Robert F. "Bob" Snodgrass Jr., President and CEO of Brumos Racing, Brumos Motor Cars Inc., Brumos Porsche and Lexus of Jacksonville and Vice Chairman of Grand-Am passed away on Tuesday evening at his home in Jacksonville, Fla. of an apparent heart attack. Snodgrass was born on September 25, 1942.
From the age of six when he attended his first race at Watkins Glen, Snodgrass, a native of Elmira, N.Y., was a staunch supporter of road racing and headed Brumos Racing, one of the most storied teams in the sport's history with victories in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring among many triumphs. Snodgrass began managing the team in 1991, and Brumos Racing currently fields a pair of Daytona Prototypes in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, the famous No. 59 Brumos Porsche/Kendall Porsche Riley for co-drivers JC France and road racing legend Hurley Haywood, and the No. 58 Red Bull/Brumos Racing Porsche Riley for Darren Law and David Donohue.
As Vice Chairman of Grand-Am, Snodgrass was also instrumental in the development and implementation of the Daytona Prototype category, which has produced some of the world's most competitive and exciting road racing since its inception in 2003. Snodgrass was also honored by Daytona International Speedway in January with his induction into the speedway's Legends Walk of Fame. He was also an Executive Board member of the International Motor Racing Research Center at Watkins Glen and a board member of the Automobile Competition Committee United States (ACCUS).
Snodgrass was an accomplished race car driver in his own right, but his driving career took a back seat when he joined Brumos in 1973 as manager of the Porsche dealership. Nevertheless, he won the John Gordon Bennett Award as America's outstanding historic car racing driver in 1996, and won HSR Rolex Endurance championships every year from 1995 through 1997 and again from 1999 through 2001.
Since 1981, Snodgrass was President and CEO of one of the nation's most successful automotive groups, consisting of the Brumos Motor Cars Mercedes-Benz dealership, Lexus of Jacksonville and Brumos Porsche. The Brumos group was nominated as one of Jacksonville's "Best Places to Work" in 2006 and 2007 among many other achievements within the automotive retailing industry, and Snodgrass was also honored as the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office "Citizen of the Year" in 2007.
Snodgrass was also a supporter of many charities through Brumos, including RITA (Research is the Answer) to prevent and cure Breast Cancer, Greyhounds As Pets, Police Athletic League, Boy Scouts of America, Jacksonville Zoo and the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office "Officer of the Month" program.
Snodgrass is survived by his wife, Susan, and sons Harris M. Snodgrass and Robert F. Snodgrass, III
