PS4 should it be simple or complicated ?.

I think the PS4 should be a small chip that Sony personally plants in your brain so that you can play or watch whenever you want out of your own eyes.

Why the heck spare on RAM when its dirt cheap nowadays? Besides, it was the biggest complaint of game devs. So give them ram to spare.

There are also those in the world who have a connection of 120Mbit/s Down and 10Mbit/s up with no limit per month what so ever. Plus the speed will be doubled next year I believe. So I think some parts of the world are falling behind a lot with limits and speeds. Maybe this will be a good incentive for the providers with those old fashioned rules to broaden their views a bit. ;)

You want to tell that to AT&T? The most I can get here is 3mbit per second. They're not upgrading their network in my area because it would "broaden their views". It's because it's in the inner city with more than one housing project, and they're afraid it won't be profitable. And that's with a MAJOR university (Yale) in town.

All I could care for is BC(back to PS1 would be a plus but back to PS3 or PS2 would be nice), Blu-ray, and decently up to date graphics. As far as BC is concerned, some 80GB FAT PS3 models had software PS2 emulation that supported most games. Specific 80 FAT PS3's and the 60GB FAT PS3's had the PS2 CPU and GPU chip in the same motherboard with the PS3 CPU and the PS3 GPU. Later on Sony sent out updates to the software emulated PS2 engine 80GB PS3's so most of the issues with BC were fixed according to what I read.

Wow, that's a crappy company. I live in a major university town too... nationally speaking (dunno about world wide coverage lol), Groningen. So it's the University of Groningen. Although the university isn't well known it produced some nice people. Including professors now teaching at Oxford. But also produced figures like Pim Fortuyn, Wubbo Ockels, Wim Duissenberg (former head of the ECB) and also Peter Hofstee who is an engineer on the Cell processor used in the PS3 if I'm correct.
Anyhow, I reckon that because the Netherlands is smaller and the cables can be more easily dug underground, it's cheaper to install and maintain the hardware for a decent network allowing such speeds as I can enjoy. And we have everything underground except long distance power lines.

To get back on topic... I think that the PS4 should have at least some touch screen compatibility and maybe even be compatible with holographic projectors. Although the latter is just wishful thinking. Ooooh how I'd like to have a Holo deck like in Star Trek. You'd find me on the track every day. ^_^

All I want is a cheap console with gaming and multimedia aspects 👍. #1 requirement of them all... DX11-DX12 computing power 👍👍👍. That is a must.

I believe that Sony should take a good look at Apple. It should be a multimedia machine, wrapped up in a simple form.

Apple has shown us that simplicity sells.

Exactly right mate 👍

I agree with backwards compatiability, it's annoying having two consoles when one could do the job.

Trojan Horse? Are you familiar with the story of the Trojan Horse? The Greeks concealed themselves inside the horse, and it was brought into the city of Troy, because they thought it was a "gift from the Gods". While the city slept, the Greeks emerged from the horse and took the city. At what point was Blu Ray "concealed" in the PS3? I never once said "Oh my god! There's a Blu Ray player in this thing? I never knew that! How dare they!!". You knew there was a Blu Ray player in it. Sony never once concealed that fact from anyone. What they did was use the PS3 as a SPRINGBOARD for Blu Ray. There's a world of difference. This whole thing about the PS3 being a Trojan Horse is yet another false perception that's been perpetuated and reinforced by gamers.

I don't think you understood what I was trying to say. I feel the PS3 was a trojan horse in terms of the perception of what the device was, not the fact people physically didn't know it had a BD drive!.

The 'Playstation' bit was just there to get the thing into peoples homes meanwhile subliminally flooding the consumer market with Blu Ray players to win the format war. Basically a fancy Blu Ray player disguised as a games console.

The PS Vita is first new Playstation system without Ken Kutaragi. Ken was much like what Kaz for PD is now. His shallow visions hurt the products design. Ken was like "Here is the system, now figure it out and make something" He tried that with PSP and failed when developers demanded more ram. Ken skimps on ram with every system he has had a hand in, thinking what he wants is good enough for the world. Enter the PS Vita, a system essentially designed by the developers. Not entirely but Sony asked them what they wanted the system to have. The back touch panel was a developers idea, The 640MB of ram is more than the PS3. The UI has tons of features not even possible on PS3 due to its poor memory hog core OS design. And going back to the home screen is instant, no loading icons every time.

