If my 60 gig ps3 got the YLOD but the problem in the ps3 didnt effect the hard drive, could I buy a new 60 gig fat off of ebay and exchange hard drives and still keep my saves?:indiff:

If it hasn't gone yet, get an external hard drive and use the back up feature. I got YLOD'd on the very first night GT5 was out, so I didn't lose much progress...

But yeah, if you back it up through the PS3's function you can copy that back up back over to a new PS3 should yours eat itself.

The problem is that the PS3's hard drive is formatted to only work with that particular PS3 and no other, so no other PS3 will recognise the drive. My slim also didn't offer to format my 320gb drive, though.

I have YLOD... =(

I tried putting my drive into my housemates ps3 and it asked me to format the disk.

It is an anti-piracy measure by Sony that screws the majority because of the minority.

The only way to 'move' data from one PS3 to another is by either backing up and restoring the back up on a new PS3 or using the Data Transfer Utility. But this requires the destination drive to be freshly formatted also, so you cant just transfer the odd file to an already set up PS3.
One glaring omission is that you need the original HD PS3 to still be in working order... you cant take the working HD out of a broken PS3 and transfer data in another PS3. WHY?!!!!!!!

Sony should offer a service/option to let us use a perfectly working HDD in another PS3.

This, a thousand times this!

Is it me or a few more than the average number of PS3's dying after playing GT5?

I know 2 others personally, as well as a fair few here on GTP and other forums reporting issues.

Hoping I can juice my PS3 long enough to install the Copy Protection Update removal that may be incoming soon. =/

Question, the unfortunate getting the YLOD, was it on the old fat ps3 or was it the newer slim ps3? I'm so paranoid of getting the YLOD that I cant even really fully enjoy the game. Im using the slimmer ps3 btw. Ironically because my old fat ps3 got YLOD almost a year ago now.

I thought you can't do this to backup GT5???

Mine was on a launch model 60gb fat, I think the PSU blew, but it was 4 years old.

I'm pretty sure you can't copy the save onto a USB stick, but you can back up the entire system to copy otherwise protected files. Actually I could be wrong as I've never done it, but I'm fairly certain the back up feature will copy everything regardless of whether or not it's protected, because at the end of the day it still can't be copied to a different PS3 - If you copy that back up to another PS3, everything else will be wiped.

Mine was a 40gb Phat with a bigger drive installed (hence why I want to keep all the stuff thats on it!)

My other 2 mates were an original day 1 phat, and another '2nd gen' phat like mine. So 3 phats bite the dust after playing GT5...

My housemate has a slim and although it gets really hot it has a better GPU cooling design, so in theory they should be better designed to cope with the high graphics demand that GT5 puts the PS3 through.

my PS3 died while playing GT5, had it since Launch in 07 and GT5 killed it, now i have a slim :grumpy:

I'm self employed so can't afford a slim unless I get lucky... I waited years for this game and get to play it for 9 days before it zaps the life out of my poor PS3!

:(

GT5 didnt kill your PS3 and they launched in 06

This. There's always a sudden flare-up of YLOD cases with every major release on the PS3, it's not because these games are especially taxing on the system, it's because more people buy them, so more people will experience a YLOD while playing them, simple as that. Mine was no doubt due to age, it's just what happens. I did, however, avoid using my brother's 40gb fat while waiting for my Slim, just in case it did kill it, even though it's half the age my PS3 was.
