Question regarding exhaust pipes.

This is just a trivial question, I'm not reporting a problem nor some sort of feature that I wish to have. It is purely for my knowledge. :)

When I install a racing exhaust in a GT-R model, it changes location.
The standard exhaust pipes are on each side of the rear bumper, but when I install a racing exhaust, it chances to a location between the previous standard exhaust.

So, what I'm asking is:
Why can't the racing exhaust be installed in the same place as the standard ones?
Are there any reasons for this to happen?

It's all to do with gas flow. On a real car, the less bends and changes of direction in the system, the better. The manifold will be designed (tuned), so that gases flowing out of a cylinder, don't interfere with another cylinder's gases.
The rest of the system, needs to be designed to prevent excessive back pressure which reduces power. Too many bends, more pressure build up.

You compare this one of a GT-R. The one on right is stock, the one on the left is aftermarket. The stock has smaller diameter pipes, the aftermarket has larger pipes and probably less severe bends.

Less bends, more power, but more noise (due to silencers being removed), hence why race exhausts are illegal for road use. The ideal scenario, looking at that picture would be for the exhaust to come straight out of the middle.

On the vw bug 1600 it really changes. It wraps around the back of the car.

I just wish when you upgraded to the titanium exhaust that it didn't give you the ricey flame kissed tips. I want the performance upgrade but I wish you could choose the tips.
