What is the best method for switching to an SSD if I currently run GT Sport off of the CD/Physical disk? Do I need to buy the digital version if I want to stop playing off the CD?

If you want to stop playing off the disc then yeah digital is what you need to get. Fortunately its dirt cheap these days.

Then you just slot an SSD in there and put the firmware on from Playstations website and you're done.

I haven't had a physical game for over 8 years now I think, buy everything out of the US digital store (because it was always cheaper) and then digital just means I can always get all my games back instead of lugging them around with me when i move.

4 years old, actually. PS4 released on November 2013, and GT Sport was only released on October 2017.

Probably he thought GT Sport was released in 2016, 3 years ago. I initially thought of the same thing way back then, too.
