I doubt you are going to find a quote which has someone from Sony saying exactly the confirmation or denial you want to hear. They always spin things to be vague on purpose, when kaz says 'Playstation 3 for 10 years' and 'new console after the Playstation 3' thats how I get the 10 years then a new console. Its written right there in that quote!

The way I see it as I see it every other quote is that nothing will happen until after the 10 years of the PS3. Even Jack Tretton is saying "10 years and beyond, we are in it for the long run"... who says that if they really intend to have a new console in 6 years! Every quote says it but just not in the specific words you want.

^Its more reliable than thin air! saying 'new console in 2011' is indeed that picture ;)

...and no Kaz in not ever going to say "Yes the PS3 is totally 100% going to be running its 10 year lifecycle without another overlapping console I swear on my life etc etc.."

Firstly with times being the way they are Sony is not going to invest in the development of an entirely new console. They struggled with the PS3's development and that was when times were good. Putting money into a games console is far more risky than investing the money in less volatile consumer electronics such as camera and audio player development.
In general early pre-development stages of the next console have likely been underway since the PS3 launched. That is usually how new tech works, and is also why all consoles go through multiple names, and designs along the way.

Secondly, much more time, money and effort has gone into the PS3 than the PS2, just the technology and complexity of the new systems hardware speaks for itself. Therefore it should easily outlast the PS2's 6 years on its own because it was intented to be alot more future proof.
If Sony did not have to compete I would agree, but it must compete with other consoles. If there is a new Xbox and no new PS until 2016 how well do you think the PS3 will do, especially as the GPU in the new Xbox will be much better and it will contain much more RAM. While the Cell is still comparable to current chips the rest of the Xbox will be better and it will show. Sony is not competing with themselves, they are competing with Microsoft.

Thirdly Sony have said that they intend the PS3 to last atleast 10 years (2016) on its own and they have also said that it might be their last console (but that it less set in stone). Whatever it is the last thing on Sony's mind is making a new console. Times are hard and might be hard for a while and even if things are great again by 2011 both companies and consumers will want thier products to last as long as possible before they have to introduce / purchase something new.

The PS1 and PS2 lasted ten years, but did not go ten years by themselves. I haven't heard that the PS3 may be their last console so I cannot comment on that.

Yes, times are hard which is why Microsoft says they intend to hold off on the next gen, and if the big 3 can agree on that then it will be fine, but the moment one of them jumps the other two will almost have to.

So, do you think the competition will go until 2016 with nothing else on the market? Do you think the PS3 could survive the "Next Gen" ad campaigns the competition would deliver?

And Sony's past history on how they have handled the PlayStation brand is what we are all basing that on. The PS3 can last ten years, but cannot stay competitive. The PS1 and PS2 both lasted ten years, but did not go that long without the next console on the market.

The 2011 date was given on an in case Microsoft jumps basis, not any kind of planned date. Sony, likely does not want to put out a console in 2011 for all the same reasons you list. All this has said is that if it is necessary in order to remain competitive they want to be able to do that. If Microsoft doesn't do anything then Sony likely won't do anything either.

Whether we see a PS4 in 2011 will entirely depend on what Microsoft do - they're the direct competitor for the Playstation. There is no way Sony will want to allow Microsoft another year headstart with the next generation of consoles... we can see what a dent Microsoft has made with regards to market share due to their one year headstart.

Totally agree with the above Obli
