R/C Jets!

I remember reading magazines when I was 13 looking at these jets. I always wanted one. . . That was a pretty rough landing for that F-15 though :D
 
I went to an R/C air show some 15 years ago. It was AMAZING. There were probably 300 planes there. And they had a few jets, maybe ten or so. Pretty cool stuff.

Those jets are amazing, but hell of expensive.I think some are in the high thousands. I guess they are worth it though ifyou are that much into it.

Has anyone ever seen one crash?

Didn't you see the f 15 when it tryed to land.
 
Im very into rc planes. I was talking to my rc plane instructor about those and he says those thing can cost up to 25 grand. They also look, sound, and fly like real jets. they even crash like real jets!



They do have real scaled down turbine engines. The max rpm is about 160,000 rpms! Each engine is 4-6 thousand dollars a peice. and they run on real jet fuel.

I have. Nasty sight.

I used to visit a nursing home every Saturday and there was this little airstrip right next to it. Every Saturday after I was done visiting, me and my dad would go out and watch these guys fly these jets. Pretty neat thing to watch. I couldn't help but laugh when I saw one crash, though.

There were never more than 20 or so in the air at the same time. I think they were worried about radio frequency bleed or something.

Umm what is radio frequency bleed :confused:
 
Well, each radio controled device has to have its own frequency. Much like FM radio stations. There aren't an infinite available so there is a finite amount of devices that can operate within a certain range of eachother. When you start using frequencies too close together they bleed into eachother. Try tuning your radio to two station within a couple 1/5 of eachother and there's a good chance you'll hear both at the same time. When you're talking about robotics (or R/C planes ...) it's important that one device doesn't pick up the commands issued for another device. Tends to cause problems when the device is 400 feet in the air ...
 
I am considering buying an R/C Plane (or heli - aint decided yet). I found where the local R/C Aviation club meets and went to their airstrip last sunday. After watching some guy try synchronise his Lightnings engines, another more mature member taxi'd his jet powered F-14 to the runway.

Awesome is a pretty relevant adjective. Sounded amazing, had amazing climb rate, and bags of speed. When he landed it (in cross winds i might add), he stopped it on a dime. The reason, I saw later, was the pop-up airbrake located behind the cockpit. Not too shabby at all.
 
Those things will fry the grass for 20-30 feet behind them too. You're right, Boom, they are really cool.

I used to build and fly R/C prop planes, but never got into the jets. They are jaw-dropping to watch fly, though. I hate to see crashes but everybody in the hobby (with any sense, anyway) realizes that model airplanes are born to die, and to quote vat_man, "it's not if, it's when". I saw one of those things come across the flight line wide open, and some kind of flutter occurred in the structure and within a second it had torn itself to pieces. A sad sight to watch.

"Mike", if you are just starting out with R/C aircraft I would recommend staying away from helicopters. They are much improved over older models, but are still quite a handful to fly. I suggest a Sig Cadett as a good model to learn on, with an 0.50 or 0.60 four-stroke engine and the optional ailerons.
 
I once made a remote control plane, using several 12V mini batteries and a hair dryer. It flew great, until the dryer burnt out in midair and it crashed into a tree.

Cue running to it and a painful "spray own creation with fire extinguisher" moment.

I know a guy who's building one. It's got a gyro in the tailplane that can add trim to automatically balance it. It's very clever, but it's been in development for about 5 years now.

I would love to do it, but no time.
 
It took me an a friend 4 months, with a RC system from a Subaru Impreza RC car, an old hair dryer, 10 12 Volt miniture batteries and some stuff from the D+T department at school.

Was damn quick, too.:D
 
Whoever flew the trainor was better. But neither can land very well.
 
when i got my RC plane i took it to a field where alot of people flew theirs and one guy had an RC jet. it looked like a F-14 it was soo cool and it was realy fast too. it was just so incredible! :eek:

Yeah, OK, sure, whatever. This is quite possibly the stupidest lie I've ever heard.
 
I was watching this programme and they made a C-17 Globe master jet model. It sounded amazing, especially on the fly-by.

What you have to realise also is taht not only do you have to remember teh cost of making them, but you must be extremely experienced to get even near one. They are leathel in the wrong hands.

I personally woudl love a f-14 timcat with proper variable wing geometry. My dream in life is to buld a nimitz carreir to scale taht can actually carry a small amount of operational r/c jets. Only problem, finding somewhere big enough and water calm enough.
 
Boo... it doesn't work for me. I downloaded it only for Windows Media Player to whine that the file is corrupted. I'll get it from a friend sometime or try downloading it again later I guess.
