Question for mechanic types - auto transmissions with 'manual mode'

Here's a question I've been searching for an answer to. My car has an automatic transmission with a manual mode. If you flick the gear lever to the right you can manually select your gear. I believe this is pretty common in a lot of cars these days. Problem with my car at least is that you have to push the lever away from you to select a higher gear and towards you to select a lower gear. So starting from a standstill you would push the shifter up (towards the dashboard) 4 times to get it into 5th gear and then pull it back (towards the armrest) 4 times to get it back into 1st. I would rather it were the opposite way i.e. you pull to shift up the gears and push to shift down.

Do you reckon it's possible to rewire the gear selector so that I reverse the directions for shifting gears?

I know this post is really clumsily worded and that reflects my complete lack of technical competence.

If it's electronically controlled then it's likely you could... Cable or linkage control would make it more difficult.

My autobox has it the right way round so... :D

I know! My last car was a Mazda. The Nissan shifter feels so counter-instinctive.

Just sit in the seat backwards.

Saab owners...

I bet you'll find that if the gear selector is all electronic it might be one big controller that you wouldn't be able to easily change. But otherwise if you're good at soldering there may be a way to get the job done. I would price a replacement part before you possibly brick it though.
