Hi everyone. As some of you may know, I recently moved to Japan and I had my ps3 shipped over to me.

The ps3 is connected to my tv using an hdmi cable. It works fine for games and blu rays, however, when I try to use dvd's, a problem occurs. The ps3 works perfectly when I use Japanese dvd's, however, when I try to watch uk pal dvd's, the DVD loads until it leaves the ps3's operating system. The little play symbol appears in the corner and then it goes to a blank screen. When it goes to the blank screen, it's almost as if the system has crashed. The controller stops responding and the only way to return to the main menu is to turn the machine off and on again.

I'm guessing this is just some problem with my new tv as my ps3 has never had a problem with my uk pal DVDs before. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

The console shouldn't be able to play Japanese and UK DVD's because even though they are both region 2 one is NTSC and the other is PAL making them incompatible. Where did you buy the PS3?

All modern TV's are multi system so that shouldn't be the reason.

The ps3 was bought in 2008 in the uk. It has functioned perfectly up until now.

I should add that it has displayed hundreds of uk DVDs in the past with no error. Now it doesn't seem to like the uk DVDs, but has no problem with Japanese DVDs, which is bizarre.

That's really odd because when putting a Japanese DVD in a UK PS3 a message saying "Video in the PAL broadcast standard is not supported" should pop up.

I would also check in the TV's manual or box just to see that it does indeed support PAL just to be on the safe side but buy 2012 it really should do.

Did you update the PS3 to 4.20 recently ? I am guessing that your PS3 might have been updated with Japan update file, thus you are able to play Japanese NTSC DVD but not UK's PAL DVD.

Just bought the tv new about a month ago. I would assume it would support pal, however I could't read the manual as it's all in Japanese. I could ask the wife if I can find the manual.

You know what, that might be it. I did download that update.

The update point is a very good one because you are supposed to update your console with the firmware from its specific region, however its never been clear as to where the firmware comes from if you do it directly through your PS3.

It might be that you have installed Japanese firmware on your UK PS3 which is possible if the console was being detected as being located in the country.

You can check the DVD region in your XMB.. It will give you a definitive answer.

How do I do that? I had a quick look in the settings menu but didn't see it.

Gave that a try and it still doesn't work. This really is an absolute mystery. Only have one Blu Ray with me (my copy of Senna) and that works, but for some reason, my ps3 only wants to play Japanese dvds. Good news for the wife, bad news for me. Ah well. Guess I'll have to buy a region free dvd player as I'm truly stumped on this one.

Wait for the next PS3 update and do it manually from the EU website, maybe that will put it right.

Were you signed in on PSN when playing the DVD ? I don't know if it has any effect but if you were online, try to play while offline using your UK account, as I presumed you must have Japanese account as well. And check the audio and video settings are correct, it may have been a bug or something with the new 4.20 firmware ...

Edit : Almost forgot, try to disable the HDMI control features both on PS3 and TV, when you have it on, it allows PS3 or TV to control other HDMI connected devices. The TV might have defaulted on NTSC signal request, try this : set the display setting on PS3 to SD , see if it displays in PAL or NTSC, it should have PAL 576p if you have the EU 4.20 firmware and TV is able to display the format.

If all are fine, the PS3 output PAL 576p signal, set the video settings for DVD playback to full ( resize to HD res ) and set the PS3 display to 1080p. It should work ... if not, I think it's a rare bug.

Forgot about this. Sorry. Thanks for all the advice guys. Still haven't been able to get it working. All my tv menus are in Japanese, which I can't read, so I'll have to wait until my brother in law comes to my house and ask him to play around with the tv settings.
