OK So I just got back from our X'mas holliday with my family. Before I left my house I was grinding B-Spec, Since I was just about to lv. Just before we left I remember turning off my PS3. I didn't realize it was still on it shows tht I just pressed the home button without shutting it completely. So I got home and went to my room hearing my PS3 fan was running soo loud thinking tht it would get the YLOD, But I was impressed it was still running. It's a bit hot but thn I turned it off for a few days to see if it will go back to normal and it did. It is running fine nothing wrong with it at all. I thought it will get the YLOD but it didn't. I was glad to see it running fine it's also the old fat PS3 60Gig. I had it for 2 n half years now. Never had a problem with it yet hopin never. Im really lucky to have one of the best PS3's.
 
My 4 year old 40gb fat PS3 has been on solid for well over 2 weeks running B spec enduros and it's fine so far.

You don't really have much choice once you get to the higher B spec levels as you need to run many multiples of the same enduro to level up (I think I'm on my 5th or 6th Tsukuba 9h race, and this one will finally get me to lvl 35 and unlock Le Mans).

I'm sure I've seen people claim they have never switched their PS3 off.
 
I left my PS2 on for 10 days once.. it still works fine. I would have no problem leaving my PS3 slim 120GB (upgraded to 500GB 7200 rpm two days ago) on for a week if I had to. Computers in general are made to be left on. The PS3 is basically just a computer. If it doesn't overheat in an hour, it probably won't overheat in a month being left on.
 
It's odd, I have no worries about leaving my desktop running for days on end, but I get all nervous if I leave my PS3 on too long. They're both basically made of the same stuff, plastic and chips and whatnot, so my concerns should be baseless.

I think it's the thought that I can't really repair my PS3 if it goes belly up though, wheras if a psu in my desktop burns out or something I can just hop out and have a new one in in a half hour.

Dream come true= non closed system console. Never gunna happen :(
 
Dang. I left mine on for most of an afternoon and it didn't like me. The next time it game me an HD error and I about popped myself. I don't know if I will do any of the longer endurance races. I don't have $300 for a new PS3 and i would like to keep my original 20GB going for as long as possible.
 
My 80GB have been on for +20 days now, it's gonna be on for a couple of weeks/months more. :)
 
I've got a launch 20GB (with a 500GB hard drive) and I keep it running 24/7. Mostly for remote play functionality and folding.
 
I've not had any problems leaving mine running for days on end, have done since I bought it 2 months ago. Not looking forward to summer though, this city will top 100' easily, I wonder how it will stack up to those temps!
(Anybody have an idea for a DIY cooling system. Not ambient AC?)
 
my ps3 have been on since the GT5 came out...
I just save my game file once every 2nd day or so to a USB device.
Nothing to worry about.

It's a 40gb fat ps3.

I do. First off I have an energizer dual port controller charger, that has 2 usb ports on the side. And through browsing I found a DIY mod to use a USB cord to power a computer fan. So I ran with the idea and purchased 2 80mm fans, and I had a 120mm fan from an old computer. I purchased a piece of 8x10 plexisglass from Lowes.

What I did was cut 3 holes in the plexiglass using a dremel tool cut off wheel. I cut the holes the exact size of the fans. I drilled holes in the glass for the fan mounting points, and used zip ties to secure the fans. I connect the power of all 3 fans together, as well as the ground. I then hooked them up to the USB cord and have it running from the controller charger.

I can post pics. Its not the prettiest, but hey it works
 
I font expect much of an impact on the power bill, my slim line only draws 72 watts during a b-spec race, so my fatty cant be more then 200 watts.
 
Back when I was Folding@Home, I had one ps3(60gig) folding 24/7 for close to a year an a half only every cutting it off if say the power went out or I moved some furniture. I had another ps3(40gig) to play on. The ps3(60gig) that was folding pretty much fried the harddrive to a crisp after 1 1/2 years :). It wouldn't restore or formatt the HD so I just put in a new one, fired it up and starting folding again for about 6 more months. This time I would only fold for about 8 hours at a time(enough to do one fold) intill I just stoped doing it anymore. I still have that ps3 and it works fine to this day, the other ps3 had the blu-ray drive fail the day BF2 came out so I bought a slim. No problems since :)

A ps3 can overheat and get a YLOD in 10 minutes. If however the PS3 is in good working order and the vents are not blocked it is no hotter after a week than it is after a couple of hours.

So yes it can fail after being on for a long period and yes it can overheat but when a problem is present it does not take long periods of time to have the same effect as it would have in a long period of time.

Also in general electronics are better left on as they will stablize the temp in a short period of time. Cooling, heating, cooling, heating is much worse than a steady tempature not to mention the sudden rush of energy each time the power is turned on. Expansion and contraction surges and such are biggies.

I have something very similar for my laptop which runs on USB. Pretty good to stop overheating on that, maybe it'll do the job on a PS. I'll have to build a new one.
 
I had a friend who left his PS3 straight for 3 days and he got the YLOD. The next day he went to youtube searched for some videos and fixed it. Thn tht fix only lasted for 2 weeks but thn after tht he had enough n just bought a new PS3 slim. I still dont recomend having ur PS3 on for more thn 24hrs. It will last longer if u use it properly.

my ps3 has been running for like 3 years straight basically apart from power outs and resets from updates etc lol. still going strong with the fatboy.

also got like 6 computers total in our house and all run pretty much 24/7 lol.

Meh mine is on 24/7 basically.. been like that ever since i bought it. Never had any problems with it.

me, too
it's been on (save power outages) for going on 3 years now.

it's actually far worse to turn it on and off and on and off.
the heating, cooling, heating, cooling causes the solder to expand and contract and eventually crack. leaving you with limited or no connection of circuit components (as i understand it).

so long as your PS3 has good breathing room (plenty of space in the intake and exhaust vents) and you keep the vents dust-free, your PS3 will be fine to run 24/7 at room temperature.

if it does overheat and you don't want to turn your thermostat down (some people are naturally colder than others. my ol' lady is one of those cold-blooded folk and it drives me nuts!), a small fan (desk fan or even a box fan at a few feet away) to blow cooler air into your PS3 will work fine.
just don't get suckered into buying one of those PS3 intercoolers (pictured here). everybody i've ever known that's had one has had their PS3 die on them. they're apparently nothing but trouble.
 
I've had 80gb fatty for 2&1/2 years and I leave it on for months at a time with no issues, I keep the vents clean and don't leave discs in it, also it never moves from its spot in the cabinet. I treat it like a pc and it has never had a problem.
 
PS3 reaches maximum operating temperature in about two hours. It does not matter how long you play after 2h, it does not overheat. Of course cooling system might be faulty because of dust or placing of the PS3. Of course PS3 can break of other reasons like poor electric quality.
