PS3 won't turn on.

While playing GT5p my PS3 shutdown by itself. Tried to turn it back on and it shutsdown right after light turns green and red light starts blinking. I can't even eject my game disc. Also tried power switch to reboot same results.

What is up with that?

Sounds like the YLOD! Yellow light of Death. You can send it to Sony for repair about $150 or repair it yourself. Here is a video is this what is happening to yours? Also is it a 60gb "launch" PS3 or which do you have?

I have repaired my 60gb "Launch" PS3 4 times already, I did the reflow technique as outlined in the video.

Thanks for the video tip. I think I'll take it to a buddy of mine to fix. I'm not too confident with my electronic skills.:scared::nervous:

It's not difficult, just take your time. Be carefull with the Ribbon Cables and the connectors they attach to they break easily. Particularly the cable from the Blu-ray player. Get some good thermal grease (attributes to the YLOD due to cooling issues). I use a silver compound from Radio Shack ~$10 US.
 
Do you not have any consumer rights in the US? In the EU any goods is effectively guaranteed by law for 5 years for mechanical failure. Though I'd imagine state-side that varies from state to state, doesn't it?

There was an article going around about this issue particularly about the YLOD on 60gb models in Europe. we do have consumer right in the U.S. but I don't think they pushed the issue. The 60gb model has many features that the newer 40gb and up PS3's do not like SACD, extra USB ports, and card readers for starters. Many people would rather do the repair than chance sending in their "launch" PS3 and chance losing it.
 
This just happened to me yesterday. Freaking overheat failsafe. It's not YLOD, but it might as well be.
 
Probably nothing to do with the above problems but while playing a particularly lengthy session of Burnout Paradise, my PS3 froze and a message saying 'Error reading disc' came up. Did a soft reset and found that anything blu-ray did not want to work(ie my PS3 games and BR movies). However, normal DVDs, PS2/PS1(the 60gb version is backwards compatible) games and CDs worked fine. Has anybody else had this happen to them? Im assuming that because there was no install with Burnout Paradis that the gameworld is streamed from the disc as you play, and i can imagine that it would take quite a toll on the BR drive. That's why i think all sandbox/open world games should have some sort of install as standard. It may take up precious HDD space, but what would you rather have? You can upgrade the HDD after all.
 
That sounds about the same as every other PS3 Blu-Ray failure I've heard of. How long have you had it and where did you buy it from?
 
This happened to me over the weekend with my launch 60gb (which has been repaired by sony once before) and i lost my oceans 13 bluray disc..

I since traded it in with a wii i never use + old games and Wii games and got enough credit from that to get a free 120gb slim ps3. Could of tried to fix it maybe but im lacking tools and knowledge... So hopefully the slim holds up more!! Though i use my ps3 a lot as its a dvd / bluray + songs and movie playback from external HD as well as a gaming machine... Id turn it on multiple times a day, ever day since i bought it.

This happened to my 2.4 year old 60g it's the blue ray drive that dies.
You can get the part number off it and buy one off ebay and follow the video on youtube of how to replace it. Or ring sony as I did and have a very dull conversation informing you it will cost about £140 and you'll probably end up with a refurbished unit.
I copied my data then formated the whole thing, Then traded it in and brought a slim with loads of extended warranty. I didn't see the point in sticking with a 60g and having to erase some game data every time I brought a new game + os is useless now the new update has arrived. I know it has 2 more usb's and card slots but you can by a card reader.


I agree with a Trico Pro 1st post sound like electrical failure.

Open world games with no install do take their toll on drives because the game doesnt know where or what you are going to do next and as a result it has to search all over the disk every second to load the assets. A level based game might be able to load everything in to the hard drives cache and not use the drive at all.

My drive wouldnt read any disks whatsoever and after using the recovery console I was able to get back PS2 playback, then I lost it again. I then tried a full reformat and I got back CD playback and nothing else then also lost it.

As a result I believe its poorly coded firmware that caused this. Most people who have replaced lasers have had the problems come back within a matter of weeks.

Shows that a Sony repair really didnt do all that much! More than one repair is really too many in my opinion, and the price they charge to get somebody elses second hand console is rediculous.
