Sony officials has confirmed that the Playstation 3 will feature a Blu-Ray disc drive, providing content developers with more than 20gb of storage. This is naturally very beneficial for Blu-Ray against the competing standard HD-DVD, as Playstations are products of very high volumes. PS3 alone will guarantee a potential content market of millions of Blu-Ray enabled players.
Single-layer Blu-Ray discs can store up to 27Gb on one layer of data, compared to 4.7Gb on DVDs, although the version of the standard favoured by Sony holds only 23Gb - still around five times larger than existing DVD discs. The Blu-Ray specification also allows for reading existing DVD discs, so the PS3 will almost certainly still be able to handle standard DVD movies and PS2 titles.

this sounds interesting dont ya think??

BLUE RAY is going to be absolutely amazing!!!!.......Its like the equivalent to when the CD was invented! It will hold so much data and read / scan really quickly thus seeing games like GT5 propelled into super realism. Playstation always ensure that they have quite up to date technology on there consoles and inplementing Blue Ray will give them a huge amount of power to do alot more!!!

well if the specifications are to go bye then i think that x-box 2 is going to need something up its sleve if its going to compete with ps3, its just like what sony did to nintendo and sega with the move from cartridge to cd lol :)

Imagine GT5 on a dual layered BluRay disk with the PS3 which will have a power of around 20.0 ghz with 1 gig of ram, ooh the power of the cell....GT5 ROCKS!@!!!!!!@!!

I can't even IMAGINE how freaking unbeleivable it will be, I hear Sony is going all out with the PS3, they don't want ANYBODY coming CLOSE to their system. They rock! Then that combined with PD and KY's work ethic, and his obsession with perfection, we are all in for the treat of the century!!

I couldn't agree more. Also imagine what rockstar will do with the first GTA for PS3

I hope that that the decide to design the ps3 like they did the ps2, coz i liked the design of it it better not look like the xbox or i will be pi**ed , has anyone got the supossed specs of the ps3??? they would be most appreciated :)

Sony has better taste than Microsoft, I don't expect a massive black box to be the shell of the PS3. We'll get something that has some style.

wow, thats incredible.

how expensive (do you think) are blue-ray blanks? and i wonder how much ps3 games will cost <_<.

i hope ps3 murks the hell out of xbox, and i hope the ps3 disc reader doesnt become faulty like the ps and ps2's have.

I can imagine Blue-ray movies will have insane resolution, 1000 lines or more with that much data storage.

Sony spent ages deciding what the PS2 was going to look like.....It was the 'next generation' console and had to look the part for the new millenium.....they eventually decided to design the PS2 around the look of Tokyo skyscrapers.....they wanted the make those ridges run along upwards making it have a cool stance whist being reserved and tasteful. I think that the black thin rectangle looks really amazing.....I would love for the Ps3 to be similarily styled, not too out rageous......also they should keep the logo.....only changing the 2 to a 3, and have an LCD screen bar (like DVD players) It's gonna be really amazing becuse it will be another standard setting console.

...........Xbox looks like a N64 but uglyer and painted black! Its a bit too bulky and uninventive and also it was a huge let down to see the final product after people were tempted will the original chrome X concept machine (the one shown orignally that had 'powered by direct x written on it)......we ended up with a shiny black plastic square. Im not faulting the Xbox components but I do think it could have been packaged abit better.

Whatever it turns out to look like......it will be very powerful inside and judging by Sony's console sucess it will just be as good as ever!

yeh me too robin they should make it look a little like the ps2, maybe a cross between the ps2 and the psp (shiny black) and i hope the logo looks like this

ps3.jpg

I think that the PSP is hinting at the style that the PS3 is going to be in.....Obviously Sony (and me!) want to keep the style constant so that people can relate to the Playstation image. Aswell as the logo sprite has shown above....I want the brused aluminum ring from the PSP concept on the PS3.....it would look so cool to have somthing like that with the logo on the side of the PS3!!!

Imagine that ring with PS3 written in the middle......maybe it will even glow blue!! EEK!

