Qualifying or lack thereof

Unfortunately, so far there is no sign of quali in GT5. Instead, you start mid-pack in Aspec and Bspec with the same grid for every race in your championship. Whether it was the practice session and then a 1-lap quali of GT1 or the Qualifying session 'for as long as you want' of GT3, past GT games have had qualifying as an option at the very least. Even though GT4 slightly went away from this direction, it still had quali for championships. With the much larger grids of GT5, qualifying would have been much more important and interesting than previous games. I am not happy with this. 👎

Also, the points system could have been divided by 5 so we could be dealing with smaller numbers. The current system is 100-75-60-50-40-30-20-15-10-5, but in my opinion, a smaller system of 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 would have have been more adequate.

Indeed, its a shame, and its unfortunate that because of this you start every event in the middle of the pack :grumpy:

At least give us the option to quali. Some races I don't care where I start but as things start getting tougher and your trying to stretch your car out a bit more it become vital to have a decent grid position.

I am shocked it was left out.

Yeah it´s one of the very few complaints I have about the game. It shouldn´t be hard to implement a qualifying option for races :indiff:

Qualifying in GT4 was called "Practice" and was only available in championship races. Have you looked for something similar in GT5?

There is no "practice" or "qualifying" in championships, well, at least in the ones I have raced so far.

I'm not far into the game at the moment, I don't have more than a few hours a week in which I get to play. I know it gets tougher but...

While I appreciate that qualifying is a vital part of motor racing, I don't miss it in GT5. Starting at the front of the grid would only make one of GT's worst aspects even MORE acute; namely, the competitors aren't fast enough anyway! Typically you start a race in 8th, and after 3 good / lucky corners without collisions you're in the lead and then there's 4 1/2 lonley laps. And I don't mean when you've got a car that's 250bhp more powerful then the competition, either. Often I kinda wait around for 4 laps just to have some company, somethign to look at, then take off for the last.

I love GT, played 'em all, been waiting for years for GT5 and now I have it I love it, but the thing that annoys me the most and always has is the speed of the competitors in all but a few stages of the game. COME ON CPU CARS, IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE A RACE FFS!! The A.I. cars crawl, even at the top levels some corners are taken at only about 70% of the possible racing speed, and I don't understand why. This is why you suddenly crash into the back of them all on a circuit that you know well - thye're practically stationary!

Just pick a slower car. Some of my best moments in GT have been beating faster cars with slow ones, and it all starts in qualifying. Qualifying is just as important to racing as pit stops. This game is a sim, not an arcade racer, it should have qualifying.

im not too far yet (25%) none of the races/championships i done so far offered me qualifying, maybe deeper into the game?

Qualifying is part Racing, always been, there is no point not offering the option to do so.

I was really hoping qualifying and better AI would appear later in the game. Being a sim is about more than just physics, it's about simulating the experience of racing. The best racing comes from closely matched cars and closely matched drivers.

The way the menus are set up tells you about how the game is designed to be played. The lack of practice and qualifying options from the race screen tells us you're meant to just jump straight in to the race. If you're expected to win from mid-pack in a 3-lap race in an unfamiliar car on an unfamiliar track either the AI need to be rubbish or you need to have a much faster car. That's not a sim, that's an arcade game.

The lack of qualifying in GT5 is hardly surprising; it may be a driving simulator (an excellent one at that) but the actual game is presented in a slightly out of place arcade-style fashion.

The best part is that having qualifying makes everyone happy. People who want to qualify can opt for it. People who want to start in the middle or back of the pack can skip qualifying. Nobody loses if it's included.

Easy to do... Drive to the side of the track and just wait until everyone passes you on the grid. :D

I tend to do that when I'm not even trying much of the time. :yuck:

I do this on purpose to get the feeling of a reverse grid race. After all the point of racing is... racing.

If i wanted to drive i'd go to practice mode :s

Lack of qualifying is pretty much a GT feature now - I suppose it's the fine line GT walks between a sim with a steep learning curve, and a game which people play for quick thrills with challenge and excitement.

I was happily surprised that the online has a few qualifying/grid ordering options - I thought they may simply be random!

In the offline races though, I usually look at the expected rivals list, get a car which meets the requirements and tune it to about 15-20% less of the power of the expected rivals and race that way. Seems to be competitive racing at that point rather than getting dropped or just passing everyone on turn 1.

Rotor.

The free run online can be used as qualification, you'd have to communicate how much time people have but you can use the laptimes from free run to sort the grid either ascending or descending when the race starts. So in short there essentially is quali online, which rules.

Yes I wish the offline races would be harder and you could qualify. Its just not realistic enough to always start midpack and work your way up to a win in just a few laps. But they have to do it that way. If the AI would be more competitive you would (just like in real life) maybe make up a spot or two in a whole race with equal cars.

Yes, qualifying would be a nice feature!!

There are many PC sims that got this right. You can have a qualifying session, or choose your start position, or choose a random start position! simple, perfect, all bases covered!!!
:)

It is a real shame i is missing. I hope it is available online, I haven't checked. There needs to be a way to select a grid order at least so that we can do our own qualifying.
