Question with Steering Wheel difficulty?

First, I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, if so can someone please point me in the right direction?

I play gt5 with a playseat/G27 steering wheel combo. Anyhow, I'm wondering what the difference is with the steering wheel difficulty settings between "amateur, intermediate, and simulation".

I'm not very good and still trying to get a handle on using no driver aids. I don't have alot of time to play but can anyone tell me what the difference is?

And also does anyone know what's the best way to practice to drive better/faster. What do you do to challenge yourself to improve?

For example, I don't have much trouble with driving a Corvette ZR1, but I have a hard time controlling a Nissan GT-R. I know both have different wheel drives, ZR1 is FR, and GT-R is FW if I'm not mistaken.

That's one of the great debates of GT5. I'm not sure if there is a concensus on exactly what it does or whether it has any effect on the wheels that it isn't supposed to affect. It's probably just a purer feedback with the user having slightly fuller control. I set it to simulation because it says "simulation." :p

It takes time and practice to adjust your driving style to different cars and drivetrains. It's one of the most fun things about the GT series in my opinion. I seem to have trouble with the stock [AWD] GT-R myself but I also seem to be the only one. It's famous for being one of the easiest cars to drive fast in the game. I need to practice it but I don't want to.

I'd suggest practicing with slower cars on sports or comfort tires to get used to different styles. Try to stay smooth and when you feel comfortable pushing in those cars you can shift your focus to keeping the fast cars on the track & pointed forward and let them provide the speed for you.
 
I am doing the same at the moment, learning to use a wheel as got a G25 for crimbo.

I set my wheel to sim too, not sure if it does do anything though. Its the rest of the settings that have me still trying to find a nice feel.
Choosing a good FFB level, deciding if to use power assist or not and what to set steering sensitivity too.
But am having fun learning, so much more fun did'nt think it would be such a huge difference.
 
I have the same g27/playseat. Congrats its awesome.

I drove amateur at first with the wheel. It makes it easier to save your spins. Basically it makes you put in less steering input when your in the extremes. The further away from center you go, the more it actually turns. And all around smoothes steering in general. Full sim or real is where you want to be to really drive. It takes full input and its sent directly to the car. Making trying to save a spin or slide very tough. You need to give it exact input. It can get crazy when your outta wack and your flingin the wheel all around. For me its still tough but i try to stay out of those situations.

For a beginner, keep it on amateur if you want and just get a feel for braking on point and general driving. When your comfortable start switching to real.

To be fast takes (play)seat time. Just enjoy the drive.

I think steering sensitivity in options refers only to controller users?

Morgoth, I've been debating on restarting the game since most of I completed it with a DS3 before I got the G27. What about doing the License tests as I still can't seem to beat my original DS3 times by very much.

NjLowrider, Thanks! Do you use the clutch at all? I find it hard to use the clutch cuz I can't get around the bar that the playseat has in the middle by the pedal mount for the steering wheel column.

I know tuning is also a big debate. Do any of you notice considerable lap time improvements? and how does the aerodynamics affect your lap times without tuning?
 
Personally I'd just do tests and events over rather than sacrificing my cars and setups, but that doesn't satisfy everyone.

Tuning setup can make a huge difference for good or ill, but I'm not very good at it. Some things also don't seem to work as they do in the real world.

Basically any aero part on the car should increase grip at that area of the car. It's pretty substantial at higher speeds and has little effect at speeds below 60 or 70 mph due to less airflow. It also usually increases drag, slowing acceleration, although this seems less pronounced than in real life - but there's probably no sense in putting a giant rear wing on a 115 horsepower front wheel drive car.

I'm not sure how effective some of the parts are on some cars since they don't all change the numbers in the setup menu. You just have to see how it acts on the track, I think I usually feel something, but then I want to.

I believe if you are using a T500, G25, G27 or DFGT then those options don't do anything. If you are using a Driving Force then these options will affect how your car handles a little but since I have a DFGT and not the original Driving Force, I can't tell you how each option makes the car's handling differ.
 
I noticed the difference between amateur and simulation that you hardly feel the bumps and kerbs with the amatuer setting, I have always used Simulation, PAS off and FF 10, has always been the best setting for me and never looked back
