've never committed to the 360, I hated paying for XBL when I barely played games online. That made paying a waste of money and the games I played Forza and PGR got dull too fast. I'm not the type of person that HAS to play every new game out there. Gears wasn't all that to me and I like Rainbow Six Vegas and UT3 more. And I can play them for free with PS3.

I never liked having to change batteries and buying the charge kit is what M$ wants you to do. Isn't a charge kit more practical than a proprietary head set? Why? You have to pay for Gold membership to use your head set online. Too many thing circles around money. You can say the same about Sony But! You dont need to buy anything else to charge your controller, you can use old PS2 cables, most bluetooth ear pieces work and the online is completely free. You don't ever need to buy a storage device(not standard with the 360).

If you hadn't noticed I don't mention games much because game are a given and you can't ignore the other features.

And Road Rash the G25 will be useless with the Xbox 360 and it and its wonderful gate shifter works with some PS3 games including Full gate shifting and clutch support. GT5 Prologue will be out soon and you can count on the next Race driver supporting it.

If you can find a 60GB get it right away otherwise forget about backwards compatibility with PS2.

I would like to also point out that the opinions on this board will be PS3 slanted, just as if you went to a site about Forza and asked this same question you would get a 360 slant. Just bear this in mind when reading through the different opinions.

Anyways on the issue of buying things I see Sony doing the same thing with the PS3 as well, just in a different way. There is no way to get HD right out of the box with the PS3 because it doesn't come with component cables...only composite. I also find the games on the PSN store to be more expensive as well as the accessories.

I don't agree with the whole money thing either company does, but people continue to pay it so they will continue to do it...that is why XBL is $50 a year.

Also with the HD thing, I'm still yet to get the 360 to do 1080p which is quite annoying but the PS3 does it with no problems which is something I really did like about it.

I thought that was annoying too, but it's $13 for a new HDMI cable. Not a big factor in determining which console to get.

The PS3 is really reliable and does a lot of other things besides play games, buy a 360 if you just want just gaming but I would recommend the PS3 all the way because you can never have enough of everything and you will be happier in the long run with the newest and more future proof technology!

It's $13 if you wait a couple of days for it to be shipped via an online order, if you want it through a store with the now factor look to pay at least $70 for one if not more at some stores. It just really annoyed me though that I had just spent $600 on a system and they didn't even give me all the proper cables.

Oh to answer your question the current 80GB is backward compatible through emulation. Or you could get an original 60GB from ebay which had the EE+GS (PS2) on board.

Sony currently are only offering the 80GB with this support, as for the future they may scrap BC together however new models are planned with larger hard drives which will probably retain BC, if not just buy a PS2 for like a few bucks!

The X360 has like a Pentium 3 chip or something inside, its all basically stock PC components running windows XP in the background! You could say for the price its a bit of a joke because if you bought those PC components you could get them a lot cheaper (but obviously wouldn't run PC games as amazingly). They are probably going to have to do a new xbox with HDDVD half way through the PS3's lifecycle which Sony want to last 10 years +!

The PS3 went 'lets all be bold pioneering techy people' and developed the most powerful home use chip ever created (Cell Broadband Engine) which is being used for many applications including things like the medical field. Coupled with the RSX graphics processor it makes for a very powerful system. Yeah it may have been the difficult route to get a similar outcome but you have to give them credit for a beautiful piece of engineering.

The way the PS3 does everything is nothing like standard PC architecture, everything is custom inside the unit and it has one of the most well thought out heatsink / fan systems ive even seen which means it will run in extreme heat and never die like a 360's ROL error. Plus its got Blu Ray the format which is currently outselling HDDVD 2-1 and has huge storage compared to standard DVD's.

As for the looks I think the 360 looks a bit immature and gimmicky (lets copy the ipod), the PS3 looks like some 80's AV or VCR unit, it looks heavy, stylish and subtle like something B&O would offer and it also stays true to the PS2's design. But looks are really ones own opinion.

Basically you get more for your money with the PS3. And lets not get into calculating this and that, not paying for online is good enough for me. 10 years of paying xbox live down the line I would be seriously pissed! Plus you feel that the PS3 is worth more because its got more of the latest stuff in it.

Robin

Everyone has said most everything there is to say about them. I have the PS3 and the PSP and I love them both. HDMI cables are $20 at Wal-Mart, $30 if you get the PS3 tagged ones in the video game center.

I stream stuff from my PC using Nero Media Home and it transcodes on the fly to mpg2 and MP3 so I have no unknown file types.

