Question about resolution and frame rate

On the PS3, do games get improved frame rate by running in lower resolutions instead of 1080p? I have a Prima LC 27U16. It only goes up to 1080i. So that means its native resolution is 1080i. Today I bought MW3, and the game ran it in 720p by default. Strange. Usually the PS3 always automatically go to 1080i if the game supports it, and never 720p. I've always played games in 1080i. If 720p will give me better frame rate, then I'll use it instead.

So, does 1080i or 720p give better frame rate? Also, I heard running it in your TV's native resolution is best. So would running it in 720p be bad? If so, how?

Thanks:)

Side note: Are games on console capped? I notice GT5 or MW3 never goes above its advertised 60fps. BF3 on PS3 never goes above its advertised 30fps. All games can drop lower but never higher.

On the back of the box it goes up to 1080p. It also supports 1080i. Blacks Ops was played in 1080i when I inserted the disc. I don't see how MW3 is any different.
Pics or it didn't happen. MW3 and BF3 are both in 720p.

Also, your PS3 may be outputting 1080i on the XMB, but it doesn't mean it's doing that in-game. My TV is 720p, but my PS3 says it's in 1080p. You know why? My TV downconverts it to 720p. Sort-of irrelevant, but I'm trying to convey that what's your PS3's outputting and what the screen's outputting are both different.

Actually I don't think either one are actually 720p. I'm pretty sure BF3 is high resolution than any COD game on console and it's only 702p.

Yeah, I know that. I just didn't want to make things more complicated. I'm not lying, I've heard that MW3 is actually in 640-ish and BF3 is actually in 720-ish.

MW3 and BF3 are both not rendered in 720p for consoles, they are only upscaled to fit the screen. I believe MW3-1024x600 and BF3-1280x700, but I could be wrong.

^ What drizzle said.

However, I am not sure on the exact resolutions either ( but I am almost 99% sure on consoles bf3 is locked at 720, cod has always been much lower).

For the OP:

Higher resolution requires more processing power. This in turn leads to lower frame rates. So, the higher the resolution the lower the achievable frame rates for the respective hardware.

I swear to a god if you type "when you say.... Do you mean?".....

If you're planning on being a PC gamer you need to start reading about the technology you are using.

It is not like the console kiddies who just hook up a box to a tv and they're done.

Start Googling and reading, This way you don't brick that new 6950.

As Ddrizle said, that means that the game sets your PS3 to upscale to display in those resolutions when they are played. Not that that is what they are rendered in. Some games choose to output in their native resolution (or closer to it) anyway instead as well, such as Street Fighter IV. It all depends on what the developer thinks looks better.

Ok. Thanks guys. So, what would produce higher frame rates, 1080i or 720p?

I didn't know the real resolution was much lower than 1080p, even though on the back of the game's case it showed supported resolution up to 1080p. What does it mean when the PS3 upscales it to 1080p from the game's real resolution? It's still 1080p right?

The upscale is enlarging a 1280x720 image to 1920x1080. HDTV's from 2007 all upscale well enough but early on some TV's only accepted 1920x1080 or had poor upscaling.

You're not gaming in 1080p or rendering at 1080p, merely playing a 720p image streched out to fit a larger resolution. Play a game with your PC graphic card and it will render the game at 1920x1080 and should be significantly sharper.

The box just states supported resolutions. MW3 is actually below 1280x720, the devs upscale it to 1280x720 and then either your console or HDTV will upscale it to 1920x1080. Some HDTV's are 1366x768 and stick on the box 1080p but all the TV does in downscale and merely support 1080p content and shrink it down.

Only a few console games are 1920x1080p such as Vitrua tennis 3, stardust hd and some other simple games. Most xbox360/ps3 games are 1280x720 30fps. COD games lower the res to help gain 60fps as the console can just about do 720p 30fps and not much more.

Awesome reply!!!!

"The box just states supported resolutions," you are saying the supported resolutions that the game can be upscaled to. Am I correct?

Also...how do you tell if a TV is true 1080p and not just supports 1080p content but will downscale it? I want to buy a true 1080p TV in the future.

Which do you think will give me better frame rate, 1080i or 720p?

Thanks

One more thing. Since it's just being stretched (upscaled), does it really matter to play it in 1080p? I assume it would be the same as 720p since the real content is much lower res.
