I just read on lik-sang that Sony announced that the PSP is completely region free. It comes with a power adapter that is switchable to 110/220 voltages and everything, so you can really use it anywhere out of the box and you can play any games produced for it in any region. :| Cool!

It's on release for 12 december in Japan for about $200-$230. I decided to preorder it - I'm sure I could sell it again easily enough for a profit if I don't want to keep it or need cash. :D

I'd get one, but then i'd just end up mostly playing it at home which seems a bit pointless.

Unless that mobile GT4 game is awesome.

Sounds like the ultimate portable toy this Christmas. Please don't tell me Nintendo has lost it's crown on the portable market aswell. What's happened to them? They seemed like gods that couldn't be touched and now look at them. What a shame.

nintendo DS should NOT be looked down upon.

i think the better way to look at it is as the dynamic duo, rather than the fierce rivals.

As in graphics or gameplay? Or both?

I'd say the graphics couldn't be immaculate for it's size. But I could be underestimating it.

The DS will turn heads, but Nintendo have immensley gone down hill since the release of the N64. I just hope they have revised their formula and have made games for all ages, not just kids.

if you honestly think the gameboy/ds market wont hold up against the psp you got issues

they have eliminated many competition before and the DS is simply an additional item not a seqeul to the game boy

on top of that.... the majority of people that would play portable games are of the younger generation so Pokemon isnt exactly a bad idea!!!

not too many gt players are gonna sit on gt portable all day long, obviously posting this on a gt forum is a little bit biased!

I view Nintendo as producing more children-minded video games while Sony and Microsoft make few games for children and more toward the teen and adult videogamers.

Will the PSP be able to play movies? Or will it just be a portable game specific device?

their'll always be a market for young kids, not all parents want their kids playing GTA and Halo, and not many kids are going to like GT3 over lets say Mario Kart.

If their target audience is the younger generation their doing it well :)

i got all 3 systems, and they all have their benefits

The DS won't really bring anything new to the portable market. Has Nintendo done anything revolutionary with the GBA/Sp? My answer is no, all they have done is re-release old Nintendo classics. Not a bad thing many will say, but is it fresh and exciting for todays demanding, modern gamers?

No it can play DVD movie thingys just like PS2, although i think battery time gets chewed up faster while doing so?

claf-43
and what has psp done that is revolutionary????

gt mobile? big deal

The ability to play PS2 style games and DVD's while on the move. No that doesn't sound revolutionary at all does it? Nintendo will probably follow the same route as usual and develop cute, childish games. Where's the revolution with that?

I've seen a fair number of PSP game clips and it does look very, very good. IGN Ridge Racer PSP
Essentially the PSP is a PS2 (in terms of power) but handheld. IGN PSP FAQ
As far as I can tell the PSP can play films. However the UMD has a capacity of 1.8GB. I wonder if it is big enough to store the data of DVD quality films?
Anyway, it looks good and I'd get one on import if I had the money.... :grumpy:

Movies won't necessarily be region-free, but all games will be.

I'm thinking about pre-ordering, and play-asia is sold out, and eBay is inflated, and lik-sang doesn't have a list price. How is Lik-Sang with import prices? I don't want to pre-order and get hit with a $350 unit...And are there any other good import retailers that I can get at online?

You ARE unerestimating it. After reading lots of info on the PSP tonight, i read that the PSP actually has the same processing power of the PS2. Now, the games will only be run in 480x(something, not 640), but just seeing early screenshots from the NFSU game that is coming out, it's looking REALLY good. Also, judging by the specs, it's going to be over 10 times as powerful as the nintendo DS. Whilst the DS can only process around 120,000 triangles per second, the PSP can do a whopping 33 Mtriangles (i belive thats 33 mil) per second! Also, while the DS only has 260,000 color capability, the PSP has 16.77 million colors..

The PSP is something to be feared by Nintendo. I was fascinated with the DS until i read more about the PSP.. Now i'm not going to bother with the DS, even though it is a bit cool.

The Gameboy ran the portable market ever since there was one. But all good things have to come to an end. Sony took over the games market from Nintendo 10 years ago and now they're taking the portable scene aswell. Nintendo must revolutionise their thinking or the N5 and DS will be failures, which could spell the end fo the gaming giant.
