Racism in certain lobbies

I believe at the time I was with one of my friends here at GTP, and we were having a convo in the lobby. This was in GT5, though.

And how could they figure you were african american? And how you know the kick was for that reason?
Just curious

Because we were talking about things that had to do with that subject. I don't remember it all clearly, but I know it was because of my race.

How messed up... It's really sad that we still have to deal with such ignorance nowadays !
Not unexpected given the number of people online, but in my estimation, its much lower in the GT series than you find in many other places.

A buddy of mine owns a X-Box and man all compareable games to mine (CoD, Forza/GT, Fifa) are online a mess compared to PS3.
At least from my perspective.
Sure I do play PS3 more often, but everytime me is at his place and we play those games online, he gets insults due to being German all the time.
Top3: 1.UK 2. French 3.Spain

Soo bottomline is I don´t whitnessed racism that hard on any PS3 game so far (CoD is another story due to the fact all kiddies tend to get this Rated-R game coincidentially :D and they tend to insult very fast).

But for me the worst are the French. They only talk/chat in french and are very fast in terms of handing out insults, mainly in french too.
But it was this way in GT5 => I only join German/Austrian and UK rooms. Sometimes US but me doesn´t want to make them rooms crash although me has good and stable interwebs.
With this Guideline I just had fun races with almost no insults.

This thread is growing fast, but nobody (except for 2 or 3) has made any reference to RACISM!

Race is not defined by your borders, your language, or your flag. American is not a race. Japanese is not a race. French is not a race. Australian is not a race. Mexican is not a race.

Furthermore, biologically speaking, black is not a race. White is not a race. Mongoloid is not a race. Latino or Hispanic is not a race. Those are immutable characteristics, certainly, but they all belong to the human race.

There are no immutable characteristics associated with nationality--it's simply a choice you (or your parents) made, and it can easily be changed.

What I'm reading about here is either discrimination against cultures, or slow ping times--not racism.

I once entered in a lobby full of British people and US people, and after 15 mins of race, they found out that i'm a Filipino and they kicked me out because one user said "We don't like jeepney drivers." so they kicked me out.

About the "We don't like jeepney drivers" thing, well we Filipinos use old jeepneys as a mode of transport and it has been mocked ever since. So it does show disrespect on our transportation.
A Filipino won my WTCC championship!

As far as these definitions go, I'm pretty sure discrimination against culture (presumed or not), location, nationality, language, and skin tone can be constituted as "racism"… I'm not exactly sure what your definition would be...

That said, your argument basically explains exactly why racism shouldn't exist; we're all really one "race".

In my experience, I get most flak by Japanese users. Once in GT5, they made it clear it wasn't my ping, but my nationality XD They kept saying my English sucked and all, so I wasn't taking them seriously at all. Then came the ramming.

I often join Speed Demon races, usually hosted by Japanese players. They bump me but I get them back ;) The most serious occasion, though, was by two British players. Took me by surprise :( Most of the players I race with tend to be Britsh so I expected peace. I don't have a national preference or anything, I tend to play when other Americans are at work or school.

So basically you're saying racism doesn't exist? :odd:

Oh, and an other question. Why is this thread in the racing series section? Can a moderator please remove it?

Let's face it, other people behind the keyboard/monitor/controller when given a chance will spurt ridiculous things to other people at the end of the line regardless of race, skill, age etc. People are stupid and they will do stupid things specially if can get away with it.

Honestly the people on receiving end should just ignore it. All those people want is a reaction from you. After all this is the internet. Now if someone in real life came up to me and talked to me like that, then it would be a different story.

First, I would not base any argument on a wiki entry.

Second, assuming you're willing to allow sociologists to violate biological taxonomy to artificially create sub-races within the human race, then I would define "racism" as discrimination based on the immutable differences upon which those sub-races are based.

Location, nationality, and language have nothing at all to do with race because they are readily changeable. They are choices, and those choices are not protected by any anti-discrimination laws that I'm aware of. Skin color, on the other hand, is not changeable (unless you're Michael Jackson) and is therefore protected by anti-discrimination laws.

Read a few US Supreme Court cases concerning discriminatory practices and the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to the US Constitution--they lay it out very clearly. Most countries are similar in this regard.

So basically you're saying racism doesn't exist? :odd:
I'm not denying that discrimination exists based on skin color and other unchangeable characteristics--and that is commonly referred to as racism. But I'll let the biologists and sociologists duke it out as to whether dark skinned people of African ancestry are a different race from light skinned people of western European ancestry. Biologists will tell you we're all one race, and the people who put labels on discrimination have been a little sloppy and lazy.

But don't misunderstand me--that type of discrimination exists and is horrible.

So racism is only limited to skin tone…? All you have stated is (technically) a legal definition, which basically only determines what offenses can receive punishments. It doesn't actually "define" racism.

