Earlier this month rumors began circulating about the possibility of Sony showing off a brand new PSP at this year's E3 -- not just a new iteration of the existing series, but a brand new device – the fabled PSP 2. Reports today, however, suggest that the new handheld will not be making its debut at the show, but maintain that it is real, and will arrive later this year.

VG247 reported today that Sony's long-rumored successor to the PSP is unlikely to be shown at E3, and is expected to debut at Tokyo Game Show or GamesCom later this year. The site went on to detail the purported features of the new device; specifically that it will feature two cameras, a touch-screen display, and will feature a four-core Cell processor. While we have heard chatter about camera integration and touch-screen controls in the past, the four-core processors is a fairly new addition to the rumor mill. The inclusion of a powerful four-core processing system would be a large boost over current iterations, and to it put into perspective, is about half the power of the PS3, which runs on an eight-core variation.

Speaking in regards to reports today, IGN's own sources have provided similar information regarding the PSP 2, saying that it is, in fact, real and that an E3 reveal is possible, but unlikely due to the system's current stage of development and the competition posed by Nintendo's 3DS. We've also learned that the PSP 2 may incorporate dual analog sticks as well, a feature many fans have been clamoring for since the system originally launched in 2005.

For all the latest on the PSP 2, stay tuned to IGN.com.

NICE

The 4 core, touchscreen and the dual sticks are rather interesting, but it is a bit of a damper to me, 'cause a year ago i bought a Go!

Designs i would welcome:

 Oh yeah.

My respond is; with all the fancy new features listed on the article, two probabilities may happen:

1. All these features will be on the final version of PSP2 when it'll released, and people went crazy when they saw the price.
2. Some features will be on the final version of PSP2 when it'll released, and Sony still brought the price point higher than it supposed to be. (And this one is the most obvious.)

Give the link to the article please. Just want to read about it from the original source.

EDIT: IGN.com is too big to load in my browser. I really need the link...:P

Here is the original + eurogamer article

Gotta love those comments from all the fanboys

The price tag is getting huge (300-400 dollars?). But it's a quad core, so byebyee ipad and iphone4g!!
dual stick.
It's between the ps2 and ps3 (half of the ps3) and ; if it comes with a new chip form nvidia with tesselation this would wow the gaming world (as did the psp and it's price tag)

Finally a new handheld.... PSP is getting or IS outdated by now.... its about time they think of a new handheld... maybe incorporate some special features to make it run well with a PS3 as well... :)

Is it fueled by crushed unicorn horns?

Sorry, we hear this every year just before E3 and now the rumors conveniently say it won't be at E3, but later, when we forget about the rumors.

The only time one of these rumors was correct was when they predicted a new design for the current PSP.

You could be right Foolkiller...
a new psp one year after the go came out. That's like confirming that the go was a shot in the knee( kind of did, but ok) . BTW i have a go, and i like it, but i can understand a lot of people wanting the old ones (batterie, better button layout...) if it's not for the CW, but i really hope they just do digital distribution with the Psp2.

Homebrew (pirated games) killed the psp and surly was the main and sole reason why the go got beaten up.

If they bring out now a psp2 all the few pspgo buyer would fell like ven more ripped off (à la apple : old tech, nice design ;))
i would.

The further issue a PSP2 will create is in storage. PSP Phats used Memory Stick Pro Duo cards and the PSP Go uses the smaller version. If the PSP2 has any backward compatibility with the PSP then someone is getting screwed.

the first and second designs look really awkward to hold. but, i like the third design that copy's the design of sell phones. if it has a touch screen with a key board then i would happy with as i used my psp for more than just games. but, if it pure digital like the go, i will be passing on it.

but, they really do need to support this one better instead of just promising that there will be a GT game some where down the road. but, with two thumb sticks FPS will be more possible without the need for using the face buttons to aim or relying on an auto aim set up.

Loving this concept idea. Well I just have to wait till Sony announces the "PSP2" device this year or next year.

It's still the most powerful handheld systen on the market, and, I think it's the most powerful handheld ever.

If they create something that I could honestly consider replacing my itouch with (not only for games but with applications and terrific internet surfing capabilities) then they might have a winner. Otherwise I could careless and regret buying my original PSP

I didnt buy a PSPgo because i own the original black one. The thing that put me off it was that it was download-only gaming, no UMDs. I hope with the next one, Sony sort out two things:

1)Proper analogue sticks like the dualshock 3 controller(only a tad smaller)
2)Make it with both UMD support AND huge memory capacity so you could transfer all your UMD games onto it, and download games from PSN. How cool would that be?

Unless they make the thing a good amount thicker there won't be DS3 style analog sticks.

Even if you are able to put all your games onto a memory stick you will still have to have the UMD inside the console to play it.
