Are you sure the gears are though? I heard stories of the gears cracking and that doesntnsound very much like metal.

That sound is the result of the helical gears putting pressure up and down the motors shaft. When the motor is turn off and on rapidly you hear the shaft hitting the plastic stopper.

So the gear cracking noise is not damaging to the gears at all?

What you hear is the top of the motor shaft hitting those plastic stoppers to keep from wearing out the motor bearings.

Mine makes more noise and drives different if I don't have it plugged into ps3 and into the power supply before turning on the ps3 and then starting the game. Not sure what you are using it with (pc, ps3...) and I am not sure if it has this finicky issue if being used with a PC.

Another thing is it made more noise and was way more jerky feeling in the FFB before I built my sim chassis and had a real stable place for mounting it. When I had it mounted on a crappy table that moved a lot the force feedback would wander or search side to side more because of the looseness in the mounting transmitted into wheel movement and into force feed back.

I'm thinking about taking mine apart to check things out, clean some dust I am sure is in there and put some SYNTHETIC lube on the gear system.

NEVER USE petroleum based lube or grease on anything that makes any contact with plastic or rubber. BAD NEWS will result eventually as the petroleum will degrade the plastic and rubber really fast and the integrity of those materials will turn to crap.
