Rarity?

I'm pretty new to the gran turismo world, and I was always wondering;
how do you know if a car or paint is "rare"?
I'm getting the sense that matte/chrome paints are rare, and I agree to that, since I only have like 3 matte /chrome colors compared to the other 200 colors that I have.

but how do you know if a car is rare? How do you know if a certain color is rare? Is there a scale somewhere that we have to know?

That works to a point. You'll see a lot of really crappy cars with high rarity ratings on there. That's because the system on that site calculates how many people have that car compared to how many people have a garage on that site. A Nissan Primera has a 10 rarity rating...is it as rare as a stealth car (code only cars) well no but it's because people don't want them.
 
As far as chrome and matte paint go, they're "rare" because they are only awarded each time you acquire 30 cars in your garage (e.g. 30, 60, 90, etc.).... unless you trade for them.

Stick your head into the marketplace thread and get a sense of the cars requested just as you did for the paints.

Generally, the GT Academy cars are popular as with any Road version race vehicles (Like the NSX LM Prototype Road Car). Also popular are cars that can't be repainted or Cup cars.

I assume you have every car including all stealth, chromeline, dlc, and all the unpaintable cars?

I agree with the pop into the marketplace. Search for a list of unpaintable cars as well, those are always good to collect.
 
Rare car... Maybe the Panoz Esperante is rare. I have two of them from 1000 Tickets. If you want one, send me a message. I don't want anything from you.