"Racism consists of both prejudice and discrimination based in social perceptions of biological differences between peoples" - I think this accurately defines it - it is the perceived differences between peoples. If you took a Brit and a Frenchman and put them side-by-side without labeling the two as such, they'd be perceived as exactly the same until labels are re-applied (and with them, their prejudices). There is no literal difference, it's all personal/cultural prejudice; racism is not literally about race, it is about differences that are perceived or sometimes created for a given population, often times it stems from nationalism.

(I feel this topic is beginning to slant very far away from Gran Turismo…)

And its very rare that a person will come up to you face to face like that. Unless they're drunk, on drugs or really stupid.

I see several rooms with no English or USA or Japan. Or Holland or France only. I personally think the Dutch have the most lobbies like this.

I did not say it's limited to skin color--that's just the most obvious example. I agree that it's based on certain clusters of biological traits, and the discriminator's perception that those biological traits are accompanied by flaws in intellect, character, or something else. However, "racism" cannot exist without the cluster of biological traits we lazily refer to as "race."

If two 6'2" blond guys with blue eyes and freckles were before you, but one spoke like he's a Valley dude from north of LA, and the other spoke French and lived in Burgundy, you cannot be accused of racism for discriminating against the moron from Encino--even if your perception of his intellect is incorrect. Why? They're the same "race."

I'm done. Sometimes it seems people try not to understand.

Edit: Racism is one form of discrimination, but not all discrimination is racism. Gender, age, religion, nationality, sexual preference, whatever are all forms of discrimination. But we don't say someone is "racist against age," or against women, etc., because it's not based on "race."

I run multi national lobbies every day with racers from US , UK, Spain, Japan, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland etc.
When someone's laggin', I ask him politely to leave. But sometimes I have to react quickly, e.g. when the guy is laggin' so bad, that his car is flying all over the track. I immediately kick in that cases and send an explaining PN to the person.
This works for me and everybody participating like a charm.
But: in certain situations, where dirty drivers from foreign countries show up and get kicked (my lobby title always contains *fairplay*) I had often private notes like "f* german Nazi" and similar stupid notes in my inbox.
That was annoying since I found out how to not recieve private notes from strangers in PS3s settings and now everything's hunky dory. :)
One last note on the "Aussie" situations: I barely have Aussies in my lobby, 'cause the lag is ridiculous. And that's indeed no racism from my side, their ping is just too high.

I think that this topic is beginning to have sort of racist orientation OP suggested happens in certain online lobbies.

I mean I bet there's a french/spanish/aussie/from-where-ever-basically-bloke behind hes screen steaming whit fury and embarrassment hes fellow country men are causing him...

I do recognize the problem the OP is referring to, I still don't have a problem if someones are having a sort of private party going on, but first of all it would be great if it would actually read on the room name  And the fact that I have been thrown a way from the room so many times for no apparent reason has really led me to think that I should paint my car grey and hang in the middle of the punch driving really carefully not to touch or overtake anybody and I could last in a room for more than couple of races, I mean sometimes just by winning you get a punch of people trying to drive you off the track, and I really do think that has nothing to do whit my nationality, but it's just a really great example why I usually have to drink couple of beers before entering online rooms, one does need great patience sometimes to find a decent room without some idiot causing some sort of havoc all the time...

But yeah, there's a lot of great people online and I think I have had good races whit punch of different nationalities, and when it comes to idiots... They are all the same, no matter what skin color or nationality!!!

I was in a free run lobby the other day and the host kept saying any different flags besides USA will be kicked leave now.....it was kind of disgusting so I left and eventually the host did too and the room was still open so I went back in and all kinds of nationalities were in there having a good time without him. People were upset with him I guess he gave in and left.

I meant "So racism is only limited to skin tone…?" as more of a rhetorical question relating to your position you put on text from the US constitution.

What I was trying to ask you was what your actual definition of racism was. You only really told what it wasn't.

I know racism is a form of discrimination, but what traits does it encompass? You never really explained that to me. You said earlier that the traits people are discussing here are that of "sub-races", so is the discrimination that's being discussed here actually "sub-racism", or does it have another name?

I was under the impression that racism was a very non-literal term, specifically, it didn't deal with the literal concept of race, but with difference in physical/cultural traits, similar to the concept of race. So, using your example with the two physically identical blonde men - one can receive the generalization and negative racist remarks of the California stoner surfer dude, the Frenchman could receive the generalization of smelly, unshaven, mime oui oui bread dude, and any other cultural stereotype simply because of the location they are from. They can also recieve the "dumb blonde" stereotype, which would also fall under the definition I am accustomed to. Again, it's about the differences (on a near-parallel plane to differnces you'd find between actual races) perceived in people, no matter if the differences actually exist or not.

Summary: What is the definition of racism you are accustomed to, how would you define the discrimination that is being discussed in this thread?

I'm not a racist. I only kick those that don't understand furry fandom terminology... which is about 90% of GT players. As long as you know what the furry fandom is, you're cool with me, but the instant you insult it, kick. Sadly it seems to be Europeans who insult me because I'm a furry, but that is a rant I'll save for the appropriate thread.
