I'm curious on how you guys calculate race length in laps. First off, I'll explain my method, and then you can say if it works or not. Then, you can explain your methods.

So, what do I do? I first run on the track for a set amount of laps (10 laps, for example), and save the replay. I then watch the replay and record the lap times. I then figure out the average lap time by adding the times together and dividing the sum by the number of laps. Since I want to find out the approximate number of laps for a certain time amount (45 minutes, for example), I convert the time into minutes. I finally get my number of laps by dividing the time (45 minutes) by the average time.

So that is how I do it. Does it work out or not? What do you do for the same thing?

The purpose? I just want to know what the best method for race length is.
For what purpose do you need the race length? Is this for online/arcade?
The only time I've seen anyone mention race length are the S level races and they know them because they ran those races.

I run a few laps, get a good lap time, then times that by a few numbers until I get the race time I need. So in my Miata series, we run 20 minute races. I just take the fast lap and times it by 10, 11, 12, etc until I get a race time close to 20 minutes. I use this to calculate the times:

1:48.xxx laps x 11 = close to 20min.

Oh, ok. If it were me, I'd do it how Formula 1 does it, just base it on distance. Every race would have slightly different times, but they usually wouldn't be hugely far off unless you run at tracks with abnormally low or high average speeds (like Cote d'Azure for example). If you do a race on Cote d'Azure or something, then you'd have to tweak it a bit. And distance would be a consistent factor, instead of having to base it off lap times.

that's the way to go in my opinion.

Yep distance makes more sense rather than lap times.

45 minutes is a bit longer than I would want to run an online race. I generally try to keep them in the 10-20 minute range
