Rally Car Tuning Help

Hello GTP :) if this thread already exists please point me to it lol, I've searched and there just isn't much info on Rally tuning. I can find tunes but they seem to be wildly inconsistent.

I just want to learn some basic tips. Suspension tips for gravel is what I'm really after. What should the ride height and spring rate be?(I'm being very broad) High and soft? I've tried a few different setups unsuccessfully but I know it can be better than stock. I wouldn't mind tips on snow setups as well. Is it a totally different setup compared to gravel or just driving technique?

If people reply enough to this post with good tips I would like to rewrite this OP into a Beginners Guide to Rally Tuning. :D

The cars I'm trying to get info for are Modern 4wd Rally Cars (90's to present)

I drive the Evo Super Rally Car(not asking for a specific tune though). Bone stock I can turn a 3:50 around K Trail(valid) but I've read someone did a 3:30.. I'm sure he was 🤬 badass but he had to have a wicked setup, right?

Thanks in advance for the help! Sorry for talking too much :P

P.S. If it matters I drive with a DFGT

I'm down to a low 30's lap around K trail in my RM Subaru, and personally I find a high/soft combo to be the best, though in all honesty, its the driver far more than the tune in rally. Really I think that the gearing is the most important part, and the suspension itself much less as long as it it soft enough to run smooth(ish). Just play with it and see what feels best.

looks like I gotta keep practicing lol. I'll make the adjustments and see whats up. I think I'm going to experiment with the LSD as well, though tuning 2 is a bit intimidating, there's always default lol

I mostly just leave everything stock for my rally cars. Did a 1:54.XXX at Toscona (Toscana? The Italian one with gravel.) in a bone stock Ford RS200 rally car. I usually find that stock is best, maybe add a little more downforce.

Just read the Dirt and Snow sections of that guide and for me it's the opposite. Snow is much easier to drive on for me and Dirt is PITA.

I pretty much wrote the same thing for both them just added that snow tracks can be much larger so the speeds there get much faster. Also to watch out how fast your going because stopping isn't gonna happen when your flying. Dirt tracks have more corner so you never really get to huge speeds.

4wd Dirt/Snow Rally Cars
Upgrades: dirt/snow tires, LSD, full suspension, full transmission
Electronic sensing center diff 40 front and 60 rear
Initial Torque 10 front and 10 rear
Acceleration 15 front and 20 rear
Braking 5 front and 10 rear
Ride Height: front 0, rear 0 on rally car or raise +20 on street car
Springs: front 8.0, rear 8.0
Damper extend: front 6, rear 6
Damper compress: front 3, rear 3
Anti-roll Bars: front 5, rear 3
Camber: front 2.5, rear 2.0
Toe: front -0.10, rear +0.00
Brake balance: 4 front, 10 rear

That's pretty much a base tune I use to tune my Rally Cars. It's a base tune I got from Motor City Tunes and it's helped out a lot. Also, I've learned a lot from shmogt, so I'll take this time to thank both of these great tuners for the help I got. I'm glad they took the time to explain things to make it easier.

I feel like one of the most useful things to do is set your torque diff to 50/50. I think that gives you the best offroad control.

But yeah, I've been dying for some rally tuning help as well. I feel so lost since it's such a rejected/passed over part of the game.

I've been meaning to share my tune for the Audi Pikes Peak Quattro concept. I think I came up with a fairly decent tune, and I didn't even use all the upgrades. I'll post it a little later.

I agree. Of the 33 rally cars in GT5, only 18 have any tune posted for them. Plus, there have only been two rally tunes posted since the 2.0 game update.

I am hosting the August FITT Tuner Challenge and we will be using rally cars and their street versions. I am also working on a tuning guide for rally. Since making a good tune is kind of a personal thing (a tune built for me) I do not want to write "the definitive guide to rally tuning." On cars that I really work on (not my 10 minute tunes), I take notes along the way with every change. I plan to publish my notes so that people can see how I approached a start to finish rally tune. I will probably do four or five different rally cars until I get interested in something else. I have never really enjoyed rally that much in GT5, but I am now starting to see that it is becasue I have never had a really, really good tune to work with. I am approaching this round of Rally tuning as if I don't know anything about tuning - no pre-conceived ideas about what should work and what shouldn't. I am trying a number of things in an effort to rethink the whole approach to rally. So far, I have made huge gains in transmission, brakes and LSD.

Back to the August FITT challenge, here are the car pairings that will be available to the tuners.

Here's my basic tune of the Audi I mentioned earlier. I'm no genius tuner, and I'm only slightly above average skill wise for driving. Please tell me what works and what doesn't. Feel free to add more parts. All I ask is for some of you to fool around with this a little.