If PS4 can do this type of home screen transition this fast its going to be less painful to press the PS button.

Is it sure it has 640MB of memory?

I think I'd like a new revamped model of the controller with the new PS4, whenever that comes out. Can't think of how exactly they can improve gaming. I'm guessing 3D gaming is the next step. Bummer for me cause I wear eyeglasses.

Digital distribution is still long way. Most pepole like to buy physical copy, digital download may be as a option though.

No that guy is very important and they have already stated they will take suggestion from developers for next gen console.

This why I think the next PS will be the best one ever for that reason. They learned with the PS3 and PSP that developer input is more important.

512 system/128video. Its been revealed for months now and its on the official website.

PS4 will simply be a beefed up PS3. Sony took a hit financially with the development of the ps3 to future proof the console. The Cell system is miles ahead technically then anything that the likes of Intel or AMD could throw at it. The PS3 system itself is only let down by ram and the graphics card, otherwise it would make the Xbox 360 graphics looked quite limited, but in doing so would have increased costs by a large margin.

People though asking for just a games consoles need look elsewhere. Sony and Microsoft are trying to make their consoles the hub of the online world for families. The media center project is exactly what they're aiming for. It's a pity the PS3 web browser is so rubbish, otherwise I'd set up a wireless keyboard and use it alot more.

What happened to Sony looking at getting Google onboard?

Which is obviously why IBM called it quits and abandoned it over two years ago, stating that they won't develop it any further because it was a technological dead end that has since been greatly eclipsed by hardware designs that are cheaper, easier to program for and more powerful (namely, POWER7; which incorporates some ideas from CELL but isn't remotely the same processor).

No way in hell the PS4 will be CELL-based unless Sony throws it in for BC purposes.

They need to align it's hardware more with PCs, the current market shows xbox is favoured because of this, the trend is that more multi-platform games are being made for Pc/xbox and then ported to the PS3, not the other way. It makes business sense, and that's why they must adjust with their next console.
As long as they do this, yet keep it's hardware different (and superior) to the xbox then all is peachy.

Excatly. People have bandwidth limits, and games can be 10gb... Which is my (current) limit per month. What's more, where I live it'd be quicker to drive to the shops, buy the game, and come home than to download it...

If somebody has such weak deal with their ISP, they should switch something more reasonable. Here in Finland we only have data limits on some of 3g wireless operators but none on cable, DSL, or optical connections. We are not forerunners in Europe on this and countries like Sweden and Estonia have even better connection options for the same money.

Backwards Compatibility? Yes
More RAM? Yes
More HDD Space? Irrelevant
Proprietary HDD? No
Blu Ray? Yes
Better GPU? Yes
Better CPU? They still haven't maxed out Cell. Only Uncharted 3 has been getting closer to unleashing Cell's full potential.

Understand that not all countries treat internet in the same fashion. In Australia, plans without data limits are extremely rare.

I'm guessing you are aware that the CELL system had 3 different branches of development routes primarily so Toshiba and Sony could go one way while IBM went in other directions.

IBM didn't discontinue complete development of the CELL engine. It will be enhanced and integrated into new designs as you've partly alluded to. Thats not to say that the PS4 won't primarily encompass this hardware giving that they have the capacity to develop the architecture to their needs.

The problem is, is that PC hardware 'not including gpu's' is based on different architecture. Direct x is there to provide software on the PC so that games can utilize the hardware. Looking at the cell engine, part of the reason the Uncharted's look so good is because sony's system is optimised for multimedia even with the limited ram availability compared to the power needed for equivalent graphics from a pc. In reverse, the same hardware for the ps3 probably isn't as good as PC hardware for other tasks.

For me it seems developers are starting to really get on top of the ps3 and utilize its capabilities. L.A. Noire was a good example of what the ps3 has to offer in terms of porting instead of doing it the other way around. I expect the architecture of the next batch of consoles to be similar though.

Personally i think Sony should make the PS4 stream films and download music. Also games should just be memory chips.

Why dig up this thread? Why not post this in the PS4/Orbis discussion thread?
