Right so my PS3 is making a strange noise and it has done it since it came out of the box. It happens once every so often and is hard to explain, it is kind of like a whuuuuuuuuur clunk kind of noise?

Now I'm reading all sorts on PS3 forums and no-one seems to have a definitive answer ... I'm happy to just leave it, I assume it is something the Slim does, it hasn't done it at all recently, but I haven't been playing as much so maybe it is just if the Slim is a bit hotter?

Anyone else know about this or had this?

I would but it hasn't happened since lol! It does happen randomly so unless I film the PS3 24/7 I think it is impossible to capture the noise

I think I know what you mean...my fatty does it occasionally...and I have had it for years so it will be fine if its what I think.

A cracking noise?
It happens sometimes shortly after opening the PS3 or after it's been shut off. The plastic is expanding or contracting as it heats or cools up. Nothing to worry it seems and it has always happened here.

I get that all the time too.

I get that noise with my PSP all the time. It usually happens when its loading so I am wondering if that would be when/why it is making that noise.

I hear this every day, approx. once or twice. Thank God it's not just mine! :grumpy:
I've made sure I've still got my receipt/box, etc., just in case I needto return it. Even if it doesn't go capput before the 12 months warranty, I'm still returning it after 11 months as it's bound to give me problems after 12 months and 1 day ! :ill:
I think it sounds like the hard drive arm moving and clicking but cannot know for sure. :nervous:

I've had the same noise since i bought my one in December last yr.
For me it sounds like the laser is moving to one side.

I agree, it is probably the laser on the blue ray drive moving about. Mine does it all the time, always has done.

My ps3 while running 24 hr endurance races, will sometimes make a clunk/loud vibration sound almost(purrr). I usually just associate the problem as maybe the inside is overly dusty, causing parts to overheat and make sounds. Has anyone taken apart their ps3 to clean it?

There is only three moving parts inside the PS3. That is the hard drive, blu-ray drive, and the fan. I bet that sound you hear is from the blu-ray drive, it's nothing to get stressed over about. It's most likely the sound of the led lens that read the data.

it could be the harddrive that´s making the sound too , but it´s totally normal

Mine did that, I turned it off as quickly as I could and left it off . Days later, I turn it on and says "correct hard drive software cannot be found" I turned off and turned it back on, then it worked, then loading became so slow. And then finally it basically says "everything is corrupted" and now I can't do anything with it.

I'm pretty sure it's the laser moving quickly to a different part of the disc. It is quite an alarming noise for sure but every PS3 I've played does it from time to time (I've never had one die on me either.)

Well I never had it with the first PS3 ... And then when I got the PS3 Slim, it made it quite a lot when I first started using it, but now as I have broken it in (so to speak) I very rarely get the noise ... I can't really explain the noise, it doesn't sound like a HDD noise, and it really doesn't sound like the fan so I think I agree with people about the blu ray laser, I assume it kind of sits idle for a bit because the game runs off of the HDD, and then when the game needs something off of the disc, then whur noise is the disc being thrown into action and the clunk noise is the laser shooting to a part of the disc to find the data it needs.

I'm only guessing but it sounds the only logic I can think off because the more of the game that has installed onto the HDD the less I hear the noise I initially mentioned.

this actually happens to me alot it like a click and it decends i can garuntee it is not the laser moving idk what it means but its been happening for over a year now so i dont think its anything to worry about
