why do the top wrc cars use struts all around? are they stronger or something? cause the best suspension is said to be the double wishbone or a arm design.

i thought it would be different for rally cars, struts must just be better support over the bumps and stuff, they used to use double macphearson struts or something like that, dunno if they still do, their shock absorbers are amazing though.

I don't think that they're allowed to change the fundamental design of the suspension, so if the donor car uses McPherson struts, so does the rally car.

Also, rally car suspension systems are designed for ease of serviceability. They can replace an entire corner in about 6 minutes.

I had a brief look on the FIA web site to see if I could find the rules relating to suspension, but couldn't.

i think subaru accualy uses coil-over style... most of the Rally-America guys do too... they are easy to swap out.. but DAMNed expencive.. at rally NY one of the guys wrecked into a tree stump.. he did nearly 3k in damage to the suspension alone...

The FIA site is a bit of a maze, but with work I have had to find my way around it before, here are the Group A WRC homologation regs.

FIA WRC Regs

Suspension details start on page 8 and in keeping with most FIA documents, the English is on the left (with French on the right).

And as has been said, apart from mainly safety related modifications, the suspension units must remain very close to those fitted to the road car.

You might be interested in this link, its the full list of all FIA regs, for all championships.

That's nothing compared to what the WRC teams spend. I watched a short segment between stages on one of the recent rallies about how much a team spends per rally. It added up to somewhere above $100,000 USD. :yuck:

er..that's quite a conservative figure. Subaru's airfreight bill alone for Argentina was around $85,000 Australian. Check out the feature on logistics at swrt.com

I think what you saw was the bill from Roman Kresta's car at Cyprus. For one car on one day, the bill was 42,000 euros.

My numbers might not be correct but my point was that $3000 USD is nothing in the world of racing. :)
