PS3 Overheating Problem

I keep hearing these horror stories, I have the "2nd" gen 40GB Fatty PS3 (bought in 2007, the first of the non-backward compatible PS3s) with a 500GB HDD upgrade (2011), still holding strong till this day... knock on wood....

=P was playing GT6 for 8 hours yesterday, i think the cold weather helps

I swear GT5 killed my first ps3. Tread carefully.
I swear it was Grand Theft Auto 5, not GT6....

Well atleast for me.
I used to have a 60GB, which died after 4 days of playing GTA5.
Is it Rockstargames' fault?
Is it my fault?
Or did my PS3 just run out of breath (entirely).

8 years of hard work (sometimes even more then 12 hours a day) took it's toll.

It's almost like a lightbulb, never knowing when it will stop working.
Claiming it is game X, Y or Z is just remarkably short sighted...

I have a Slim 250GB PS3, and everytime I put in GT6, the disk does not want to be read. The drive spins up, then stops, and I hear these clicking sounds coming from the drive. I have to take it out and put it in repeatedly until I get lucky and GT6 loads without issue. The game doesn't overheat my console within the first 10 minutes (although the fan gets louder the longer I play it, but that's typical). What do you guys think is the issue? I asked on another forum, and someone suggested that maybe the laser is dying. What do you think?

GT5 murdered my 40 Gb fatty, but I keep resurrecting it from the jaws of the Lights of Death. I think I've had to "reflow" the main board about 6 to 9 times since last summer. At this point I'm not buying another PS3, I'll just reflow it 'til Gran Turismo switches over to the PS4.

I think the main reason for the overheating and subsequent LOD is the fan's heatsink warps over time and no longer has a proper fit and heat conductive properties.

BTW GT6 is actually easier on my PS3 than GT5.

oh no

these are not good news, i hope my console survives
mokocchi, my new superslim ps3(my third ps3 :<<< thx $ony) arrived today, now updating the firmware! Its very quiet and checked that the air from behind is a bit hot!

very cool, im thinking of buying a 12gb and using my 80gb harddrive
hope your console doesn't overheat buddy

my slim throttled pretty hard on gt6, but after i put it vertical its fine and i have no more slowdowns on bathurst. in gt5 i never had such problems.

OP I dont know if you have found a solution.
If not I would recommend taking the top off the PS3, and having a fan blow directly on the PS3 solved my heat issue.
As mentioned if the Thermal Paste is worn out you are in semi YOLD with little chance of return.

Mine is the original 60GB fatty, I do hear the fan running at higher revs much too often, I'll be opening up the console over the weekend and running some compressed air through it to clear it all up. I had a one power supply go bust and I replaced with one from ebay about 3 yrs ago, its been fine since. But there is a lot of dust collection.

Another issues is that I used to have a 120gb HDD from 5 yrs ago I think, but since I have got the PS4's 500gb in it, I see the "cannot find appropriate storage device" error quite often, I believe it happens if the HDD can't make a consistent connection, first few times I cleaned up the SATA connectors, but I still get it once in a while, restarting the console fixes it.

It cannot be the laser...test your other game CD on your PS3...if they load quickly/normal then it CANNOT be the issue.

I have tested all my games BF4, GTA5 (Grand Theft) and GT5 and GT6. GT6... is the only CD that has the issues your regarding about. It is up to PD to create a patch to resolve this issue ASAP.

Cheers

If I may add...my friend took apart his PS3 slim... He found lots of melted/dust/grime that thickens onto the fans and everywhere else it can fit and makes the PS3 work harder due to the added weight from the dust etc. Lots of grime he said he cleaned up. He told me he cleaned it like new as he could now it works much better he saw improvement in sound of the system and fans not making as much noise.

Think of it as not getting an oil change for your car and you have 100k miles on it... Their will probably will be issues.

Just saying. Cheers

GT6 is one of the only dual layer disc games, if you have a weak lens, it'll have a harder time reading! I always recommend swapping the OEM Sony crap, I changed my lens a year after I got my Slim, - after the warranty expired. 1st gen slim 120gb.

Also, I hear "restoring databases" helps reduce overheating. Another tip for slim users is to put a small thick book underneath it! Don't block the outer rim on the bottom though (dust, laying flat, etc.), that's where it sucks air from, so keep it nice and open! TIP: Slims suck, fats blow, I have no idea about super slims.

Or just simply get the digital version of GT6 and save your lens from the strain

Oh god I'm getting worried people talking about their overheating fatty's, my fatty launch 60GB European model is running it absolutely find. The disc tray is a bit dodgy at the moment but I've never overheated with GT6 and I've played it for a few hours at a time. It's fans do run loud however.

What kills your ps3 was the constant grinding in gt5 with that ridiculous leveling system. leaving the console on for hours on end for B-spec events hopefully Adios to all that time wasting crap.

Now that you mentioned the "dual layer"

Ill look into it. I dont understand why GT6 is dual layered. Why not make it the same as GT5? Keep it working. I know it a different in it own way but cant be that much different...its for the PS3 not PS4. lol

I try to take a break whenever the fan becomes too loud.

I just leave it idle to cool down and let the SSD do the garbage collection.

Damn, I hope this doesn't keep causing problems.. I've had it crash twice so far, just today. I don't think it overheated, it was no where near as hot as it has been before. It's a 60gb launch that has never needed fixing. Been to Afghanistan twice with me too. Never cleaned for dust.. With a few thousand hours of GT5 on it also, never froze once in that game.

I'm gonna go ahead and blame GT6 and call it software issues.

last night my PS3 fatty (80GB) started showing me he red flashing light. GT5 & 6 was all i played and i only bought the thing in june last year (second hand but was like new) i just hope i can fix it or its goodbye console gaming

I used to play GT6 several days, from morning to night. 1 or 2 months before the PS3's ilness, PS3 had already shut off while I was playing GT5 to finish the license B-9. Then I tested on GT6 and GT6 was ok.

But, in April 17th, PS3 shut off from GT6 while I was doing some Tokyo R246 laps and since then, this problem came.

So, my PS3 is being fixed so I can play with it again. I hope that PS3 does not break it self again after it was fixed.

For people rocking the S1 PS3s, I'd be inclined to take them, while still in their working states, to a reputable service shop that can perform a reball. Reflow =/= Reball

EDIT Oh most of the posts I was looking at are over a year old, well ain't that something haha