I think the PS3 should have the same styling as the PS2 satin silver. I believe that although the PS2 carries teh black well, it would be better in a brighter (NOT luminous) casing.

I think silver or black, as you would want it to go with whatever colour TV, DVD ect you have. Well I know I would want it blend in and keep the place nice. Oh and is there a link to any of this info on the P2?

the ps3 logo will be like the ps2.

it has been filed at the US patent office already.

not really Omnis, sony will patent it so that nobody els can use it for commercial use, but that dosnt mean they will use the logo for their own purposess, but i think they will probably use it :) , I hope so anyway and try and keep some coherence between PS2 and PS3.

I have a feeling that the PS3 will look very similar to the PS2 because it's a good marketing strategy. People like things that are familiar to them, so when the PS3 comes out and people have to abandon their trusty PS2s, a similar look will play very well in the minds of consumers.

As for the price of the PS3, I couldn't picture it being more than $500 Canadian (or, about $400 American). The price can't be much higher than that, otherwise lower priced consoles will eat the PS3 alive, since nobody will be willing to pay the money.

I don't think so because it felt like it was so breakable, I mean the x-box was strong, it felt powerful. And it was, it heightened the length of my dining room table. I had my friends come over with their x boxes and my mom served lunch on that table, four x boxes supporting the table...ps2 could never do that.

On a more serious note...change is better. I wouldn't mind sony going with a smoothe silky aluminum or stainless steel case, it would cost more yes, but you sure as hell wouldn't break it!

In regards to the patent. Many companies patent many logos, only on the ground they want no-one else to use them (most famous probably warner Bros and the multiple Harry Potter patents)

I think the logo will change. The PSone and PS1 tied intogether. Just as I believe the PS2 and PSP will. I think the PS3 will have a whole new logo angle.

On those photo's of the PSP you can see what Sony will eventually do with the dual shock. The PS3 is likely to have a new controller (ds3!) and I think that they will use a similar styling to the psp's buttons. The silver symbols suspended below the glass effect button.......it will look really classy!.....it may even light up.....imagine the glowing symbols!!!!

Basically when you look at the PSP your seeing the new Dual Shock 3!

psp looks cooler than any other handheld ive seen, but it looks bulky. And most playstation equipment is fragile. So if you drop it it'll probaly break. Not gameboys, bash those around for hours

Looks and sounds like a new evolution in computer gaming. But is that a suprise for us lucky people who own PS2 consoles, games and Sony products? :)

This information has been out for about a year, maybe longer. But, Sony never really confirmed it, until now. Here is the article I read about a week ago.

Oh, here is a cool link to click on to see what the discs look like.

Aug 4, 2004 - PlayStation 3 to Feature Blu-ray Disc Technology

Sony has finally confirmed that they will use Blu-ray Disc technology in their next-generation PlayStation 3 (PS3) video game console. What is more surprising is that they also have plans to equip an upcoming version of their PlayStation 2 (PSX) video game console with a Blu-ray Disc player, so that consumers can enjoy both video games and high-definition movies. Sony hopes that the move will help jump-start the market for the new storage format. The announcement came at a press conference held by the Blu-ray Disc Founders (BDF), who also announced that they are in the process of finalizing the read-only version of the Blu-ray Disc format (BD-ROM) which they expect to be finished by September 30, 2004.

Just think, a PS2 that can play HD movies. Awesome! I will get one when it's available. But, if it wll be in that PSX contraption only, I wont bother.

Although i like the prospect of the Blu-Ray technology beign utilized in the upcoming Playstation 3 and the last generation of the Playstation 2,it will end up affecting the price of the Playstation 3 console greatly seeing as the Blu-Ray technology is very expensive.I am guessing around $200 extra for the Blu-Ray drive.

Why would we know what the memory card looks like when we don't even know what the PS3 looks like? I would imagine it would be similar to the PS2 just like the PS2 was similar to the PSX memory cards.

No chance of if being that much more expensive than PS2 was at launch. In two years time (or whenever PS3 is released), Blu-Ray discs will cost as much as DVDs do right now. It's the same with all technology.
