PS3 System Backup Issue

I just did a PS3 backup on an external hard drive, I have a 60GB hard drive in the PS3 (the stock one).

I had 19GB out of 55GB free on the system so in theory 36GB should have been backed up but when the backup had completed it said only 28GB had been copied across.

Basically I want to know what it didn’t backup because according the numbers 9GB was not copied over. Im going to full format the PS3 so I need to know whats going to be lost.

All I have is about 18 demos, a few pictures and like 2 videos, GT5P and a few other games data & Home's cache. Is there hidden OS stuff that didnt need to be backed up?

The Os seems to take somewhere around 20gig for strange reason on my slim, the console might have reserved disk space for virtual memory like windows, all that needs to be backuped really is savegames and medias, cache comes from games, demos from psn, you won't lose anything don't worry,
 
I would've thought that the backup would've done some compression as well...

No point copying everything over byte for byte when the only thing that can read it is you - compress it down to save space.

Thanks for the replies, I now feel more reassured that there isnt some stuff its missed :). I guess the OS is stored in solid state memory and thats why it does not need backing up. Sony really should tell people this so they don't wonder why the numbers dont add up.

I do have another question, which is better to use to restore the system..

Using Restore from the XMB under system settings or...

Using the System Restore from the hidden recovery menu?

Or do they basically work the same?.... oh and quick or full format?

Do ps3's not have a big chip thing that the system boots up off?
I'v never backed up my ps3 but have copied my saved data onto memory card in my phone.
 
I know this is an old thread but I wanted to share my experience with PS3 hard drive backup. My PS3 has a 500GB hard drive, of which around 200GB is used. When I did the backup to external hard drive it compressed everything down to around 88GB. There is definitely some kind of compression going on.

The lesson I learned is that you can get away with a smaller hard drive than what's in your PS3.