If you just want gaming it is all in what kind of games you enjoy. I have found the PS3 to be better for sim-like racing and the 360 has better arcade style racing. But I also prefer the GT series over Forza.

Really, it depends on what you are looking for. If it is just gaming then the 360 may be an obvious option. But the PS3 will give you what you take out of it . Want to make it a Linux machine? It will do that. Need a bigger hard drive? Sure thing. HD movies, yesiree. Honestly, if teh new designs have the 360 reliability fixed then you are good to go and it is a great ganmers system. The PS3 is the techno geeks system. Which would be why I have it.

Wow, Thats a lot to chew on!!!! Well one thing I've gathered from 90% of the posst is the reliability issue of the Xbox360 against thwe PS3. Reliability will always be an issue with me a I like things to work especially expensive things!!!I will be the first to admit tat I have a lot to learn about all this HDTV, BLue Ray and multi media stuff but at the same time it looks as though I'm going to be learning it fast! One thing I know for sure is that all the games my family plays are on the Nintendo and Sony consoles. I don't see Sony giving up on the Jak and Daxtedr series which my 10 year old daughter is immersed in. She has just beat the first game and started the second, and we still have all the rest which we bought ahead of time. My passion is racing games which the PS2 has licked with the Gran Turismo series, and I personally think TOCA 3 is one of the best. Also learning that the XBOX doesn't support the G25 wheel...

There seems to be a whole mess of features that I wasn't aware of so I think I'm going to spend some time at the PlayStation Website. Many thanks everyone.

Road Rash you can't go wrong with the PS3 based on your personal criteria:

Need For Speed Pro Street
GT5
TOCA
Ferrari Challenge

All(or will) use the G25 and some with gate shifting. The 360 has no G35 support.

And since you favor the classic types of games that were on PS2 then PS3 will be satisfying. You don't seem too be heavy into first person Shooters or action games so that makes you choice easier. There is no Jak N Daxter but you can count on one next year the same way Insomniac did with Ratchet and Clank, making there flagship series their second game.

If you like TOCA a new one called TOCA RACE DRIVER - GRID was announced coming soon... heres a nice screeny!

Ones things for sure you wont get Jack and Dakster or Gran Turismo on another system!

Funny you mention Rathcet and Clank...My little girl has voiced a want to try that one out too! To be honest I had been lookinbg towards a PS3 for a couple months just because the racing games I play but thenat the same time when you actually get close to being able to shell out the coin for a new system if your anything like me you start checking into all the available options. Admittedly its also better to ask those who already own either one or both than trying to compare features off of websitesfor one or the other. Be it a game console, a camera body or an amplifier.:sly:

I made the mistake of buying a 2nd hand (used) Xbox360. Lasted about a week before it broke. Took it back to the shop and bought a new one. Next up was a Samsung HDTV and then last Easter I decided I'd get a PS3. Wouldn't like to even add up the cost of that lot with the amount of Games I now own.

I own both as to not miss out on the best exclusive's that are availble to both consoles. Xbox360 - Forza 2, Gears Of War ect, PS3 - GT, Rachet & Clank, Metal Gear Solid and Uncharted Drakes Fortune which is probably one of the best games availble on the PS3.

Hard to say which is the best, all I know is that my Xbox360 is used a lot more than the PS3 at the moment.

Well it's the truth for me.. I don't watch Blu Ray and I don't have games to play for it.

Now... If your asking me what system do I buy because I WANT the system. PS3 all the way, duh. Bottom line is it comes down to games to me. That's the only reason keeping me with a 360... I'm not even talking about online play either.

One thing that was touched on was developing PS3 games is difficult, mainly because it's so foreign to the programmers. It seems that some of the ports to the PS3 have not be up to par with the 360 counterparts. EA is notorious for making money, not necessarily into making a quality game. I will save additional comments about this for another thread. When they start to really make games to the potential of the PS3, LOOK OUT. It should be pretty impressive. Drakes Fortune, Uncharged just touches some of the power of the PS3. Hopefully this will tell the big corporate number crunchers that time invested in the PS3 technology will only yield bigger profits down the road, resulting in less ports and more direct programming for the PS3 platform. Lets not forget, at least for the time being, that pirating Blu-Ray games are expensive and unsuccessful on a large scale which helps to protect profits, unlike M$ platform games......

This is not a dig at the PS3 and I know many people like the games on it. With that said I want to say graphics really don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. If the game play is crap, yet it looks great no one is going to want to play it. I will never understand the fascination of people wanting a shiny game.
